What you need before starting
Install or update Google Translate on an Android phone or tablet, or on an iPhone or iPad. Google’s current instructions say Live translate works with the latest version of the app. The precise controls and supported language combinations can vary by platform and app version, so check whether your selected pair exposes Live translate before you begin.

- A supported Android or iOS device with the current Google Translate app.
- Microphone permission for Google Translate.
- The two languages you want to use, selected inside the app.
- A reasonably clear audio environment. Headphones are optional; the phone speaker can play the translated speech.
An internet connection is normally the safest assumption. Google documents offline Live translate only for eligible Pixel phones and a listed set of language pairs; its Android help currently identifies Pixel 9, 10 and 11 users for that feature. Offline eligibility and language lists can change, so verify them in the current Android help before relying on the feature without data service.
Prepare the phone and participants
Before starting a real conversation, open the app while you still have reliable connectivity and test both directions. Confirm that the same pair of languages appears for each participant and that the Conversation control is available. If you expect to use headphones, connect them first and play a short test phrase. If you plan to use the speaker, place the phone where both people can hear it without standing directly beside another phone running the same translation.

Explain the turn-taking pattern before anyone speaks: one person talks, waits for the translated audio or text, and then the other person replies. The microphone is designed to detect when one language stops and the other starts, but it still benefits from clear pauses. This is especially important for names, numbers, addresses and long sentences.
Start a two-way voice conversation
- Open or update Google Translate. On Android, use the Play Store; on iPhone or iPad, use the App Store. Launch the app after updating.
- Tap Live translate. This control appears at the bottom of the mobile app. If you do not see it, check that the app is current and that your device, region and selected languages support the feature.
- Choose the two languages. Set one language for each participant. Do not assume that every language pair supports every Live translate mode; the app’s available controls are the authoritative check.
- Select Conversation. This is the mode for spoken turn-taking. It is different from the ordinary Speak control, which translates one spoken input at a time.
- Take turns speaking. One person speaks, pauses, and lets the app process the utterance before the other person replies. Google says the microphone automatically detects when one language stops and the other starts.
- Listen to the result. Translated speech can play through the phone’s built-in speaker or connected headphones. Keep the volume high enough for both participants, while avoiding feedback from a second nearby device.
- Pause or leave when finished. Use the on-screen Speak control to pause or resume where available, and use Back to exit. The visible control layout may differ between Android and iOS versions.
Use Face to face for a shared screen
Conversation mode is primarily an audio exchange. If both people want to follow the written transcript and translation, tap Face to face from the Live translate interface. The display divides into two halves, with each speaker’s language and translated text oriented toward that person.
Place the phone between the participants and rotate or position it so each person can comfortably read their half. Face to face does not remove the need to pause between turns; clear pauses still give the microphone time to identify which language is being spoken.

The split view is also useful when audio is difficult to hear. A participant can look at the text to confirm a word, spelling or number before answering. If a line looks wrong, repeat the phrase slowly rather than assuming the displayed translation is correct.
Know which Google Translate mode to choose
Several controls can look similar, but they serve different situations. Use the following distinction before troubleshooting a missing button.

If your goal is a back-and-forth dialogue, choose Live translate and Conversation. The ordinary Speak button is useful for individual phrases, but it is not the app’s dedicated two-way conversation workflow.
What to do when Speak or Conversation is unavailable
Check the language pair
A language may appear in Google Translate’s general language list without being available in every speech or Live translate mode. Select both languages again and look at which controls the app enables. Google’s help pages publish supported languages for Android and iOS, but availability can differ by feature and can change over time.

In the one-phrase speech-input flow, Google says a disabled Speak button means the selected spoken language cannot be translated in that speech-input mode. That signal applies to the mode you are currently using; it does not prove that the language is unavailable for every translation feature.
Confirm microphone permission
Open your device settings, find Google Translate in the app-permission list, and allow microphone access while using the app. Return to Translate and start Live translate again. If the permission was already granted, toggle it off and back on, then restart the app.
Reduce competing sound
Move to a quieter room, bring the phone closer to the speaker, and pause background music or nearby conversations. Google suggests a quiet room, an external microphone, or increased input volume when speech recognition has difficulty hearing a person. These are troubleshooting measures, not requirements for normal use.
Speak in distinct turns
Do not have both participants talk simultaneously. Finish a sentence, pause briefly, and wait for the translated audio before replying. Overlapping voices make language detection and transcription harder even when the selected languages are supported.

Install pending app updates and restart the phone or tablet. If the Live translate control remains absent, the combination of device, region, app version and languages may not currently support it. Try the same language pair on another up-to-date mobile device only as a diagnostic; do not assume that a result on one platform guarantees the same controls on another.
Check audio routing
If text appears but you hear nothing, check the phone’s media volume rather than only the ringtone volume. Confirm that audio has not been routed to disconnected Bluetooth headphones, and check whether the phone is muted. Disconnect and reconnect headphones, then repeat a short phrase. Conversation can use the built-in speaker, so headphones are not required simply to make the mode work.
Why the browser is not a substitute
Google’s computer help explicitly says: “You can’t talk and translate at the same time on Google Translate for the web, but you can use the Translate app on a phone or tablet.” The browser can still translate typed text and support other web functions, but it does not provide the mobile app’s simultaneous live speech-to-speech conversation flow. For a two-way spoken exchange, use the Android or iOS app.

