Yes—much of Final Fantasy XIV’s main scenario can be played without grouping with other human players. The game’s Duty Support system fills certain required dungeons with NPC companions. It is not a universal solo mode: the exact dungeon, trial or raid determines whether NPC support exists, so check the current official list before assuming a duty can be entered alone.
What “solo” means in Final Fantasy XIV
In this context, solo means progressing through story duties without queuing with other players. You still control one character, but Duty Support supplies an NPC party for supported instanced dungeons. You do not need to recruit a group in chat or wait for a player-made party for those entries.

That distinction matters because Final Fantasy XIV’s main scenario mixes several duty types. A four-player dungeon may have an NPC option, while a trial, raid or an individual story instance may require a different system—or a party of human players. The reliable test is the duty’s own entry and the official Duty Support list, not the fact that the activity appears in a story quest.

How Duty Support works
Square Enix describes Duty Support as a way to “bring certain NPCs with you into instanced dungeons required to progress without queuing with other players.” It is a duty-specific feature, so it appears only where the game has assigned an NPC party.

Opening the feature
You can open Duty Support in either of two places:
- Open the Duty menu and choose Duty Support.
- Go to the entrance of a supported duty and use the Duty Support option shown there. Supported entrances display a special icon.
After opening the menu, select the duty, review the available NPC party, register, and commence. The official manual’s instructions are collected at na.finalfantasyxiv.com/game_manual/dutysupport/.
NPC parties are not identical everywhere
Some duties let you switch among the NPCs offered for that run. A Realm Reborn instanced dungeons are the important exception documented by the manual: their NPC party members are preset and cannot be changed. If a roster appears locked, that is the rule for that duty rather than a missing setting.
How much of the main story is covered?
The current official manual lists supported main-scenario dungeons from every major story era currently represented in the game: A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker and Dawntrail. That gives a solo-focused player substantial coverage of the main quest, but it does not mean every story duty is NPC-compatible.

When a required dungeon appears on the manual’s supported-duty list, you can enter it with the listed NPCs instead of a matchmaking party. The same list also includes a small number of optional sidequest dungeons. Optional content therefore has to be checked individually; “sidequest” is not a guarantee that it supports Duty Support.

Use the list as a practical checklist for the quest you are on. If the duty is listed, the NPC route is available. If it is absent, do not assume that changing jobs, lowering the difficulty or standing at the entrance will unlock a solo version; the feature is tied to the duty itself.
Recent additions in Patch 7.5
Square Enix’s Patch 7.5 notes, updated May 11, 2026, add three more dungeons to Duty Support: The Dusk Vigil in Heavensward, Shisui of the Violet Tides in Stormblood and The Clyteum in Dawntrail. The notes also document The Clyteum as a four-player dungeon that can be entered with Trust or Duty Support NPCs. Read the complete update at the Patch 7.5 notes.
Because the supported roster changes with patches, an old guide or a remembered dungeon list can be out of date. For a current run, the in-game Duty Support menu and the live manual are safer references than a historical checklist.
Which duties still involve other players?
Duty Support does not cover every activity that advances a quest. The duty type and its specific entry determine the requirement. Current patch notes provide clear examples of content designed around human group sizes:

Trials
Patch 7.5 identifies The Unmaking as an eight-player trial. That entry is evidence that this particular duty is group-sized; it is not a blanket rule for every trial in the game. When a quest sends you to a trial, inspect the duty description and look for a Duty Support or NPC option before deciding whether you need a queue.
Raids and alliance raids
The same notes list Windurst: The Third Walk as an eight-player party or a 24-player alliance. It is an example of alliance-raid scale, not proof that all raids use exactly that arrangement. Patch 7.4 separately lists AAC Heavyweight Tier as an eight-player raid.
Duties with NPC support in the same updates
Patch 7.4 describes Mistwake as enterable with Trust or Duty Support NPCs while listing other activities—such as Hell on Rails, an eight-player trial—as group duties. The contrast is useful: NPC access is assigned per duty, even within the same patch and story arc. Consult the individual entry rather than inferring support from the surrounding quest.

You can avoid human matchmaking for a large portion of the dungeon journey, but you should expect some progression gates to use trials, raids or other duties with their own party requirements.

