Dating apps use a mix of what you tell them you want and how you respond to recommendations. Your age, location, interests, and filters can help define who is relevant; likes, skips, and matches may help personalize later suggestions. Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble each describe parts of this process, but none of the official materials cited here gives a complete formula or explains the weight assigned to each signal.
What matching algorithms use
A dating app can draw on two broad kinds of signals. Declared preferences are details and settings you provide, such as age range, gender, distance, interests, or dealbreakers. Observed activity is how you use the service: for example, profiles you like, skip, or match with. The distinction matters because your settings express what you say you want, while your activity can show how you respond to the profiles the app presents.

Companies describe using these signals to select or personalize recommendations. That does not establish that any one action controls what you see, or that an app can determine compatibility perfectly. The available disclosures do not reveal a universal formula, a precise ranking score, or the relative influence of each input.

Tinder says recommendations can use information members provide or generate through their use of the app. Its privacy FAQs name age, gender, location, interests, and Likes and Nopes as information used by its proprietary matching algorithm. Tinder’s matching explanation also discusses app use and anonymized cues from photos, including a feature called “Similar Photos.”

In its FAQ, Tinder says members can set gender, distance, and orientation preferences, and describes location-based technology showing nearby people who match those preferences. This explains the broad role of filters and location; it does not disclose how Tinder ranks eligible profiles or how much each input matters.
What Hinge says it considers
Hinge describes its recommendation system as combining multiple algorithms and using both stated preferences and app activity. It says likes and matches help it learn what a member is drawn to, so later recommendations can better reflect that member’s preferences. Its profiling explanation also names preferences, dealbreakers, likes, skips, and matches as inputs to its proprietary matching algorithm.

Hinge also describes “We Met” feedback as a way to learn about members’ dates and improve future recommendations. These are descriptions of Hinge’s own system and features, not a complete technical account of the model or evidence that feedback predicts compatibility with certainty.
What Bumble says it considers
Bumble’s privacy policy says its matching algorithms predict compatibility and show people it thinks may be a good match; it also identifies location and app activity among the data the service receives. Its Discover feature describes suggestions based on similar interests, dating goals, shared communities, and people Bumble considers a particularly good match based on profile information and past matches.

Bumble does not publish the exact weights or a full ranking formula in these descriptions. Its feature explanations identify signals the service says it uses, not a guarantee about why a particular profile appeared to you.

Why a particular person appears in your feed
A profile may fit the preferences you set, fall within a location or distance setting, or be selected using other profile and activity signals the service describes. The app’s explanations do not let a member identify the precise reason for a specific recommendation. Seeing someone is not proof that the app has inferred a particular trait or that the two of you are especially compatible.
Likewise, a like, skip, or match may contribute to later personalization where the app says it uses those actions. The disclosures do not establish that one swipe determines future recommendations, nor do they show that more time in the app necessarily improves match quality.

What you can do with this information
- Review your preferences. Check settings such as age range, distance, gender, orientation, and dealbreakers, where the app provides them. These controls express what you want considered; no specific ranking result is promised.
- Use the app naturally. Likes and skips can be among the signals some services describe, but there is no substantiated swipe ratio or usage schedule that guarantees better recommendations.
- Check privacy controls and disclosures. A description of data used for matching is not a complete account of retention periods, legal status in every jurisdiction, or every other use of data. Consult the current policy and controls for the particular service and your location.
Claims about hidden scores and algorithm hacks
Official descriptions do not substantiate popular claims that a single hidden rating, a particular swipe ratio, a precise time of day, or a paid plan reliably improves compatibility or visibility. They also do not disclose enough to calculate an individual’s ranking. Treat advice promising a guaranteed algorithm advantage skeptically unless it is backed by evidence that tests that specific claim.
