In a custodial crypto app or exchange account, the provider controls the keys for assets held in the hosted account. In a self-custody wallet, you control the keys and must protect the wallet’s recovery method yourself. The app’s brand alone does not tell you which model you are using: a company can offer both.
That distinction affects more than security. It changes how you sign in, authorize transactions, recover access, and decide whom you must trust. Neither model is automatically safer for every person; the right fit depends partly on whether you prefer provider-managed access or are prepared to manage your own keys and backups.

What the custody difference means
Crypto assets are controlled through private keys. A private key is what permits the holder to authorize transactions involving the assets associated with it. The practical question behind “custody” is therefore not just where an app appears on your phone, but who controls the keys and the recovery route for the wallet in question.
With a custodial service, the company maintains the keys for assets held in the service’s hosted wallet. You access the account through the company’s platform and request or initiate transactions using its service. With self-custody, the wallet gives you control of the keys, and you authorize transactions through that wallet. Control brings responsibility: you have to safeguard the keys and whatever recovery method the wallet uses.

These categories describe a relationship between a user and a particular product or wallet mode. They are not reliable labels for an entire company. Coinbase, for example, describes Coinbase.com accounts as custodial and Coinbase Wallet as self-custody. Kraken describes Kraken Exchange as custodial and Kraken Wallet as on-chain, while distinguishing seed-phrase and embedded wallet modes. The product documentation—not the familiar name on the screen—is what you need to check.
How the two models work in practice
Custodial app or exchange account
The provider holds or manages the private keys for assets in the hosted account. You sign in to the service to view and use the account, rather than directly managing those keys. The provider’s systems and policies mediate access and transactions. If you lose account access, the provider may offer account recovery or a credential reset, depending on its process and your circumstances.
This convenience also creates a dependency. The security of the hosted assets and your ability to use the account depend on the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and service availability. A custodial account is not the same as personally holding the keys simply because the balance is visible in an app or because you can request a transaction.

Self-custody wallet
A self-custody wallet gives the user control of the private keys, commonly through a recovery phrase or another wallet-specific mechanism. You use the wallet to authorize transactions, and you are responsible for protecting the keys and the backups that can restore access. Wallet designs differ: a phrase-based wallet and an embedded wallet may have different recovery and key-export details, so “self-custody” alone does not tell you exactly how recovery works.
There is no general provider account reset that can substitute for a lost self-custody recovery method. Bitcoin.org warns that permanently lost self-custodied funds cannot be recovered by a wallet provider or another party. The consequence depends on the wallet’s own documented recovery design; check that design before relying on the wallet or moving assets into it.

Custodial apps and self-custody wallets compared
| Question | Custodial app or exchange account | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | The provider controls the keys for assets in the hosted wallet. | The user controls the keys, subject to the wallet’s specific mode. |
| How do you access it? | You act through the provider’s account and service. | You use the wallet to authorize transactions with the keys it controls. |
| What if you lose access? | The provider may offer account recovery or credential reset; the process is service-specific. | Recovery depends on the wallet’s phrase, backup, or other documented recovery mechanism. |
| Where does the main responsibility sit? | You depend on the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and service availability. | You are responsible for key security, backups, and transaction decisions. |
| What should you check? | Terms, recovery process, account access restrictions, supported assets, and applicable fees. | Wallet mode, recovery and key-export design, supported assets and networks, transaction approvals, and applicable fees. |
This is a qualitative comparison, not a security score or fee ranking. Product terms and capabilities can change, and the specific service documentation should take precedence over a general description.
Recovery: what happens if you lose access?
If the account is custodial
Start with the provider’s official account-recovery instructions. A custodial service may be able to help with account access because it manages the hosted account, but that does not guarantee recovery in every case. The available steps, identity checks, account restrictions, and outcome depend on the provider’s current policies. Do not assume that a password reset resolves every type of account problem.

Also consider whether you can reach your account and transaction history if the service is unavailable or limits access. These are questions about dependence on a service, not claims that a particular provider will fail or restrict an account.
If the wallet is self-custody
Use the wallet’s documented recovery method. If that method is a recovery phrase, protecting it is part of protecting the assets: someone who obtains the phrase may be able to control the wallet, while losing it may leave you without a way to restore access. Bitcoin.org’s guidance on securing a wallet emphasizes backing up and protecting access information. Follow the wallet maker’s instructions for the exact wallet mode you use rather than assuming every wallet handles backups in the same way.
Check recovery before you need it. Confirm what information the wallet requires, where the backup is stored, and whether the wallet supports a separate key-export process. Kraken’s description of seed-phrase and embedded wallet modes is a reminder that even products presented under one wallet name may not share the same recovery path. If a recovery method is unclear, do not treat a support page for a different mode as confirmation.

