Kingdom Hearts Games in Order: A Beginner’s Guide to the Story and Timeline

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

For a first playthrough, follow the order in which the story was introduced: Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, then the remaining story entries in the HD collections before Kingdom Hearts III and its Re Mind DLC. Do not begin with the oldest events in the fictional timeline. That chronology is designed for people who already know the series, not for a newcomer.

The collections are the practical way to follow this route. HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX contains the original game and most early entries; HD 2.8 adds the bridge to the third numbered game; and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind completes the Dark Seeker Saga. Some entries are cinematic story presentations rather than playable remasters, so the package names alone do not tell you what you will play.

The recommended Kingdom Hearts order for beginners

Use this sequence for your first run. It preserves the reveals, character introductions and explanations as audiences originally received them while still fitting the modern collections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Kingdom Hearts -Final Mix- — the starting point and Sora’s first adventure.
  2. Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories — continue immediately into Castle Oblivion and its memory-based story.
  3. Kingdom Hearts II -Final Mix- — resumes Sora’s journey after a year of sleep.
  4. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days — watch the collection’s cinematic presentation after Kingdom Hearts II; it supplies Roxas and Organization XIII context without requiring a separate playable release.
  5. Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep -Final Mix- — play the three connected scenarios featuring Terra, Ventus and Aqua.
  6. Kingdom Hearts Re:coded — watch its cinematic presentation for the story developments that lead toward the next phase.
  7. Dream Drop Distance HD — the major preparation chapter for the third numbered game.
  8. χ Back Cover — watch this film-length presentation for the ancient Keyblade-era setup. Its events occur long before Sora, but its purpose for a new player is to establish the background that becomes relevant later.
  9. 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage- — a short playable bridge centered on Aqua and the realm of darkness.
  10. Kingdom Hearts III, followed by the Re Mind DLC — the conclusion of the Dark Seeker Saga’s main arc.

There is one reasonable variation: watch χ Back Cover immediately before Dream Drop Distance HD if you prefer to see its ancient-world setup earlier, or immediately before Kingdom Hearts III if you want to postpone the historical material. Neither choice changes the core beginner recommendation: do not reorder the whole series by fictional date.

Why release order works better than chronological order

The series introduces information in layers

The first Kingdom Hearts establishes Sora, Donald and Goofy, the search for Sora’s friends, and the spread of darkness. Re:Chain of Memories then turns that search into a conflict over memory in Castle Oblivion. Kingdom Hearts II assumes you have experienced those ideas and begins after Sora’s year of sleep. Its emotional impact depends on meeting Roxas and understanding the Organization through the information revealed in the first two games.

358/2 Days fills in Roxas’s time with Organization XIII, while Birth by Sleep moves to an earlier generation and follows Terra, Ventus and Aqua. Playing those stories strictly by their internal dates would expose answers that the numbered games deliberately hold back. Release-oriented play lets each game answer questions raised by the previous one.

Chronology is a reference tool, not a first-playthrough route

Square Enix’s official timeline reaches back to the ancient Keyblade era in χ Back Cover, then to the events of Birth by Sleep, before returning to Sora’s original adventure. 0.2 Birth by Sleep follows Aqua in the realm of darkness and is framed as a connection toward Kingdom Hearts III. This makes a single date-sorted list misleading: the series contains games, films, mobile-era narratives and short bridge experiences made for different purposes.

If you want to study the fiction after finishing the saga, consult the official timeline and use it as a map of eras. For a first run, let the games decide when each fact is disclosed.

What the HD collections actually contain

Collection names are purchasing groupings, not chronological instructions. The following table separates playable games from cinematic presentations.

Collection Included experiences How to treat them
KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX-; Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories; Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days; Kingdom Hearts II -FINAL MIX-; Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep -FINAL MIX-; Kingdom Hearts Re:coded The numbered and subtitle games are playable. 358/2 Days and Re:coded are presented as cinematic story material in the collection rather than as full playable remasters.
KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-; Dream Drop Distance HD; χ Back Cover Dream Drop Distance HD and 0.2 are playable. χ Back Cover is a cinematic presentation of the ancient Keyblade-era story.
KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind Kingdom Hearts III and the Re Mind DLC Play the main game first, then install and complete Re Mind as its additional story and post-game content.

Square Enix’s combined KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] groups the three packages above, taking you from the original game through Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. It is convenient if you want the complete modern set, but its existence does not turn the collection menu into a chronological sequence.

What to do in each entry

1. Kingdom Hearts Final Mix

Begin here even if you have seen a later game first. Sora leaves home after his friends disappear and travels with Donald and Goofy while worlds are threatened by darkness. The game teaches the series’ central vocabulary—Keyblades, Heartless, worlds and the bonds between characters—without assuming previous knowledge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finish the main story and any optional content you want before moving on. The Final Mix edition is the expanded version represented in the HD collection, so a modern player does not need to locate the original release separately.

2. Re:Chain of Memories

Continue with Re:Chain of Memories. Sora’s search leads to Castle Oblivion, where memories become both the setting and the game’s central conflict. Its card-based combat is unlike the other console entries: build decks, manage room cards and learn how enemy patterns interact with your available cards.

If the combat feels unfamiliar, lower the difficulty rather than skipping the story. The game’s narrative explains changes in Sora’s relationships and prepares the circumstances of Kingdom Hearts II.

3. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix

Next play Kingdom Hearts II -Final Mix-. The opening deliberately spends time with Roxas before returning control to Sora, and that structure is important rather than a detour. Sora’s adventure then resumes with Donald and Goofy, expanding the Organization XIII conflict and the consequences of Castle Oblivion.

