HUMANKIND 2 builds progression around a civilization’s changing identity rather than a mandatory culture swap at every era. You begin with a First Tale, shape a culture through tiered Customs, and decide at Crossroads whether to preserve your heritage or branch into a culture connected by history, geography, or contact. The Adaptation System then ties those choices to biomes and changing climate.
The game is still unreleased. Amplitude Studios’ current announcement plans a PC release in 2027, so the systems below describe the announced design and previewed examples, not a final rules manual.

The progression loop at a glance
Historical Mode starts on an authentic map of Earth. Your civilization’s opening circumstances establish an initial identity, and each subsequent era gives you opportunities to reinforce, modify, or redirect it. Progression is not a straight ladder in which every player takes the same culture sequence.

| Layer | What you choose | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| First Tale | A founding myth tied to your starting situation | Early bonuses, settlement direction, resources, tile behavior, and citizen roles |
| Customs | Tiered selections from a culture’s progression tree | Traits, abilities, units, districts, authority generation, resource use, and other specialization |
| Crossroads | Keep the current culture or follow a route into another one | Available Customs, city aesthetics, citizen roles, and the civilization’s future identity |
| Adaptation | Traits and abilities suited to the current biome and climate | How effectively the civilization exploits local resources and survives environmental change |
| Legacy Trait | A culminating choice in a culture’s tree | A lasting part of the civilization that can support later development |
The result is a feedback loop: geography influences culture, cultural choices help you live in that geography, and migration or climate change can make an earlier specialization less valuable.

First Tales define the opening direction
What a First Tale is
Every game begins with a First Tale: a founding myth connected to the civilization’s starting situation. It is not merely introductory text. The announced examples show First Tale effects changing resources, tile behavior, and the roles available to citizens, while also pointing your first settlements toward a particular kind of development.
The first demonstrated example is Flood Tamer, associated with Ancient Egypt. Its significance is that the opening story gives mechanical context to the starting landscape. A civilization beginning near productive water will face a different set of opportunities from one beginning in a dry, resource-poor region, even before later cultural decisions are made.
Why the starting biome matters immediately
Amplitude says every biome supplies its own resources, opportunities, and challenges. Therefore, selecting or accepting a starting location is a strategic decision rather than a visual preference. A First Tale that improves one form of terrain use can be powerful in its intended environment but less impressive if expansion takes you elsewhere.

That prevents an early specialization from being treated as a permanent promise about the entire campaign.
Customs turn a culture into a build
A progression tree for every culture
HUMANKIND 2 announces more than 70 playable cultures. Each one has its own cultural progression tree containing Customs. Amplitude describes Customs as the way players unlock bonuses, units, or even districts over time, ending in a choice of Legacy Trait.

The previewed interface presents Customs as tiered choices placed into a limited number of bonus slots. You are therefore tailoring a culture through trade-offs, not automatically collecting every benefit in its tree. A society can specialize in authority generation, water use, desert resilience, or another strategic theme, depending on the selections available and the slots you commit.
What to examine before taking a Custom
- Immediate effect: Does the Custom solve a problem you have now, such as food, water, mobility, or authority?
- Unlock type: Is it a passive bonus, a unit, a district, or an ability that changes how you play?
- Slot pressure: Because the preview shows a limited number of bonus slots, taking one option can mean giving up another.
- Environment fit: A water-focused choice may be excellent beside rivers or coasts but less useful after a move into an arid interior.
- Legacy direction: Consider whether the choices lead toward a Legacy Trait that remains valuable in the next era.
This structure gives the same named culture different possible identities. Two players can begin with the same heritage while ending with different economies, military tools, city layouts, and citizen roles because their Customs choices diverged.
Era changes are optional, not automatic
The six-era framework
Historical Mode moves through six distinct eras, from early settlements toward the Modern Age. The announcement confirms the number of eras, but their final names, turn thresholds, and detailed advancement rules have not been published.
Reaching a new era does not force a culture change. The official example keeps Ancient Egypt across two eras. You may continue playing as the Egyptians, preserving a continuous identity while developing the existing culture tree, or wait for a later opportunity to branch.
What “keeping” a culture means
Staying with one culture favors continuity. Existing Customs and the civilization’s established strengths remain the foundation, so your next decisions can deepen a plan instead of replacing it. This approach is especially attractive when your current bonuses match the terrain, your cities already use the culture’s aesthetics effectively, and the next available Legacy Trait supports your long-term strategy.

Continuity is not the same as doing nothing. You still make new Customs choices, respond to the era’s challenges, expand into different environments, and decide how much of the original specialization to retain. The benefit is a stable identity; the cost is giving up the new options that another culture might unlock.