This distinction matters when someone opens translate.google.com on a laptop and looks for the same microphone or Conversation controls shown on a phone. Moving to a tablet with the mobile app is the supported alternative; changing browser tabs or using the desktop microphone does not turn the web page into Live translate.

Headphones, speakers and accessibility
Conversation translations can be heard through the phone speaker or connected headphones. Headphones are optional for ordinary use. They can help when the surroundings are noisy or when you want to keep translated audio from disturbing people nearby.
Listening mode should not be confused with Conversation mode. Google notes that Listening may have a headphone requirement or may be greyed out depending on the platform and connected-audio setup. If Listening is unavailable, that does not necessarily prevent Conversation from working through the speaker.
For someone relying on an audible screen reader, Google recommends headphones because the screen-reader voice can interfere with transcribed speech. Test the screen reader and translation audio before starting an important exchange, and keep the text visible when possible.
Availability, rollout and offline use
Google announced the live conversation feature on August 26, 2025, describing it as available in more than 70 languages. That announcement also described an initial rollout over the following days for users in the United States, Mexico and India. It is a dated rollout statement, not a guarantee that every language pair or mode is available in every country today.
Language support is therefore best treated as a live setting rather than a permanent specification. Check the pair directly in the app, and consult Google’s current Android or iOS Live translate help when planning travel or an offline conversation. A language can be supported for text translation but absent from speech recognition, Conversation, Face to face or offline translation.
Offline Live translate has additional restrictions. Google’s Android documentation currently limits that capability to eligible Pixel 9, Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 users and a published set of language pairs. The device requirement and supported-pair list are subject to change; download or test the required languages before leaving connectivity, rather than discovering the limitation at the destination.

Do not infer offline support from the fact that ordinary typed translation works without a connection. Offline eligibility is tied to specific devices, language pairs and the documented Live translate implementation. If your phone is not an eligible Pixel model, plan to use a connection or a different text-based fallback.

- Agree on the turn-taking rhythm. Tell both participants to wait for the previous translation to finish before replying.
- Use short, complete sentences. Names, addresses, numbers and specialized terms are easier to check when delivered separately.
- Show the text when precision matters. Face to face provides a written view that can expose a misheard word or unfamiliar name.
- Keep the phone stationary. A stable position between speakers gives the microphone a more consistent signal.
- Verify critical details. For medical, legal, immigration, financial or safety-critical communication, confirm names, dates, quantities and instructions with a qualified human interpreter or the relevant official source. Live translation has no published universal accuracy or latency guarantee.
- Have a fallback. If speech recognition fails, switch to Text only or type a phrase manually. If one phrase is all you need, use the ordinary Speak flow instead of restarting a full conversation.
Conversation mode versus one-phrase speech input
The distinction matters because the controls and failure messages are different. In basic speech input, you select source and target languages, tap Speak, and talk when prompted. That workflow is suited to asking for a single direction, translating a sentence, or checking pronunciation.

Live translate with Conversation is designed for alternating speakers. It keeps the exchange moving by listening for a change between the two selected languages and returning spoken translations. Starting with Speak when you need a dialogue can create unnecessary taps and make it appear that the app is not listening continuously.
Planning a trip or appointment
Set up the feature before you arrive at a place where communication matters. Update the app while connected, test the exact language pair, and decide whether speakers, headphones or Face to face text will work best. If you expect poor connectivity, check offline eligibility on the specific phone rather than relying on a general statement that Google Translate supports those languages.
Save a simple fallback plan: use Text only if spoken playback is distracting, type a phrase if recognition is unreliable, and repeat important details in both languages when possible. A phone translation can help with ordinary exchanges, but it should not be the sole safeguard for emergency instructions or other high-consequence decisions.
A quick diagnostic checklist
- Confirm you are in the mobile app, not Google Translate in a desktop browser.
- Update the app and reopen it.
- Tap Live translate at the bottom.
- Choose both languages and verify that Conversation is offered.
- Allow microphone access in the phone’s settings.
- Test one speaker at a time in a quiet location.
- Try Face to face if reading the transcript will help.
- If audio is missing, check the phone volume, mute state and headphone connection.
- If the language control is disabled, check Google’s current platform-specific supported-language list and try Text only or manual input.
- If you need offline use, verify the exact Pixel model and language pair before disconnecting.
What the feature can and cannot promise
Live translate is a practical way to bridge an ordinary conversation, but Google does not publish a universal accuracy rate, response-latency figure or conversation-success statistic for the feature in the documentation described here. Recognition can be affected by accents, overlapping speech, background noise, unusual names and language availability. Treat the displayed or spoken result as a translation aid, not as a guarantee of perfect meaning.
The reliable procedure is straightforward: use the current mobile app, select a supported pair, choose Conversation, pause between speakers, and use Face to face when the written exchange matters. When a control is missing, investigate the language pair, permissions, platform and audio environment before assuming the app is broken.

Is Google Translate’s live conversation perfectly accurate?
