Compare China Construction Bank (CCB) with peers using the same reporting period, accounting basis, share class and price date. CCB’s latest surfaced results are for the six months ended 30 June 2026: they provide a useful baseline, but not enough to say whether CCB is a better investment than ICBC, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China or China Merchants Bank.
Start with a defined peer group
For a large state-owned bank comparison, begin with Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), Agricultural Bank of China and Bank of China. China Merchants Bank can add a different listed-bank profile. Keep the peer set consistent, and compare each bank’s own filings rather than assuming that size or a familiar name makes the businesses directly equivalent.

Compare operating performance on like-for-like terms
Earnings, growth and income mix
Put operating-income growth and net-profit growth beside absolute amounts. A bank can be much larger while growing more slowly, so scale and momentum answer different questions. Then examine NIM and, where the filings provide comparable detail, fee income and other non-interest income. NIM helps show the spread earned on interest-bearing business, but it does not explain the whole revenue mix or profitability by itself.
Rank #2
Asset quality and loss buffers
Compare NPL ratios alongside overdue and special-mention loans, write-offs, provisions and allowance coverage where definitions and dates align. An NPL ratio is not a complete measure of credit risk: classification timing and disclosure definitions can differ, and loan losses can emerge beyond loans already classified as non-performing. Avoid ranking banks from a single ratio.

Set CET1 and total capital ratios beside ROA and ROE. A higher ROE alone does not prove that a bank is safer or more valuable; it can reflect leverage as well as profitability. Check the reporting date and basis for each ratio before drawing conclusions.
Efficiency and business mix
Compare cost-to-income ratios only after checking how each bank defines the measure. Look at funding and deposit structure, lending mix, and the contribution of fees or wealth-management activity where disclosed. Differences in business mix can help explain why two banks with similar headline margins report different returns.
Separate the bank from the stock
Operating results do not tell you what an individual share is worth. For valuation, compare price-to-book and earnings multiples using a common share-price date and the same method across banks. For shareholder return, compare dividend per share and yield on the same basis. A yield can rise because a share price falls; it is not, by itself, evidence of safety or total return.
Rank #4
For CCB, specify whether the comparison uses Shanghai A-shares (601939) or Hong Kong H-shares (00939). The two listings trade in different markets and currencies, so make the share class, currency, price date, dividend basis and investor’s market access explicit. Do not use one class’s price to imply the valuation or yield of the other.

CCB’s first-half 2026 figures show its own reported position: net profit grew 5.56% year over year, NIM was 1.37%, NPL ratio was 1.29%, and total capital adequacy was 19.42%. Its 2025 full-year NIM was 1.34% and NPL ratio was 1.31%. These figures establish a starting point, not a peer ranking.
Best Value
A comparison that concludes CCB leads or trails would need the same period and comparable definitions for peer earnings, margins, asset quality, capital and returns, as well as matched valuation and dividend data for the relevant share classes. Official 2026 interim reporting is available for ICBC and Bank of China, but a consistent peer table across these measures is not established here. Without it, no claim that CCB is the best Chinese bank stock—or the weakest—follows from CCB’s results alone. ICBC investor reports and Bank of China investor reports are starting points for building a period-matched comparison.
