How De-Extinction Projects Could Affect Living Species and Ecosystems

De-extinction projects could restore ecological functions that disappeared with an extinct species, but they could also disrupt living species and ecosystems. A proxy animal might disperse seeds, control prey or reshape vegetation. The same release could introduce competition, predation, hybridisation, disease or unexpected changes to water and fire regimes.

The decisive question is not whether scientists can create an organism with selected extinct-like traits. It is whether a persistent, healthy population in a present-day ecosystem produces a measurable conservation benefit without causing unacceptable harm. IUCN guidance treats any proposed release as a conservation translocation requiring case-by-case evidence, participation and long-term monitoring.

What “de-extinction” means in conservation

In conservation policy, “de-extinction” can suggest that an extinct species has literally been recreated. IUCN’s 2016 Species Survival Commission principles use a more precise concept: creating a proxy of an extinct species. A proxy may share selected genes, anatomy or behaviours with the lost organism, but it is not automatically the same species or a complete recreation of its historical ecology.

That distinction changes how success should be judged. Producing embryos, a few live animals or a captive-bred group demonstrates an engineering or husbandry achievement. It does not demonstrate that the animals can survive, reproduce, persist as a population and deliver a conservation benefit after release. Those outcomes must be measured in the receiving landscape.

IUCN defines conservation translocation as the deliberate, human-mediated movement and release of living organisms for a measurable conservation benefit. A de-extinction release therefore belongs in the same decision framework as any other reintroduction or assisted-movement project, with explicit objectives, risk analysis, monitoring and the ability to change course.

How could de-extinction affect living species?

Effects would arise through the traits selected for the proxy and through its interactions with organisms already present. The pathways below are plausible mechanisms identified in conservation and risk literature; none is guaranteed for every project.

Restoring a missing ecological function

An extinct animal may have once performed a role that is now missing. A large herbivore could have opened dense vegetation, a predator could have suppressed an overabundant prey species, or a fruit-eating animal could have carried seeds over long distances. A proxy designed to perform a similar role might help restore those processes.

Potential benefits include more varied vegetation structure, renewed seed dispersal, altered prey behaviour and improved regeneration of particular plants. These are proposed mechanisms rather than established outcomes from released de-extinction proxies. The relevant test is whether the function is measurably restored under current conditions, not whether the proxy resembles an illustration or fossil description.

Competition with extant species

A released proxy would consume food, occupy shelter and use space that living organisms also need. Competition could be direct, such as two herbivores feeding on the same scarce plants, or indirect, such as one species changing vegetation and reducing habitat for another. Resource overlap may be small in a historical reconstruction yet substantial in a modern landscape with less habitat and fewer food sources.

Assessment should identify which species could lose access to food, nesting sites, water or breeding territories, and whether those resources fluctuate during drought, heat waves or other foreseeable conditions.

Predation and altered prey behaviour

A proxy with predator-like traits could kill living animals or change where and when prey feed. Even without high kill rates, fear effects may push prey into poorer habitat, reduce breeding or alter grazing patterns. Conversely, a proxy intended as prey could become food for current predators, potentially changing predator numbers or disease exposure.

Predation risk must be evaluated for endemic, threatened and functionally important species, not only for abundant generalists. Models should consider what happens if the proxy population grows beyond its initial release target.

Browsing, grazing and habitat engineering

Large-bodied animals can reshape landscapes by browsing woody plants, trampling soil, digging, building paths or moving nutrients. Those actions could reopen grassland or wetlands, but they could also damage rare vegetation, accelerate erosion or reduce cover for small animals. A historical effect is not automatically desirable now: current land use, invasive plants and changed rainfall may produce a different response.

Hybridisation and genetic effects

If a proxy is closely related to a living species, mating or gene flow may be possible. Hybrid offspring could dilute locally adapted genes, create new combinations with uncertain fitness or complicate legal protection for the living species. Even where hybridisation is unlikely, the possibility should be tested genetically and behaviourally before release and monitored afterward.