Do not place 358/2 Days before this game on a first run. Its backstory is more effective once you have encountered the people and questions that it explains.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

4. 358/2 Days (cinematic presentation)

The HD 1.5+2.5 package presents 358/2 Days as edited cinematic story material. It centers on Roxas’s time with Organization XIII and gives additional perspective on the organization’s members, friendships and routines.

Plan to watch it rather than search for a missing playable campaign in the collection. The presentation is long enough to function as a story chapter, but it does not provide the same interactive systems as a remastered game.

5. Birth by Sleep Final Mix

Birth by Sleep -Final Mix- shifts to three protagonists: Terra, Ventus and Aqua. Complete their scenarios in the game’s suggested order, or use the character order recommended by the game if you want its intended gradual reveal. Each route shows a different view of the events that precede Sora’s journey.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the point where the official timeline’s earlier era becomes useful without taking over the play order. You learn why several later characters and conflicts matter, while still encountering those connections after the numbered games have established their emotional context.

6. Re:coded (cinematic presentation)

Re:coded is also represented as a cinematic story presentation in HD 1.5+2.5. Watch it for the information that points toward the next group of events. Do not treat the collection listing as proof that it is a full playable remake: Square Enix names it among the included experiences, but the HD package formats it as movie content.

7. Dream Drop Distance HD

Dream Drop Distance HD is the principal playable chapter in HD 2.8. It advances Sora’s and Riku’s development and establishes the conditions leading into Kingdom Hearts III. Its mechanics include switching between characters, so pay attention to the on-screen drop gauge and save opportunities when the game changes perspective.

Because this entry assumes the earlier stories, it is a poor starting point even though its title may appear prominent in a store listing. Reach it only after the 1.5+2.5 material.

8. χ Back Cover

χ Back Cover is a cinematic account of the ancient Keyblade era. It is not a conventional numbered game and does not ask you to control a party. Watch it with the understanding that it supplies historical and thematic context rather than a direct continuation of Sora’s current journey.

9. 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-

0.2 is a short, playable bridge focused on Aqua in the realm of darkness. It connects the earlier Birth by Sleep material to the situation that Kingdom Hearts III inherits. Its compact length makes it practical to finish immediately before the third numbered game.

10. Kingdom Hearts III, then Re Mind

Play Kingdom Hearts III after completing HD 2.8. It is the third numbered game and the culmination of the Dark Seeker Saga’s main setup. Once its ending is complete, install and play Re Mind; the DLC revisits the climax from an additional perspective and adds post-game material, so starting it first will spoil the base game’s progression.

Playable games versus cinematic story entries

A frequent source of confusion is assuming every title in a collection is a full game. Use this quick reference when planning your time.

Which collection should you buy?

Starting with HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX

Choose HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX if you are beginning the saga. It contains the original game, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, Birth by Sleep, and the two cinematic presentations needed to understand the early story. You can complete the first five steps of the recommended route from this package.

Adding HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue

HD 2.8 is the next purchase, not an alternative starting point. It supplies Dream Drop Distance HD, 0.2 and χ Back Cover, taking the route to the doorstep of Kingdom Hearts III.

Using the combined Collection [I–III]

The combined collection groups HD 1.5+2.5, HD 2.8 and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. It is the simplest option when you want the complete sequence in one purchase grouping, but inspect the individual entries because two are films rather than playable remasters.

Platforms, editions and regional availability

Square Enix’s current collection page lists the combined collection for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store. The individual collection pages do not necessarily list the same platforms, and the cited current listing is a Japanese Square Enix page. Store catalogs can therefore differ by territory, edition and platform generation.

Before buying, verify three things on your local storefront:

  • Whether the listing is HD 1.5+2.5, HD 2.8, Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind, or the combined Collection [I–III].
  • Whether Re Mind is included or sold separately with the version of Kingdom Hearts III you are choosing.
  • Whether your platform and territory display the same package contents as the publisher’s current page.

Prices, physical stock and regional catalogs change, so the publisher’s live listing and your local store page are the authoritative checks at the time of purchase.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Starting with the fictional beginning: χ Back Cover and Birth by Sleep occur earlier in the timeline, but they are not beginner openings. Use the release-oriented route first.
  • Assuming every collection entry is playable: 358/2 Days, Re:coded and χ Back Cover are cinematic presentations in these packages.
  • Skipping Re:Chain of Memories: its combat differs from the numbered games, but its memory story explains the setup for Kingdom Hearts II.
  • Watching 358/2 Days before Kingdom Hearts II: that placement gives away context that Kingdom Hearts II was designed to reveal first.
  • Playing Re Mind before Kingdom Hearts III: the DLC assumes knowledge of the base game’s ending.
  • Buying by title alone: check the exact edition, platform, territory and whether downloadable content is included.

The timeline in broad eras

After your first playthrough, the official timeline can be understood in four broad layers. The ancient Keyblade era is represented by χ Back Cover. The pre-Sora era follows Terra, Ventus and Aqua in Birth by Sleep. Sora’s original adventure begins with Kingdom Hearts, continues through Castle Oblivion and the Organization XIII conflict in Re:Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II, and is expanded by the cinematic side stories. Finally, Dream Drop Distance, 0.2 and Kingdom Hearts III move the saga toward its major confrontation.

That outline explains why the order can feel non-linear without being random: each release adds a new historical layer while relying on the player’s knowledge of earlier releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How large is the series?

Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million units in global package shipments and digital sales in 2025. This is a publisher-reported, series-wide aggregate, not the sales total for Kingdom Hearts III, any collection or any single platform.

Bottom line for a first playthrough

Start with HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX and follow the story in release-oriented presentation order: Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, the 358/2 Days film, Birth by Sleep, and the Re:coded film. Continue with HD 2.8’s Dream Drop Distance, χ Back Cover and 0.2, then finish Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind. Save strict chronology for a second pass, when the series’ historical jumps enhance rather than spoil its reveals.
