Start by working out what was exposed. A leaked password and a leaked Social Security number call for different responses, and most of the damage from a breach is avoidable if you match your actions to the data involved. This checklist follows U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and IdentityTheft.gov guidance and is written for readers in the United States.
Step 1: Read the notice and identify what was exposed
The FTC’s consumer page opens with the question “Did you get a notice that says your personal information was exposed in a data breach?” and sends readers to IdentityTheft.gov for steps tailored to the information involved. Your first job is to find in the notice which data types were named: login credentials, financial account numbers, a Social Security number, or something else.

- If the notice looks suspicious, don’t use the links or phone numbers in it. Go to the organization’s official website, or to contact details you find independently, and confirm the breach there.
- Don’t assume this breach needs the same response as the last one. Every later step depends on this one.
Step 2: Secure the affected accounts
Do this for any breach that touched logins, whatever else was exposed.

- Change the login, password and PIN on the affected account.
- Use a new password that you don’t use on any other service. Reused passwords let one breach unlock your other accounts.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever it’s offered. In the FTC’s words (What To Know About Identity Theft, September 2024): “Multi-factor authentication makes it harder for scammers to log in to your accounts if they do get your username and password.”
- If you already know fraud happened, call the company’s fraud department. Ask it to close or freeze the affected account.
Step 3: If your Social Security number was exposed, check your credit
A Social Security number can be used to open new accounts in your name, so look at your credit records.

- Get your free credit reports and look for accounts or activity you don’t recognize.
- Consider a credit freeze or a fraud alert (compared below).
- Keep checking periodically. The FTC recommends this even when the first review finds nothing suspicious.
Step 4: Choose between a credit freeze and a fraud alert
The two tools do different things. A freeze restricts access to your credit report, which makes it harder for someone to open a new account in your name. A fraud alert leaves the report accessible but asks creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity.

Step 5: If you find misuse, use the official recovery route
- Contact the company where the fraud occurred, and secure or close the account.
- Report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery steps it gives you. The FTC also offers its identity-theft recovery guide for free bulk order.
- Be wary of unsolicited calls, texts or emails offering to help with the breach. Scammers use breach news as cover. Reach the affected company only through contact details you found on its official site.
Step 6: Use free protection offered by the breached organization
If the organization responsible offers free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance, the FTC advises taking it. Read the notice and the service terms to see what’s covered and for how long. The guidance reviewed here doesn’t establish any paid add-on, such as a subscription, security key or printed guide, as necessary.

The credit-bureau mechanisms and federal reporting routes above are U.S.-specific. Elsewhere, look to your national privacy regulator, your country’s identity-theft reporting service and its credit-reporting system. The guidance used here doesn’t cover those jurisdiction-specific steps.