Disease and parasites

Animals moved between facilities and landscapes can carry pathogens, acquire infections from local wildlife or create new transmission routes. A proxy might be susceptible to diseases already present, serve as a reservoir or expose native species to an infection for which they have little resistance. Quarantine, veterinary screening and post-release health surveillance are therefore ecological safeguards, not merely animal-care details.

Changes to ecosystem processes

Indirect effects can extend beyond species interactions. Altered grazing or digging may change water flow and soil compaction; vegetation changes may influence evaporation and fire regimes; nutrient movement may shift productivity in streams or wetlands. Effects can be beneficial in one location and harmful in another, or beneficial at one population density and damaging at another.

Why historical conditions are not a safe blueprint

Modern ecosystems differ from those in which an extinct organism evolved. Climate has shifted, land has been fragmented, introduced species occupy new niches and human infrastructure constrains movement. A habitat that supported the extinct species may no longer provide enough food, seasonal water or space. Predators and competitors may also be different.

IUCN’s synthetic-biology policy calls for case-by-case assessment because these changes create significant ecological, ethical, economic, social and cultural knowledge gaps. A credible proposal must test habitat suitability under present and foreseeable conditions, including climate projections, rather than assuming that historical range maps identify a viable release site.

What happens if a de-extinct animal is released into the wild?

A release should be treated as a staged intervention rather than a single event. Each stage creates evidence needed for the next decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the conservation outcome. State the measurable result sought, such as increased regeneration of a target plant, reduced browsing pressure from another species or recovery of a defined ecosystem process. “Bring back the species” is not an ecological endpoint.
  2. Characterise the proxy. Document its genetic construction, inherited traits, behaviour, reproductive capacity, welfare risks and differences from the extinct organism. Identify traits that could affect feeding, movement, aggression, disease susceptibility and social structure.
  3. Test the receiving habitat. Verify food, water, shelter, climate tolerance, seasonal conditions, movement corridors and interactions with endemic species. Include foreseeable changes rather than relying only on current measurements.
  4. Analyse plausible harms. Examine competition, predation, browsing, hybridisation, disease transmission and ecosystem-process changes. Include low-probability, high-consequence scenarios and consequences if the population expands.
  5. Use contained or limited trials where justified. Pilot work can reveal behaviour, welfare and ecological interactions before a larger release. It cannot by itself prove landscape-scale success, so trial results must be linked to the stated conservation outcome.
  6. Set baselines and triggers. Measure target species, habitat conditions, disease indicators and ecosystem processes before release. Define thresholds that require reducing, pausing or ending the intervention.
  7. Monitor persistence and impacts. Track survival, reproduction, dispersal, population growth, genetic health, animal welfare and effects on living species over the time needed to detect delayed consequences.
  8. Maintain an adaptive response. Prepare capture, contraception, relocation or other containment options before release. Monitoring is meaningful only if managers have authority, funding and practical means to respond.

A decision framework for proposed releases

The following questions translate IUCN’s proxy-species and translocation principles into a practical review. A proposal that cannot answer them is not ready for an open release.

1. What exactly is the benefit?

Specify the species, ecosystem process or service expected to improve, the scale of improvement and the time horizon. Explain how measurements will distinguish a real conservation effect from simply producing and maintaining animals in captivity.

2. Is the intervention suitable now?

Evaluate present and projected climate, habitat area, food availability, disease environment, predators, competitors and barriers to movement. Historical presence is evidence of past suitability, not proof of current suitability.

3. Who and what could be harmed?

Map direct and indirect effects on threatened and endemic species, local livelihoods, livestock, crops and culturally important organisms. Consider cumulative effects when the site already contains other restoration projects or invasive-species controls.

4. What alternatives address the same problem?

Compare the proxy with habitat protection, invasive-species management, conventional reintroduction of an extant relative, habitat engineering or other established conservation actions. A technically dramatic project may still be a poor choice if a lower-risk intervention can deliver the same outcome.

