First comes a sudden optical brightening. Then infrared emission that can reveal dust. Then follow-up spectroscopy of the gas and the star itself. In other systems, the evidence is indirect: odd chemical abundances, unusual rotation, or X-ray spectral changes. How strong the conclusion is depends on one thing. Did observers catch the event as it changed, or only a possible aftermath?
The clearest observed case: ZTF SLRN-2020
NASA’s 2023 account describes ZTF SLRN-2020 as the first observed case of a star swallowing a planet. The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) detected an optical flash. NEOWISE data then showed that the object had brightened in infrared about a year before the flash. That pointed to dust and helped researchers recognize the event as unusual. The original interpretation was that an aging star had swelled into a red giant and engulfed a close, likely Jupiter-sized planet.

The sequence is the lesson. A transient survey finds the unexpected brightening, and infrared monitoring can expose a dusty lead-in or aftermath. NASA reported the event at about 12,000 light-years away, with the likely planet orbiting closer to its star than Mercury does to the Sun. Those details belong to this case. They are not requirements for every engulfment.
“This type of event has been predicted for decades, but until now we have never actually observed how this process plays out.” — Kishalay De, MIT, lead author of the original study (NASA JPL, 2023)

How Webb revised the interpretation
In a follow-up published April 10, 2025, NASA reported observations from Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) and Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec). They showed a hot gas disk close to the star and an expanding cloud of cooler dust. Webb spectroscopy identified molecules in the disk, including carbon monoxide.
The central star was also dimmer than expected if it had swollen into a red giant. The team therefore favored a different story. The planet’s orbit gradually decayed until it plunged into a star that had not expanded to meet it.

Webb did not witness the initial plunge. It examined the scene afterward. NASA describes this as the only event observed in action in that report, with Webb giving an unusually detailed view of the aftermath. This shows that discovery and explanation are separate stages. The flash and the infrared brightening raised the engulfment idea. Higher-resolution infrared data on the surroundings and the star tested how it happened.

Other clues, and how certain each one is
Most candidate cases lack a time-resolved event. Each of these clues is weaker, and each has a different kind of uncertainty.
Chemical composition
Co-natal stars formed together and should have similar compositions. A 2024 study compared 91 such pairs. It found at least seven instances of possible planetary ingestion, an 8% occurrence rate in that sample and method. This is not a universal rate for stars. The sources reviewed give no single general percentage for all stars that undergo engulfment.

X-ray spectra and infalling material
NASA’s 2018 Chandra account of the young star RW Aur A describes X-ray spectral changes used to probe the density and composition of material around the star. An excess of iron was interpreted as possible planetesimal material entering the disk. The explanation was not definitive, and the material in question is planetesimals rather than a full planet.

Chandra’s 2010 release on BP Psc discusses rapid rotation and surrounding material as possible signs of recent engulfment. It also notes uncertainty over whether the companion was a giant planet or another kind of object. Clues like these can support a hypothesis, but they are not an observation of the engulfment itself.

A companion’s influence is not engulfment
NASA reported that Hubble and ground-based observations of Betelgeuse showed a pattern consistent with a companion star producing a wake in its atmosphere. That is evidence of an orbiting companion and its effect. It does not show that Betelgeuse has swallowed anything.

| Signal | What it can show | Caught in action? | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optical flash (ZTF) | A sudden event | Yes (ZTF SLRN-2020) | Does not reveal the mechanism |
| Infrared excess (NEOWISE, Webb) | Dust, gas, a timeline | Yes, plus aftermath | Webb changed the explanation to orbital decay |
| Chemical abundances | Possible past ingestion | No | Statistical, sample-specific |
| X-ray spectra | Composition of infalling material | Partly, as changing spectra | Explanation not definitive |
| Rapid rotation, surrounding material | Possible recent engulfment | No | Companion type uncertain |
When judging any claim, ask four questions:
- Did observers catch a changing event, or only a later state?
- Which measurement was used: optical brightness, infrared emission, spectral lines, X-rays, or abundances?
- Does the observation constrain the mechanism, or only suggest material transfer?
- Do alternative explanations remain?
Not every infrared excess, fast rotator or chemical oddity is proof of engulfment. “Companion” can also mean different objects. The best-documented transient case involves a planet, while other candidates involve planetesimals or an uncertain companion.
The Bottom Line
Detection starts with a flash and infrared dust, but a brightening alone never settles the mechanism. ZTF SLRN-2020 shows this: Webb’s follow-up moved the explanation from expansion-driven engulfment to orbital decay. Chemical, rotational and X-ray clues remain suggestive and case-dependent.
