For the Hong Kong-listed China Construction Bank H share (stock code 00939), the indicative euro value is the HKD share price divided by the number of Hong Kong dollars in one euro. If EUR/HKD rises while the Hong Kong quote is unchanged, the euro value falls; if EUR/HKD falls, it rises. Your realised return also depends on CCB’s share-price movement, dividends, taxes, spreads, custody charges and the conversion rate your broker actually applies.
Start with the quotation you actually own
China Construction Bank trades in Hong Kong as an H share under stock code 00939. Its quoted price is in Hong Kong dollars (HKD), not euros and not mainland renminbi (RMB/CNY). A euro-based investor therefore has two linked measurements: the return of the share in HKD and the change in the HKD-to-euro exchange rate.

The basic conversion is:
Euro value per share = HKD share price ÷ (HKD per EUR)
Use the share quote and the foreign-exchange rate from the same timestamp. A delayed equity quote paired with a later FX rate can produce a conversion that never existed in the market.

What a stronger or weaker euro does mechanically
When the euro strengthens
A stronger euro means one euro buys more HKD. The denominator in the conversion formula becomes larger, so an unchanged HKD share price translates into fewer euros. This is a currency loss for the euro value even though the Hong Kong quote has not moved.
When the euro weakens
If one euro buys fewer HKD, the denominator shrinks and the same HKD quote converts into more euros. That creates a currency gain for a euro investor, provided the share price itself and all other factors are unchanged.

The European Central Bank’s 16 October 2026 reference rates were EUR1 = HKD8.8316 and EUR1 = CNY7.5240. If a share were quoted at HKD8.00, the reference-rate conversion would be:
HKD8.00 ÷ 8.8316 = approximately EUR0.906 per share
This is an illustration, not a current CCB quote or an executable price. The ECB says its reference rates are published for information purposes only and strongly discourages using them for transactions. A broker’s executable EUR/HKD rate can differ because of market spreads, timing and fees.

The second and third rows isolate the FX effect: the HKD quote stays at HKD8.00 while the conversion rate changes. They are hypothetical scenarios, not forecasts of CCB’s market price.

Why the yuan still matters when the share is quoted in HKD
For an H-share holder, EUR/HKD is the direct translation rate. EUR/CNY is not a substitute for it. The 16 October 2026 CNY reference rate is useful context, but it does not convert an HKD quotation without an additional HKD/CNY relationship.
The yuan can nevertheless affect your investment through CCB’s business. The bank reports assets, liabilities, trading positions and results in multiple currencies. Changes in the renminbi can alter the value of foreign-currency assets and liabilities, the cost of hedging, capital ratios, reported earnings and investors’ valuation of the bank. Those effects can move the HKD share price, sometimes offsetting and sometimes reinforcing the direct EUR/HKD translation.
For comparison, the ECB’s reported average for 2025 was CNY8.1185 per EUR. That is a historical annual average, not a live dealing rate and not a prediction for 2026.
Two separate FX channels drive a euro return
1. Translation channel for the investor
This is the arithmetic conversion of the market quotation. If the HKD price is unchanged, the euro result moves inversely to EUR/HKD. It applies whether the currency change comes from the euro side, the Hong Kong dollar side or both.
2. Fundamental channel inside CCB
CCB states that it is exposed to exchange-rate risk primarily because of currency mismatches between assets and liabilities held in currencies other than renminbi and because of positions taken as a market maker in financial markets. The bank says it manages that exposure by matching assets and liabilities, setting limits and hedging.

These policies reduce or manage risk; they do not create a fixed relationship between a currency move and the share price. Exchange rates can influence net interest income, trading gains or losses, provisions, capital and investor risk premiums. The resulting share-price response may be positive, negative or negligible depending on the direction and size of the move and on other news affecting the bank.
What CCB’s 2025 disclosures quantify
The annual report provides dated risk measures that help define the scale of the bank’s exposure. They describe the institution’s positions, not the return a shareholder will receive.

