Multiply its energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh) by the electricity unit rate that applies when you use it. For illustration, a 2,400-watt kettle running for five minutes uses an estimated 0.2 kWh; at Ofgem’s Great Britain average Direct Debit price-cap rate of 26.32p/kWh for 1 October–31 December 2026, that works out to about 5.26p. Your kettle, boil time and tariff may produce a different cost.
How to calculate the cost of one kettle boil
You need three inputs: the kettle’s power rating in watts, how many minutes it heats, and the electricity unit rate in price per kWh. The calculation estimates energy from the kettle’s rated power and operating time, then prices that energy at your tariff rate.

Dividing watts by 1,000 converts the power rating to kilowatts (kW). Dividing minutes by 60 converts the heating time to hours. Multiplying kW by hours gives energy in kWh. The final multiplication applies your electricity price to that amount of energy.
For example, suppose a kettle is rated at 2,400 W and heats for five minutes. The estimate is (2,400 ÷ 1,000) × (5 ÷ 60) = 0.2 kWh. At a rate of 26.32p/kWh, the arithmetic is 0.2 × 26.32p = 5.264p, or about 5.26p after rounding. This is a worked calculation, not a universal cost or a claim that every kettle uses 0.2 kWh per boil.
Which electricity rate should you use?
Use the unit rate on your own electricity tariff, expressed as a price per kWh. Your bill, supplier account or tariff information should identify it. A headline rate is only a useful substitute when it matches your location, tariff type and the period in which you are using electricity.
For a defined reference point, Ofgem lists an average Direct Debit electricity unit rate of 26.32p/kWh for the Great Britain price-cap period from 1 October to 31 December 2026. It is an average rate for that geography, payment method and period—not a guaranteed rate for an individual household, a rate for every UK tariff, or a worldwide price. Your own unit rate may be different.

Ofgem distinguishes single-rate tariffs from multi-rate tariffs, including Economy 7, where peak and off-peak prices differ. For a multi-rate tariff, use the rate that applies at the time of the boil. If your supplier charges different rates at different times, the same kettle and heating time can have different running costs depending on when you switch it on.
A daily standing charge is a separate part of an electricity bill. Do not add it to the cost of one additional kettle boil: the calculation here is the marginal energy charge for that use, based on the unit rate. Your total bill can include standing charges and other components, but they are not the price of the extra kWh consumed by this particular boil.
Find the kettle’s wattage and heating time
Check the rating label or product specification
Look for the kettle’s power rating on its rating label or in its product specification. The figure is usually shown in watts (W). Use the number for the actual kettle you are calculating rather than assuming all kettles have the same rating. If the label gives a range or more than one electrical figure, use the stated power rating relevant to normal operation; do not substitute a voltage figure for watts.
Measure the heating time for the amount you boil
Time the period during which the kettle is heating, in minutes. Use a consistent start and stop point: from switching it on until it switches off after heating. The result depends on how much water is in the kettle and its starting temperature, so the time for a full kettle may not represent the time for the amount you usually heat. You can calculate separate estimates for different amounts by recording their respective heating times.

A power rating describes the rate at which an appliance uses energy while operating, not the total energy required to complete every task. A lower-wattage kettle uses energy more slowly while it is on, but it may run longer. The formula therefore includes both rating and time; wattage alone cannot establish which kettle will use less energy for heating the same water.
Worked examples at the October–December 2026 reference rate
The following calculations use the same illustrative 2,400 W rating and Ofgem’s 26.32p/kWh Great Britain average Direct Debit price-cap rate for 1 October–31 December 2026. The heating times are hypothetical inputs to show how the arithmetic changes; they are not measured or typical boil times.
| Illustrative heating time | Estimated energy | Cost at 26.32p/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | 2.4 × (1 ÷ 60) = 0.04 kWh | 0.04 × 26.32p = 1.0528p, about 1.05p |
| 3 minutes | 2.4 × (3 ÷ 60) = 0.12 kWh | 0.12 × 26.32p = 3.1584p, about 3.16p |
| 5 minutes | 2.4 × (5 ÷ 60) = 0.2 kWh | 0.2 × 26.32p = 5.264p, about 5.26p |
These examples isolate the effect of heating time by holding power and tariff constant. In real use, the heating duration can change with the amount and starting temperature of the water. The table is not a price list for every kettle: replace both the rating and the time with your own values to estimate your own boil.
Estimate the cost over a day or month
Once you have a per-boil estimate, multiply it by the number of boils in the period you care about. Keep the arithmetic tied to your own usage rather than treating a household example as a typical pattern.

Using the five-minute, 2,400 W example above, the unrounded cost is 5.264p per boil. If, purely as an illustration, someone boiled that kettle four times a day for 30 days at the same 26.32p/kWh rate, the estimated energy charge would be 5.264p × 4 × 30 = 631.68p, or about £6.32. This multiplication assumes every boil has the same energy use and tariff; it does not include the daily standing charge.
If your usage varies, calculate each kind of boil separately—for example, one estimate for a smaller amount and another for a full kettle—and add the costs for the number of times each occurs. If your tariff varies by time, use the rate applicable to each use rather than multiplying every boil by one rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why your measured cost may differ from the estimate
The formula is a practical estimate based on rated power multiplied by time. Actual consumption can depart from it. Amount of water and its starting temperature affect how long the kettle heats, and the simple calculation does not measure the electricity used during a particular cycle. A precise personal figure therefore needs the actual kettle and use conditions, as well as the applicable tariff rate.
Keep the distinction between power and energy clear. Watts or kilowatts describe how quickly energy is used; kWh describes an amount of energy. A 2.4 kW rating does not mean a kettle consumes 2.4 kWh every time it is switched on. In the five-minute example, the estimated energy is 0.2 kWh because the appliance runs for only five minutes, or one-twelfth of an hour.
Best Value
Rounding can also make an answer appear slightly different. Carry the decimals through the calculation and round the final pence figure to a sensible precision. For the reference example, 5.264p is approximately 5.26p; rounding it earlier can alter the result when multiplying by many boils.
How the older 12p example compares
National Energy Action gives a worked example using a 2,400 W kettle operated for five minutes: the estimated consumption is 0.2 kWh. At its example rate of 12p/kWh, the cost is 2.4p. The arithmetic is sound for those inputs, but the 12p figure is an older example rate with no publication date stated in the retrieved document. It should not be read as a current electricity price.
Using the same estimated 0.2 kWh at Ofgem’s 26.32p/kWh Great Britain average Direct Debit price-cap rate for 1 October–31 December 2026 gives 5.264p, about 5.26p. This comparison changes the unit rate while retaining the same illustrative energy use; it does not establish a typical household bill or the cost for a particular reader.
A quick checklist for your own calculation
- Find the actual kettle’s rating in watts on its label or specification.
- Record the heating time in minutes for the amount of water you want to cost.
- Find your applicable electricity unit rate in price per kWh, including the time-specific rate if your tariff has more than one.
- Calculate kWh with (watts ÷ 1,000) × (minutes ÷ 60).
- Multiply the kWh result by the unit rate to get the estimated energy cost for one boil.
- Multiply by the number of comparable boils to estimate a total for your chosen period.
National Energy Action presents the same method in its appliance-cost guidance: convert watts and minutes to kWh, then multiply the kWh consumed by the price per kWh. The calculation requires no replacement kettle or other purchase; its usefulness comes from using your appliance’s rating, your actual heating time and your own tariff.
