To access personal information and online tools on VA.gov, you need to sign in through a supported provider and complete identity verification if prompted. The provider checks that you are the person you claim to be, then connects that verified identity to VA access. This protects your account; it does not determine whether you qualify for a VA benefit.
What identity verification does—and what it does not do
Identity verification, also called identity proofing, is the step that confirms an account belongs to the person claiming it. VA’s sign-in providers use personal information and identification to make that check. Once the identity is verified and connected to VA, you can use the online services available through your account.

VA says the check helps protect people from scammers who might create an account in a veteran’s name to reach personal information or benefits. It is an account-security measure, not a benefits application or eligibility review. Completing it does not approve a claim, change a benefit decision, or replace any evidence a particular claim may require.
VA describes identity verification as generally a one-time proofing step. That is different from proving yourself again each time you sign in: sign-in security is handled by your provider’s authentication process, which may ask for a second factor. If you cannot get into an account later, use the provider’s current recovery instructions; the pages described here do not establish a universal rule for when every account must be reverified.

Which sign-in providers can you use?
VA’s current general guidance lists ID.me, Login.gov, and CLEAR as sign-in providers for VA.gov. You use a provider account to sign in, and the provider handles the identity check. Available options and the exact screens can change, so follow the live VA.gov instructions for the provider you select rather than assuming that every provider uses the same documents or steps.
| Provider | What VA guidance establishes | Online or assisted routes described by VA | Identity documents described for the online route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Login.gov | VA’s Login.gov guide describes signing in through VA.gov, completing the verification prompt, saving a recovery key, and consenting to share verified information with VA. | Online verification and in-person verification at participating USPS locations. | Valid, unexpired U.S. driver’s license or other state-issued ID, according to VA’s general guidance. |
| ID.me | VA’s ID.me guide sends users from the VA.gov dashboard to ID.me to complete the identity check. | Self-service, a video-call option for people who need assistance, and an in-person option. | For self-service, VA lists a valid, unexpired U.S. driver’s license, state ID, passport, or passport card. |
| CLEAR | VA’s general sign-in guidance lists CLEAR as an option. | Provider-specific routes are not stated in the cited general VA guidance. | Requirements are not stated in the cited general VA guidance. |
The table reflects the routes and document examples described in VA’s general identity-verification guidance and its Login.gov and ID.me instructions. It is not a guarantee that a particular document or route will be accepted in every case. For CLEAR, check the current VA and provider instructions because the general VA guidance listed here does not provide the same route-level details.
VA’s pages document different routes; they do not establish that one provider is universally easier or safer than another. Choose an available provider whose instructions and verification options fit your situation. Do not create another account simply because a particular screen or document option is unfamiliar; first check the provider’s help information and VA’s current sign-in guidance.

How to verify your identity through VA.gov
The basic sequence is to start from VA.gov, use a supported provider, complete that provider’s identity check, and authorize the connection to VA when prompted. Depending on the provider and method, the process may include entering personal details, uploading or presenting identification, and confirming information using a phone or camera-equipped device. VA estimates that verification often takes about 10 minutes; that is an estimate, not a promised completion time.
- Open VA.gov and start the sign-in process. Use the official VA.gov sign-in entry point and select an available provider. If you already use one of the supported providers, sign in with that account rather than assuming you need to create a new one.
- Follow the identity-verification prompt. The provider will show the next steps for your account and route. Requirements differ, so use the instructions on screen and the provider-specific VA guidance.
- Provide the requested identity information and evidence. Depending on the route, you may enter personal information and present or submit an eligible government ID. Some online flows use a phone or tablet camera. Do not send identity documents through an email or link that you did not reach through the official sign-in process.
- Complete the provider’s sign-in security step if asked. The provider may require its configured multifactor authentication (MFA), such as a code or another approved method. This is separate from the identity proofing itself.
- Review and approve the connection to VA. For Login.gov, VA’s instructions include consenting to share verified information with VA. Follow the corresponding on-screen instructions for any other provider.
- Keep account-recovery information safe. Login.gov’s VA guide advises saving the personal recovery key. Store it somewhere secure and accessible to you, not in a place another person can readily use to take over your account.
Login.gov: what to expect
To use the Login.gov route described by VA, begin at VA.gov and sign in with Login.gov. If VA.gov asks you to verify your identity, continue to Login.gov and follow its verification steps. VA’s guide then has you agree to share the verified information with VA so the account can be connected. Save the recovery key as directed during the process.
VA says the online Login.gov path accepts a valid, unexpired U.S. driver’s license or another state-issued ID. A person who cannot use a smartphone or tablet camera can use an in-person verification route at participating USPS locations, according to VA. Check the current Login.gov and VA instructions before traveling: not every post office participates, and the live directions determine what to bring and how to complete the appointment or visit.

