The best way to keep full quality is to send the original file directly. On a compatible Android phone, use Quick Share with AirDrop. If the phone isn’t compatible, use Quick Share’s QR-code route. For many files or longer-term access, use a cloud link set to original quality. Quality is usually lost not in the transfer itself but by format conversion, compressed backup settings, or an app that resizes images on the way.
Pick the right route first
| Situation | Route | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Phones are together and the Android model is supported | Quick Share ↔ AirDrop | Needs supported hardware, Bluetooth proximity, AirDrop visibility and the recipient’s acceptance. Per Google, no cloud upload in this workflow. |
| Phones are together but the Android model isn’t supported | Quick Share QR code | Both phones need internet. Files are hosted temporarily by Google. |
| A collection, or access over time | Google Photos shared album or link, or an iCloud link | Upload required; links can be forwarded. |
| You need edit history and metadata | AirDrop or iCloud link with “All Photos Data” | iPhone to recipient only; see below. |
Google describes Quick Share as sending “full-resolution photos and videos without losing any of their original detail.” That is the company’s own description of the feature, not an independent test result.

Check that your Android phone supports it
Sending to an iPhone through the AirDrop prompt works only on selected Android models. Google’s Help page lists the Pixel 8a or later and selected models from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion and Motorola. The list changes, so check your exact model on Google’s live Quick Share Help page.
Steps
- On the iPhone, open AirDrop settings and set visibility to Everyone for 10 minutes.
- On the Android phone, select the photos or files and choose Share > Quick Share.
- Pick the nearby iPhone from the list.
- Have the iPhone owner accept the transfer.

QR-code fallback for unsupported phones
- On Android, open Quick Share and select the items.
- Tap Use QR code.
- The iPhone user scans the code with the camera and opens the secure Google web page. The download starts there.
- Images can be saved to Photos and documents to Files.
- Both devices need internet access, and mobile data charges may apply off Wi-Fi.
- Google says files are encrypted, hosted temporarily and available for 24 hours. They don’t count against the sender’s Google Drive storage.
- Google’s current limits are 10 GB per 24 hours and 1,000 files per session.
- Some files may arrive as a ZIP.
- Google’s iOS instructions say videos can be downloaded from that page but not saved or shared directly from it. Check that a video actually lands where you expect it.
Stop the iPhone from converting your files
In Photos, open an item, tap Share, then Options. Apple’s iPhone User Guide documents these controls:
- Format > Current: prevents format conversion. Choose this for a faithful copy.
- Format > Automatic: picks a format suited to the situation.
- Format > Most Compatible: may convert files to JPEG or MOV. It’s convenient but not the original.
- Location: turn it off to leave out location data. Apple provides the switch, but don’t assume any route strips metadata by itself.
- All Photos Data: Apple says it shares “the original file with edit history and metadata; the recipient can view and modify the current version (available with AirDrop and iCloud links only).”
- iCloud Link: shares a URL for viewing or downloading, which Apple says stays available for 30 days.
Cloud sharing without a quality hit
Google Photos backup quality
If the originals live in Google Photos, the backup setting matters. Google says Original quality keeps photos and videos at the captured resolution with no quality change, and it uses Google Account storage. Storage saver may compress files. Per Google’s current Help guidance, photos above 16 MP are resized to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p. The format may change, for example to JPEG. Some file types are exempt and stay at original size. If you share from a Storage saver library, the recipient may get less than the phone captured.

Shared albums and links
Google says shared-album links are unguessable, but anyone who has an active link can open it, and can pass it on. Removing a person from the album doesn’t revoke the link. Reset link sharing to invalidate the old URL.
Messaging apps
Chat apps are a common place for images to get compressed, but behavior differs by app and changes over time. Look for a “send as file” or “document” option, or an original-quality setting, in the app’s own settings. Then compare the received file’s dimensions and size with the original. Don’t rely on the app’s preview.

- Check that location data is present or absent, as you intended.
- For a large batch, count the files received. QR sessions top out at 1,000 files.
