How to find nearby Routes
Open Nearby in Pokémon GO and select the Route tab. It lists approved Routes available in the area. If you do not see any, move closer to a likely Route location and check again: the Pokémon GO Help Center says nearby Routes may not appear when you are too far away.

The official suggestion is to move around the local area and check again. The game does not promise that every Route will be visible from every spot.

Choose a Route that fits your walk
Route previews can show the path’s length, approximate completion time, how many players have followed it, and whether it is reversible or a loop. Consider those details alongside the start point and Route description. A shorter or more familiar path may be easier to finish than one that takes you somewhere inconvenient.
These details help answer different planning questions. Length gives you a sense of how much ground the Route covers; approximate time helps you decide whether it fits the time you have; and the start point tells you where you need to go before you can begin. The number of players who have followed it is another preview detail, while the loop or reverse options help you understand the available direction choices.
For example, if you are already close to a Route’s start and want a straightforward walk, compare its length and estimated time with another option before setting out. If two Routes seem otherwise similar, the one whose start and endpoint work better for your plans may be more practical. A loop or reversible Route can also be useful when its listed direction options suit the walk you intend to take. The preview provides planning information; it does not promise that a Route will produce a Zygarde Cell.

Use the mapped path to plan your walk, but keep your surroundings in mind. Choose a safe, accessible route and do not cross roads or enter restricted areas just to stay close to the in-game line.
A Route is a real-world walk represented by a creator-defined path in the game, so check both the preview and the actual surroundings. If the path or its destination is not practical for you, choose another available Route rather than trying to force the walk. You can compare Routes before starting; once you choose one, you still need to reach its physical start point in Pokémon GO.
How to start and follow a Route
- Select the Route: In Pokémon GO, open Nearby → Route and tap the Route you want to follow. Review its preview so you know the displayed length, approximate time, start point, and direction options.
- Go to its start point: Reach the physical starting location shown in the game. Campfire may help you compare Routes, but the Route must be selected in Pokémon GO and started there.
- Tap Follow: When you are close enough to the start, tap Follow. Pokémon GO records your location and Route progress as you travel.
- Stay on the creator-defined path: Follow the mapped line toward the endpoint. If you need to stop, pause and later resume through the Route menu.
- Complete the Route in the menu: After following the whole path, open the Route menu, choose Complete Route, and confirm.
Starting and completing are separate actions. Reaching the start point lets you begin; following the mapped course records progress; and the final menu action completes the Route. Walking near a Route or reaching its endpoint is not a substitute for those steps. If you have not selected and followed the Route in Pokémon GO, it will not have recorded the complete path for you.
Once you tap Follow, keep the Route map available as a guide and check that you are making progress along the displayed course. If you need a break, pause and resume from the Route menu rather than treating the interruption as completion. The Help Center’s Route instructions include pausing and resuming, so you do not have to finish in one uninterrupted stretch.

Reaching the endpoint does not always mean the Route is complete. The game may still require you to cover a remaining part of the creator-defined path. If the completion option is not available, check the map for an unfinished section and resume following the Route.
When you are confident you have followed the full path, open the Route menu and look for Complete Route. Choose it and confirm. Routes do not complete automatically, even when you have arrived at the endpoint. That final confirmation matters because it is when the game marks the Route complete and awards any Zygarde Cells discovered during it under the current update.
How Zygarde Cells are awarded on Routes
Pokémon GO’s October 2026 gameplay and quality-of-life update changed how discovered Zygarde Cells are collected: Cells found during a Route are now granted as a reward when you complete that Route. You do not need to tap a Cell on the map to collect it.
The important distinction is between discovering a Cell and receiving it. Completing the Route is the step that delivers any Cells discovered along it. Routes do not automatically complete when you reach their end, so finish the in-game completion step rather than simply walking away from the endpoint.

The update changes the collection step, not the chance of discovery. It removes the need to tap a discovered Cell on the map, but it does not turn every Route into a guaranteed Cell reward.
The Help Center’s earlier Route guidance says Routes stay open at the end so a player has a chance to collect missed Cells. The newer October 2026 update changes the collection mechanism: discovered Cells are now received as a reward on Route completion. Follow the current in-game completion flow rather than expecting to tap a Cell on the map.
A Cell is not guaranteed
The October 2026 update says the probability of finding Cells remains unchanged and that you may not find one on every Route. It gives no numerical drop rate and does not establish a daily cap. There is therefore no supported number of Routes that guarantees a Cell or a reliable daily yield.

If you complete a Route and receive no Cell, that alone does not mean you did anything wrong. The official guidance allows for Routes with no Cells; it does not promise a reward on each walk. Completing the Route grants Cells that were discovered on it, not a Cell simply for finishing.
It is also not possible to calculate a guaranteed schedule from the published guidance. Pokémon GO has not supplied an exact percentage, an official daily limit, or a promised number of Cells per Route. Be cautious of advice that presents a specific drop rate or says a fixed number of Routes will guarantee a Cell: those figures are not established by the official guidance described here.
What to do if a Route or Cell does not appear
No Routes appear in Nearby
Move closer to the area where you expect to find a Route, then reopen or recheck the Nearby → Route tab. Route visibility is proximity-sensitive, according to the Pokémon GO Help Center. Campfire can be useful for previewing nearby options, but you still need to select a Route in Pokémon GO and reach its start point to begin it.
If one check does not show a Route, try checking again after moving around the local area. Do not confuse seeing a Route in Campfire with having started it: choose the Route in Pokémon GO and go to its physical start point before tapping Follow.
You are at the endpoint but cannot complete the Route
Check the Route map for a section you have not traveled. The endpoint alone is not proof that you followed the entire creator-defined path. Resume the Route if necessary, cover the remaining path, then use the Route menu to select Complete Route and confirm.
If you paused during the walk, resume through the Route menu and use the map to see where progress remains. The key is to finish the full mapped path and then explicitly complete the Route. Do not leave just because the endpoint is nearby or because you have reached the general destination.
You completed a Route but did not get a Cell
A Cell is not guaranteed for each Route. The official update says the probability is unchanged but does not publish a percentage, so an individual Route without a Cell is consistent with the stated behavior. Completing the Route grants Cells that were discovered on it; it does not guarantee that one was discovered.

First, distinguish a missing reward from a Route that was not actually completed. If you reached the endpoint but did not use Complete Route and confirm, finish that menu step. If the Route was completed and no Cell was awarded, the published guidance still allows for that outcome because some Routes do not produce Cells. The official material does not provide a separate troubleshooting step that guarantees a Cell after an unsuccessful Route.
Does Mateo affect Zygarde Cell appearance?
No. The Pokémon GO Help Center states: “Mateo and the Route Gift Exchange do not affect Zygarde Cell appearance.” The Gift Exchange is separate from the chance of discovering a Cell while following a Route.

That means using Mateo or exchanging a Route Gift does not increase or decrease the stated Cell appearance chance. If you are following a Route for Cells, focus on completing the Route normally; Mateo is not a way to make a Cell appear, and skipping the Gift Exchange does not improve the odds.
Do you need to buy anything to find Cells?
No physical product is required to find Zygarde Cells or complete Routes. A portable phone power bank may be useful for a longer outdoor session because Pokémon GO tracks your location and Route progress while you walk, but it is optional practical equipment—not an official requirement and not something that improves Cell probability.
Choose a Route that fits the walk you can safely complete, and use the pause-and-resume option if you need to stop. Do not buy an accessory expecting it to change how often Cells appear; the official update gives no product, item, or purchase that increases the chance.

How do I start and complete a Route?