ID.me: what to expect
VA’s ID.me instructions start from the VA.gov dashboard and direct you to ID.me to complete the check. VA recommends self-service for a straightforward case. For that online self-service route, VA lists a valid, unexpired U.S. driver’s license, state ID, passport, or passport card. Other document or assisted options may be available, but the document list for self-service should not be treated as a universal list for every route.

What to prepare before you start
Check the current VA instructions for your chosen provider first. Having the right account details and a suitable ID nearby can make the process more straightforward, but not every item applies to every provider or route.

- Provider account access: Have the email address and password for the provider you plan to use. If that account already uses MFA, make sure you can access its configured method.
- Identity information: Be ready to provide personal information the provider requests. VA’s general guidance identifies Social Security information as part of what may be needed; enter it only in the provider’s official verification flow.
- Government photo identification: Check that your document is valid and unexpired and that it matches the document types accepted for your exact route. The Login.gov and ID.me examples above are not interchangeable guarantees.
- Device and connection: Some online routes require a camera-equipped smartphone or tablet. A computer with internet access may also be useful for completing steps or uploading documents. If you do not have the device a route requires, check in-person options rather than buying equipment solely for verification.
- Phone access, if requested: A U.S. phone number may be needed for some flows or sign-in security methods. The exact phone requirements depend on the provider and route.
Do not assume that a passport, state ID, or any other single document will work for every provider. Nor should you assume that having an ID alone is sufficient: the provider may ask for account access, personal details, a camera, or a separate sign-in security factor. Read the instructions for the specific route you intend to use.

Identity verification answers, “Is this account being connected to the person it claims to represent?” MFA answers, “Can the person signing in prove control of an additional factor associated with the account?” They protect different stages of access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVA lists possible MFA methods that can include an authenticator app, a security key, a phone code or call, and backup codes. Which methods you can use depends on the provider. A physical security key is an optional sign-in factor; it is not an identity document and does not replace identity verification. Before purchasing one, confirm that your chosen provider supports the key and that it works with your devices.

What if you cannot verify online?
If the online flow stops because you lack a camera-equipped device, do not have an accepted document, or need help with a verification step, first use the provider’s current help instructions. VA describes in-person alternatives for Login.gov at participating USPS locations and an in-person option for ID.me. ID.me’s VA instructions also describe video-call assistance. These are provider-specific routes, not a single universal VA identity desk, and each route may have different availability or requirements.
If you cannot use online account access at all, you can still manage VA benefits and health care through phone, mail, or in-person channels, according to VA. Those channels let you continue dealing with VA without a supported sign-in, although online tools and account features will not be available without one. Use the relevant VA contact or service instructions for the task you need to complete.
Quick Recap
How to avoid common verification problems
- The provider does not accept your ID: Check the route-specific document list and expiration requirements. If your document is not listed or the automated check fails, consult the provider’s assisted or in-person options rather than repeatedly submitting the same evidence.
- You cannot use the camera step: Check whether the provider offers an in-person route. VA specifically describes participating-USPS in-person verification for Login.gov and in-person options for ID.me.
- You are stuck at a sign-in code or second factor: This is an account-access or MFA problem, not necessarily a failed identity check. Use the provider’s account-recovery and MFA help instructions. For Login.gov, retain and use the recovery information as instructed.
- You are unsure whether the VA connection was completed: Return to VA.gov through its official sign-in page and follow the status or verification prompt shown there. Do not assume that finishing a provider screen automatically completed every VA connection step; follow any consent or return-to-VA instruction.
- You would rather not create an online account: You do not have to use an online account to continue managing benefits and care. Use VA’s phone, mail, or in-person channels for the service you need.