When a culture reaches a Crossroads, the game presents three announced ways to diverge. The choices are based on your civilization’s connections rather than a universal list that ignores the map and your history.
| Route | Connection | Previewed cost | Best understood as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common history | A route tied to the culture’s historical links | Free in the hands-on preview | Continuity through a related heritage |
| Shared land | Influence from cultures occupying the same geography | Culture-point cost in the preview | A regional synthesis shaped by neighbors and territory |
| Foreign contact | A route opened through contact with another people | Higher culture-point cost in the preview | A more expensive but potentially more transformative exchange |
The relative cost pattern—free for Common history, a cost for Shared land, and a higher cost for Foreign contact—comes from a preview and may change before release. Exact numerical costs and the complete culture graph have not been published.
What changes after a Crossroads choice
A new culture changes more than the name shown on the interface. It opens additional Customs, alters city aesthetics, and adds or changes citizen roles. Those changes can affect how you design cities, assign people, use districts, and plan the next era.
Compare a route on five questions:
- Continuity or novelty: Does preserving the current identity solve your strategic needs, or do you need a different toolset?
- Cost: Can you afford the culture-point requirement, particularly for Foreign contact?
- Biome fit: Do the new Customs complement the land you occupy now?
- City identity: Will the new aesthetics and citizen roles improve the way your existing settlements function?
- Long-term flexibility: Do the incoming Customs and eventual Legacy Trait leave options open if the map changes?
The Adaptation System links culture to environment
Biome-specific development
The Adaptation System makes surroundings an active part of cultural development. Each biome offers distinct resources and hazards, and civilizations can unlock traits and abilities shaped by those conditions. In Amplitude’s example, Egyptian settlers encounter the Thule people of Greenland and can adopt sled-dog units for exploration and combat. That is an adaptation to a new environment and a new relationship, not simply a cosmetic change of faction name.

A hands-on preview of an Egyptian start in a hot, dry region gives more concrete examples: mudbricks, camel herding, and heat endurance. These examples suggest that adaptation choices can influence construction, transport, and the ability to operate in severe conditions.
Climate can invalidate an old specialty
The preview also describes climate shifting over time. A region can become more arid, humid, or cold, changing the value of earlier adaptations. In the demonstrated campaign, a later snow-covered Egypt required warmth, whaling, and resource-preservation adaptations.
This means an adaptation should be judged by its durability, not only its immediate strength. A choice that is perfect for today’s climate may become a maintenance burden after a major environmental shift. Keep enough cultural and economic flexibility to respond when the same territory no longer behaves as it did at the start.
The environment-culture feedback loop
- Your starting biome and First Tale determine early opportunities and constraints.
- Customs and Adaptations help you exploit local resources or survive local hazards.
- Exploration, migration, diplomacy, and Crossroads expose the civilization to new people and environments.
- Climate change can alter the value of the traits you selected earlier.
- You then use a later Crossroads or new adaptation to realign the culture with its changed circumstances.
In practical terms, the game asks you to treat culture as a response to place. A strong plan is not simply “choose the strongest culture”; it is “choose the culture whose tools match where this civilization is going.”

A practical decision process for each era
- Audit the map: List the dominant biomes in your settled area, the resources you rely on, and any climate trend already visible.
- Review your current Customs: Identify which bonuses, units, and districts are carrying your economy or defense, and note which slots are already committed.
- Check the Crossroads connections: Determine whether Common history, Shared land, or Foreign contact is available and what each route would add to your cities and citizen roles.
- Price the change: Reserve culture points for a route only after accounting for the previewed cost difference between the three options.
- Project the next environment: If expansion or climate change will make the current specialization weaker, favor a route or adaptation that works across more than one biome.
- Choose continuity deliberately: Staying with the current culture is a strategic choice when its Customs and prospective Legacy Trait still support your objectives, not a default option taken without comparison.
Worked example: an Egyptian campaign
Imagine beginning with the Flood Tamer First Tale. Early settlement planning would focus on the tale’s effects on resources, tiles, and citizen roles while taking advantage of the starting biome. As the culture’s tree opens, you might select Customs that strengthen water use or other needs created by the local terrain.
Best Value
If the Egyptian civilization remains in a compatible region, keeping the Egyptian identity through the next era preserves that foundation. If it shares territory with another culture, a Shared land route could offer a regional blend at the previewed culture-point cost. Contact with a distant people could open Foreign contact instead, but the preview indicates a higher cost.
Now move the story north. Meeting the Thule people in Greenland can unlock sled-dog units for exploration and combat, while a colder climate makes warmth, whaling, and resource preservation more relevant than heat endurance. The civilization is still connected to its Egyptian beginning, but its active culture has been reshaped by geography, contact, and climate.
What is confirmed, and what is still unknown
The announced design establishes the main architecture but not every rule. Treat the following as unsettled until Amplitude publishes a final manual or launch information:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The exact names and order of the six eras.
- The turn thresholds or other conditions that advance an era.
- The complete list of cultures and every node in each progression tree.
- The numerical culture-point prices for Shared land and Foreign contact.
- The balance values for Customs, Adaptations, units, districts, and Legacy Traits.
- How these systems behave in multiplayer.
- The final release date beyond the announced 2027 PC window and whether physical editions will exist.
These gaps matter because a previewed cost or example can communicate the intended direction without guaranteeing the launch balance. Build your expectations around the stable principles—optional culture evolution, culture-specific Customs, environment-driven adaptation, and meaningful Crossroads—rather than assuming that an unreleased number is final.
Release status
Amplitude Studios announced the gameplay overview on 15 October 2026, with a planned PC release in 2027 and Steam wishlisting available. The project remains unreleased, so the culture graph, era details, costs, and balance can still change before launch.
Game Director Benoit Humbert summarized the design goal this way: “With HUMANKIND 2, we want every choice to shape the identity of your civilization. Whether you evolve your culture, adapt to a new environment, build relationships, or take an unexpected path, the history you create should feel truly yours.”