VaR is a statistical estimate under stated assumptions. A 99% one-day figure does not mean losses cannot exceed the number, and it does not translate directly into a percentage change in the stock.
Separate share performance from currency performance
Suppose the HKD share price rises from a starting price to an ending price while EUR/HKD also changes. The cleanest analysis records both pairs of observations at synchronized times:
- Starting and ending CCB prices in HKD.
- Starting and ending EUR/HKD rates.
- Any dividend, stated in the currency in which it was paid.
- Brokerage, exchange, custody and FX-conversion charges.
- Withholding tax or other local taxes that actually apply to your account and investor status.
Ignoring dividends and costs, the exact price-only euro return is:
(Ending HKD price ÷ Ending HKD-per-EUR rate) ÷ (Starting HKD price ÷ Starting HKD-per-EUR rate) − 1

An equivalent approximation separates the two components:
(1 + HKD share return) × (1 + HKD-per-EUR translation return) − 1
For the translation term, use (Starting EUR/HKD ÷ Ending EUR/HKD) − 1. The inverse arrangement is important: a rise in HKD per EUR is negative for the euro value when the HKD quote is held constant.
Example: if the share rises 10% in HKD while EUR/HKD rises 5%, the approximate combined price return is 1.10 × (1 ÷ 1.05) − 1, or about 4.8% before dividends and costs. The share gain has not disappeared; roughly 5 percentage points of value were absorbed by the stronger euro in this illustration.
A practical measurement workflow
- Identify the instrument. Confirm that you hold the Hong Kong H share (00939), rather than an ADR, a fund, a derivative or a different CCB listing. Wrappers can have their own exchange rate, ratio, fees and trading hours.
- Capture synchronized prices. Record the HKD bid, ask or transaction price and its exact time. State which one you use; a last-traded price is not necessarily executable.
- Capture the matching FX quote. Record EUR/HKD at the same time and note whether it is a mid-market, broker, bid or ask rate.
- Convert both endpoints. Divide each HKD share price by its corresponding HKD-per-EUR rate. Comparing the two euro values automatically combines price and currency effects.
- Add distributions. Convert each dividend at the rate applicable when it was received, or use a documented total-return convention. Account for withholding tax before calling it a net return.
- Subtract real costs. Include commissions, exchange fees, custody, settlement, FX spread and any broker conversion charge. Do not treat an ECB reference rate as the rate you actually paid.
- Report the result with a date and currency convention. A statement such as “+4.8% price return in euros from 09:30 UTC on one date to 09:30 UTC on another, before tax” is reproducible; an undated euro price is not.
Dividends, taxes and trading wrappers can change the answer
Dividends
A share-price-only conversion omits cash distributions. Include the ex-dividend price adjustment and the cash dividend, then convert the dividend into euros using a stated rate. The relevant return can differ depending on whether you measure gross income, cash received after withholding or reinvested total return.

Tax and withholding
Tax depends on your residence, account type, security and the rules applied to the payment. A gross HKD dividend and a net euro receipt are different quantities. Use your broker’s tax statement or an adviser’s calculation rather than assuming that the share-price conversion answers the tax question.
ADR or other wrapper
An ADR may represent a fixed number of ordinary shares and trade in another currency. A fund or certificate can also include management fees, tracking differences and its own dealing spread. Apply the wrapper’s share ratio and terms before converting to euros; do not substitute the 00939 quote for an instrument you do not directly own.
How a euro investor compares with a Hong Kong investor

Thus, two investors can buy the same H share on the same day and report different returns without either calculation being wrong: they are using different reporting currencies and may incur different costs or taxes.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using EUR/CNY for an HKD quote
Correction: convert the 00939 quotation with EUR/HKD. Use EUR/CNY only when the instrument or cash flow is actually denominated in CNY, or when you explicitly model the intermediate HKD/CNY leg.
Pairing prices from different times
Correction: timestamp the equity and FX observations and use matching market conditions. This matters around Hong Kong market close, European market hours and dividend dates.
Treating a reference rate as executable
Correction: use the broker’s confirmed conversion rate for a transaction analysis, and label ECB rates as informational benchmarks.
Calling the entire euro result “currency performance”
Correction: show the HKD share return, translation return, dividends and costs as separate lines before combining them.
Reading VaR as a stock forecast
Correction: CCB’s VaR and net-exposure figures describe banking and trading risk at stated dates. They do not predict the percentage return of 00939.
