In a compatible 120V MAX product, two 60V MAX batteries are used together. You do not set the battery’s voltage yourself—but you should confirm that the battery, tool and charger are compatible before connecting them.
What changes when you move a FLEXVOLT battery?
The tool platform determines the battery’s operating mode. DEWALT describes FLEXVOLT as a battery system that automatically switches voltages when you change tools. In the company’s manual language, a FLEXVOLT battery on its own, or installed in a DEWALT 20V MAX product, operates as a 20V MAX battery. Installed in a 60V MAX product, it operates as a 60V MAX battery.

That means there is no user-operated voltage selector to change when moving a compatible battery between those tool classes. Insert it as directed by the tool manual; the battery’s mode is automatic. The feature is intended to let a FLEXVOLT battery work across DEWALT’s 20V MAX and 60V MAX platforms, rather than make every DEWALT battery interchangeable with every DEWALT tool.
Operating mode by use
| Where the FLEXVOLT battery is used | Operating mode described by DEWALT | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Not installed in a tool | 20V MAX | Use the handling and storage directions in the battery manual. |
| Compatible 20V MAX tool | 20V MAX | Check the tool’s manual and battery-compatibility information. |
| Compatible 60V MAX tool | 60V MAX | Check the tool’s manual and battery-compatibility information. |
| Compatible 120V MAX product | The manual describes the battery as operating as 60V MAX; the product uses two 60V MAX batteries together. | Confirm the exact battery and two-battery requirements in the product manual. |
The 120V MAX case is not a claim that one FLEXVOLT battery becomes a 120V battery. DEWALT’s DCB612 product information describes 120V MAX compatibility as a configuration combining two DEWALT 60V MAX batteries. The DHS790 manual likewise describes a 120V MAX product as using two 60V MAX batteries.

What “20V MAX” and “60V MAX” mean
The voltage labels need their qualifications. On its DCB606 FLEXVOLT 20V/60V MAX product page, DEWALT says MAX voltage is the initial battery voltage measured without a workload. The same page lists nominal voltages of 18V and 54V alongside the 20V MAX and 60V MAX ratings.
For that battery, the published figures are therefore 20V MAX and 60V MAX initial voltage without a workload, and 18V and 54V nominal voltage. The labels do not mean the battery maintains exactly 20V or 60V under every load or throughout use. Treat the rating as DEWALT presents it, rather than as a promise of a constant voltage reading while working.

MAX is part of the product-platform naming as well as a voltage rating. The paired 20V MAX/60V MAX description identifies the two operating modes; it does not provide a detailed account of the battery’s internal electrical design. DEWALT’s cited product information and manual establish the modes and automatic switching, but do not explain the precise internal switching circuit or cell arrangement. It would be misleading to infer a particular circuit from the voltage labels alone.

How the automatic switch works—and what is established
At the practical level, the change is automatic: use the battery in a compatible tool and it operates in the mode DEWALT specifies for that tool class. DEWALT’s system page describes FLEXVOLT batteries as using technology that automatically switches voltages when you change tools. Its manual language gives the resulting modes: 20V MAX in a 20V MAX product and 60V MAX in a 60V MAX product.

Those statements explain the user-visible behavior, not the circuit-level process. The cited information does not establish which internal components switch, how the cells are grouped, or the exact sequence of electrical events. A specific account of those details would go beyond what DEWALT’s cited material says. For choosing and using a battery, the relevant facts are the compatible tool platform, the specified operating mode, and the exact instructions for the tool and battery.
Check compatibility before choosing a battery
DEWALT says FLEXVOLT batteries are compatible with its 20V MAX and 60V MAX tool platforms. Its system page describes compatibility with 60V MAX tools and more than 300 20V MAX system tools. That is a statement about the FLEXVOLT system—not a guarantee that every DEWALT battery fits or works in every DEWALT tool.

- Find the exact tool model. Read the model number on the tool and look up its product information and instruction manual. Do not decide compatibility from the brand name or platform label alone.
- Check the tool’s approved battery information. Confirm that the manual or product page lists the battery type or platform you intend to use. This is especially important for an older or specialized tool.
- Check the required configuration. Most questions involve a single compatible battery, but the cited 120V MAX example uses two 60V MAX batteries together. Follow the tool manual’s specified count and arrangement.
- Check the charger separately. A battery that fits a tool is not automatically compatible with every charger. Consult the charger and battery documentation rather than assuming charger compatibility from the tool connection.
For a concrete example, DEWALT lists the DCB606 as a FLEXVOLT 20V/60V MAX 6Ah battery and describes it as having tri-platform compatibility and automatic voltage switching. Verify that your particular tool accepts it before purchase; a model’s appearance or a general platform claim is not a substitute for the tool’s compatibility information.
Battery capacity and charger compatibility are separate questions
Capacity, shown in amp-hours (Ah), is not a voltage-mode selector. The DCB606 is a 6Ah battery, but that figure alone does not establish how long it will run a particular tool. Runtime depends on the tool and its use; the cited product information does not provide a like-for-like runtime comparison across battery models. Do not assume that an Ah rating guarantees a specific working time in every tool.

Charger compatibility also needs a model-specific check. DEWALT’s DCB612 product page says that battery is compatible with all 20V MAX chargers. That statement applies to the DCB612 as described on its product page; it should not be widened into a claim that every FLEXVOLT battery works with every DEWALT charger. Check the exact battery and charger documentation before charging.
Common misunderstandings
- “I need to select 20V or 60V before using it.” DEWALT says the FLEXVOLT battery switches automatically when used in a compatible tool. Its manuals specify the operating mode by tool platform.
- “A 120V MAX tool takes one 120V battery.” The cited DEWALT example describes 120V MAX compatibility as two 60V MAX batteries used together.
- “Every DEWALT battery works in every DEWALT tool.” The FLEXVOLT compatibility claim covers stated 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools; it does not establish universal compatibility across all batteries, tools or chargers.
- “20V MAX or 60V MAX is the voltage the battery always sustains.” DEWALT defines the MAX figures on the DCB606 page as initial voltage measured without workload and also lists nominal values of 18V and 54V.
- “A higher Ah figure tells me exactly how long the tool will run.” Capacity is useful for comparing batteries, but the sources do not establish a universal runtime for a given Ah rating across different tools and working conditions.
If the battery does not seem to work in a tool
Do not try to force a fit, alter the battery, or infer compatibility from voltage labels. Use a straightforward check instead:
- Confirm the tool’s exact model and the battery’s model number.
- Look up the tool manual’s approved battery information and confirm the platform and configuration.
- If the tool is a 120V MAX model, check whether it requires two 60V MAX batteries and follow its instructions exactly.
- If the question concerns charging, check the charger manual and the battery’s product information separately. A compatibility statement for one battery model does not establish compatibility for another.
- If the models and instructions indicate compatibility but the battery still does not operate as expected, stop and consult the tool or battery manual’s troubleshooting guidance or DEWALT support. Do not attempt electrical repairs based on assumptions about the internal switching design.
What the official descriptions tell you
DEWALT’s product-system page explains the central promise: FLEXVOLT batteries automatically switch voltage when moved between tools in the 20V MAX and 60V MAX systems. The DHS790 instruction manual spells out the operating modes and mentions the two-battery 120V MAX configuration. The DCB606 product page gives the MAX and nominal voltage qualifications, while the DCB612 page provides a specific charger-compatibility claim. These sources answer what the user needs to know for basic platform selection without establishing the battery’s internal switching circuit.