Security and responsibility are a trade-off, not a simple ranking
Custody changes who bears which risks; it does not make risk disappear. In a custodial model, you rely on the provider’s safeguards and continued operation, as well as the policies that govern account access. In self-custody, you reduce that custodial dependency but take on the practical work of protecting keys and backups and approving transactions correctly. Bitcoin.org describes control of private keys as carrying responsibility for security.

Neither arrangement is categorically safer for every user. A person who cannot reliably keep a recovery method secure may find self-custody’s responsibility difficult to manage. A person who does not want access to depend on a provider may place greater value on controlling keys directly, while accepting the backup and transaction responsibilities that entails. Those are different risk allocations, not a guarantee that one option will prevent every loss.
Self-custody also does not mean that a wallet app removes the need to pay attention. The user still needs to understand the wallet’s recovery design and transaction-approval process. Conversely, a custodial account’s provider-managed keys do not mean that a user has no account-security responsibilities: access still occurs through the provider’s service and is subject to its rules.
How to identify the custody model of a specific product
- Identify the exact product and account type. Distinguish an exchange account from a separate wallet app, and note whether the wallet offers more than one mode.
- Read the product’s custody statement. Look for a clear explanation of who controls the private keys for the assets you plan to use. A brand name or the word “wallet” is not enough.
- Find the recovery documentation. Establish whether access recovery is provider-managed, phrase-based, embedded, or handled through another documented method. Check that the instructions apply to your precise product and mode.
- Check how transactions are authorized. Determine whether you initiate activity through the provider’s account or authorize it through a wallet under your key control.
- Confirm supported assets and networks. Verify that the product supports the particular assets and networks you need; support for one asset does not establish support for every network or wallet feature.
- Review fees and access terms separately. Custody type alone does not establish which product is cheaper. Check current fees, account restrictions, and service terms in the product documentation.
Coinbase’s distinction between Coinbase.com and Coinbase Wallet, and Kraken’s distinction between Kraken Exchange and Kraken Wallet, illustrate why this product-by-product check matters. These are examples of those companies’ stated product models, not a rule that every service from either company uses the same arrangement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where hardware wallets fit
A hardware wallet is a physical format that can be used for self-custody; it does not change the central question of who controls the keys. Coinbase Help identifies hardware devices alongside mobile apps and browser extensions as wallet formats, and names Ledger and Trezor as examples. That information supports understanding the category, not a recommendation of a specific device, model, price, or current availability.

- EASY ASSET MANAGEMENT: Monitor and transact seamlessly with Trezor Suite, our user-friendly desktop and mobile app
Using a physical device does not remove the need to understand and protect the recovery method or to review transaction approvals. Before choosing any self-custody format, compare its documented recovery process, supported assets and networks, and the way it asks you to authorize transactions. The format is one part of the decision; the key-control arrangement remains the defining distinction.
Choosing based on your priorities
- A custodial account may fit if you prefer account-based access and a provider’s possible recovery process, and are comfortable depending on the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and availability.
- A self-custody wallet may fit if direct control of keys is important to you and you can reliably follow the wallet’s instructions for backing up, protecting, and recovering them.
- Pause before choosing if the product does not clearly explain key control or recovery, or if you do not yet understand how you would regain access after losing a device or sign-in credentials.
Compare the concrete product features that matter to your use: recovery, account or wallet access, transaction authorization, supported assets and networks, and fees. The custody label answers who controls the keys; it does not, by itself, answer whether the product supports your assets or what using it will cost.

The product-specific examples above reflect Coinbase Help’s descriptions of Coinbase.com and Coinbase Wallet, and Kraken Support’s explanation of Kraken Exchange and Kraken Wallet. Kraken Support’s page states it was last updated September 15, 2026. General statements about private-key responsibility and permanently lost self-custodied funds draw on Bitcoin.org’s “Some things you need to know – Bitcoin” and “Securing your wallet.” MetaMask’s May 7, 2026 article, “Crypto trading explained: self-custodial vs custodial,” also contrasts user-authorized self-custody transactions with platform-managed custodial trading.
These sources establish the custody and recovery distinctions discussed here; they do not establish a universal fee comparison, a security ranking, or the exact current features of every product. Confirm current details directly in the documentation for the product and wallet mode you intend to use.