How to run a supported story dungeon with NPCs
- Identify the duty. Read the quest objective and note the exact dungeon name. Similar names or nearby quest steps can point to different duty types.
- Check support. Open Duty → Duty Support, or inspect the entrance. A supported entrance has the special Duty Support icon. If the duty is not listed, treat that as a real limitation rather than a temporary queue problem.
- Select the duty. Choose the dungeon from the available list. The screen will show the NPC party associated with that duty.
- Review the roster. Some duties allow you to switch available NPCs. For A Realm Reborn instanced dungeons, the party is preset according to the official manual.
- Register and commence. Confirm the NPC party, register for the duty, and choose Commence when prompted. No player matchmaking queue is required for this route.
- Repeat the check for the next objective. A successful NPC dungeon does not make the next trial or raid solo-compatible. Evaluate each duty separately.
NPC run versus a player-matched run
The documented practical difference is who fills the party. The official feature description establishes NPC replacement for certain dungeons; it does not establish a universal difference in clear speed, difficulty, rewards or NPC behavior. The comparison below keeps those limits explicit.

If your priority is avoiding social pressure, Duty Support addresses that specific concern. If your priority is a particular clear-time or reward outcome, the cited documentation does not provide a universal answer, so do not choose a route on an assumed performance difference.

Check before you travel
When a quest adds a dungeon objective, open Duty Support before teleporting or walking to the entrance. This immediately tells you whether the duty is on the supported roster and avoids mistaking a missing queue pop for a technical fault.

Treat every story gate as a separate decision
Keep three categories in mind: supported dungeons, duties that require a player queue, and content whose exact requirements you need to inspect. A dungeon in one expansion may support NPCs while a trial in the same expansion uses an eight-player format. The story’s location or level is not a substitute for the duty entry.
Use the official list when a guide disagrees
Expansion guides can age as new patches add support. The live manual is the authoritative place to verify the current list, and the in-game menu reflects what your character can select at that moment. Patch 7.5’s additions demonstrate why a static list can omit newly supported duties.
Plan for a mixed experience
A solo-oriented playthrough can use NPCs for many required dungeons and still reach duties built for larger parties. “Solo-friendly” therefore describes how you handle supported dungeon segments, not a promise that the entire main scenario contains no multiplayer encounters.
Common sticking points and what they mean
The Duty Support option is missing
First verify the exact duty name and check the official list. If the duty is not listed, it is outside the documented Duty Support scope. Also check that you are looking at the duty entrance or the Duty menu rather than a different activity with a similar name.
The NPC lineup cannot be changed
This is expected for A Realm Reborn instanced dungeons, whose NPC parties are preset. Other duties may expose a switchable roster; the available controls are duty-specific.
The next quest sends you to an eight-player activity
An eight-player label signals a group-sized duty, but the exact entry still controls access. Patch 7.5’s Unmaking and Patch 7.4’s AAC Heavyweight Tier are documented eight-player examples; Windurst: The Third Walk is documented as either an eight-player party or a 24-player alliance. Check whether your particular entry appears in Duty Support before queuing normally.
You are worried about making mistakes with strangers
That concern is precisely where supported NPC runs help: the party is supplied by the system, so you are not asking other players to join that dungeon. For an unsupported trial or raid, however, Duty Support cannot be assumed; the duty’s own requirements determine whether human players are involved. The official Lodestone beginner guide uses questions such as “Do I have to run dungeons with strangers?” and “What if I make mistakes and bother other players?” as recognizable beginner concerns, but it does not turn them into a measured statistic. Bottom line for a solo player
Final Fantasy XIV supports a substantially solo-friendly main-story route: use Duty Support to enter listed progression dungeons with NPC companions, including supported duties across A Realm Reborn through Dawntrail. The system is easy to start from the Duty menu or a marked entrance, but it is not a blanket single-player mode. Preset NPCs apply to A Realm Reborn dungeons, support can differ from one duty to the next, and current patch notes continue to expand the list. Before every story instance, check the duty entry; that one habit tells you whether you can continue with NPCs or should prepare for a player-sized trial, raid or alliance duty.