5. Who has rights and relevant knowledge?

Residents, Indigenous peoples, landholders and local institutions may hold rights, responsibilities and ecological knowledge relevant to the receiving landscape. IUCN policy supports participation, consent where required, transparency, equity and equitable sharing of benefits. Local impacts should be assessed before a release decision, not after conflict appears.

6. Can failure be detected and reversed?

Set a baseline, publish indicators, identify independent oversight and fund monitoring for the full period in which harm could emerge. Reversibility is not assumed: a reproducing population, hybridisation or pathogen spread may be difficult or impossible to undo.

Decision axis Question to ask Why it matters
Ecological function Which measurable process or species outcome is expected? Prevents a proxy’s existence from being mistaken for restoration.
Effects on living species Could competition, predation, browsing, hybridisation or disease affect extant species? Captures direct risks that a restoration label can obscure.
Current feasibility Do today’s climate, habitat and food resources support the intervention? Historical range alone cannot establish viability.
Population welfare and persistence Can the animals live, reproduce and remain healthy without unacceptable suffering? A short-lived or unhealthy release cannot deliver durable conservation.
Uncertainty and reversibility What is unknown, and can managers stop or reverse harm? Some ecological changes become difficult to contain after establishment.
Monitoring and governance Are baselines, triggers, authority, funding and public reporting in place? Evidence and accountability continue after release.
Opportunity cost Would the project divert money, staff or attention from effective existing actions? Resources spent on a proxy cannot be used simultaneously for other priorities.

What the evidence can—and cannot—show

IUCN reported in 2024 that a meta-analysis covered 186 studies and 665 trials of conservation interventions, examining outcomes for species, ecosystems and genetic diversity against what would have happened without intervention. Penny Langhammer, the study’s lead author and executive vice president of Re:wild, said: “What we show with this paper is that conservation is, in fact, working to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.” IUCN Director General Dr Grethel Aguilar said: “It shows that nature conservation truly works, from the species to the ecosystem levels across all continents.”

Those findings provide broad context for evaluating conservation action; they are not trials of de-extinction releases and do not establish that any particular proxy has restored an ecosystem.

IUCN’s synthetic-biology policy page notes that roughly a quarter of Earth’s species face high risk of extinction in the wild in coming decades. The quoted policy passage does not identify the underlying estimate, so the figure should be treated as policy context rather than standalone evidence that de-extinction is effective.

A recent 2025 Journal of Heredity review and IUCN policy materials emphasize that potential benefits and harms remain case-specific. Current evidence is stronger on plausible mechanisms, assessment principles and governance needs than on measured ecological outcomes from released de-extinction proxies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Governance, ethics and the meaning of “success”

IUCN’s 2016 proxy principles caution that the label “de-extinction” can imply more than the science delivers. The 2013 Version 1.0 translocation guidance similarly centers measurable conservation benefit, planning and monitoring. Together, they place ecological performance above publicity or technical novelty.

Synthetic biology is described in IUCN policy using the Convention on Biological Diversity definition: “A further development and new dimension of modern biotechnology that combines science, technology and engineering to facilitate and accelerate the understanding, design, redesign, manufacture and/or modification of genetic materials, living organisms and biological systems.” That capability does not remove duties to address habitat loss, invasive species, climate change and other causes of biodiversity decline.

Policy supports science-based, case-by-case decisions that also consider other authoritative knowledge, affected stakeholders and rights-holders, precaution, transparency and equitable sharing. It explicitly warns that synthetic biology should not replace continuing efforts to address biodiversity loss.

Bottom line: a proxy is not automatically a conservation solution

De-extinction could help living ecosystems if a carefully designed proxy restores a missing function under current conditions, survives humanely, persists without unacceptable spread and produces a documented benefit. The same project could harm native species through competition, predation, browsing, hybridisation, disease or ecosystem disruption. The responsible standard is therefore not “Can we bring it back?” but “What measurable benefit will this population provide, what could it change, and can society detect and manage the consequences?”
