The cheapest-looking custody quote is rarely the cheapest way to hold digital assets. Compare four separate things: the recurring custody charge and minimum balance, withdrawal and network fees, what an insurance policy actually covers, and the controls that can delay or cap withdrawals.
Published figures illustrate why the comparison is not apples to apples. Gemini Custody lists a 0.4% annualized fee or $30 per month per asset, whichever is higher, plus a $125 administrative withdrawal fee. Coinbase Custody displays a 50-basis-point annualized tier with a $500,000 minimum balance, while noting that pricing depends on the use case. Those are different products, eligibility rules and contracts, not interchangeable retail rates.

What you are really comparing
Crypto custody is the service that stores private keys and authorizes transactions for you. A useful comparison separates four axes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Fee basis: a percentage of assets, a per-asset minimum, setup or administrative charges, and blockchain network fees.
- Insurance quality: the insured event, exclusions, hot- versus cold-storage coverage, policy limit, deductibles, and whether the limit is shared across customers.
- Liquidity: daily or monthly caps, rolling-window resets, asset-specific rules, address allow-list delays, approval workflows and funding holds.
- Legal and operational structure: jurisdiction, qualified-custodian or fiduciary status, segregation of assets, and who may approve a withdrawal.
A provider can be inexpensive but difficult to use in an emergency, or advertise a large insurance figure that would not reimburse your individual account. Evaluate the four axes together and against your own asset size, transaction frequency and jurisdiction.

Published custody fees and what they mean
| Provider and product | Published recurring charge | Minimum or other stated condition | Withdrawal charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini Custody | 0.4% annualized custody fee, or $30 per month per asset, whichever is higher | The $30 floor applies separately to each asset; the schedule is a custody-product fee, not a general exchange rate | $125 administrative withdrawal fee, plus the applicable blockchain network fee |
| Coinbase Custody | Displayed tier: 50 basis points (0.50%) annualized | $500,000 minimum balance; Coinbase says pricing depends on the use case and the displayed tier is institutional | Not stated in the published figures here; ask for the contract schedule and confirm network charges |
Gemini’s percentage and Coinbase’s 50 basis points look close mathematically, but the commercial terms differ. Gemini’s fee is calculated per asset with a monthly minimum. Coinbase’s displayed tier requires a $500,000 balance and is application-based. A small account holding several assets could therefore pay more under a per-asset minimum even when its total portfolio is modest; an institutional account may qualify for negotiated Coinbase pricing rather than the displayed tier.
How a per-asset minimum changes the math
At Gemini’s stated schedule, 0.4% of $5,000 is $20 per year, but the $30 monthly minimum is $360 per year for that one asset. Holding five assets at balances below the point where 0.4% exceeds $30 monthly would create five separate minimums. The minimum is not a portfolio-wide cap, so count assets, not just total value, when estimating cost.
Percentage fees versus basis points
One basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point. Fifty basis points equals 0.50% per year; 0.4% equals 40 basis points. That conversion helps compare rates, but it does not erase different minimums, eligible customers, service levels, billing periods or negotiated terms.

Ask for a complete fee schedule before transferring assets. Confirm whether it includes onboarding, account closure, in-kind transfers, trading or settlement, expedited approvals, address-book changes and tax or reporting services. Gemini’s agreement expressly says each withdrawal also incurs the applicable blockchain network fee, which varies with network conditions. A network fee is paid to the blockchain transaction system, not a fixed custody subscription, and can rise when a network is congested.
Insurance: identify the event, not the marketing number
“Insured crypto” is incomplete. The useful questions are: What event triggers payment? Which storage systems are covered? What is excluded? Is the limit shared? Who controls the claim? Does the policy protect customers directly or the custodian’s infrastructure?

Coinbase’s stated crime-insurance scope
Coinbase says its crime insurance protects a portion of digital currencies against theft, including cybersecurity breaches. It also says the policy excludes losses caused by unauthorized access resulting from compromised customer credentials and excludes non-fungible tokens. Coinbase states that digital currency is not FDIC-, NCUSIF- or SIPC-insured. Its policy statement is explicit: “Our policy does not cover any losses resulting from unauthorized access to your personal or business Coinbase account(s) due to a breach or loss of your credentials.”
That distinction matters. A theft caused by a breach of the custodian’s systems may fall within a crime policy, while a stolen password, phishing attack or other compromised customer credential may not. Do not treat the existence of a crime policy as a guarantee against every account takeover.

Gemini states that, as of March 1, 2024, it maintained $125 million in digital-asset insurance for certain losses: $25 million of hot-wallet crime insurance and $100 million of cold-storage insurance. “Certain losses” is the operative qualification. The figures describe policy capacity for specified events and storage arrangements, not a promise that every customer receives a dedicated $25 million or $100 million limit.
Why a large limit may still be insufficient
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s 2025 model-framework discussion notes that qualified-custodian insurance generally covers specified losses and that maximum coverage is generally far below assets under custody. A policy can therefore be valid yet leave a shortfall if a major incident affects many customers at once. Determine whether the limit is per account, per event, per storage wallet, or shared across the entire customer base; ask about deductibles, sub-limits, exclusions, claim control and the order in which claims are paid.
Crypto insurance is not deposit insurance
Fiat cash held at a financial institution may have a separate pass-through deposit-insurance structure, subject to the institution, account registration and applicable limits. The statements above concern digital-asset insurance. Do not infer FDIC, NCUSIF or SIPC protection for crypto from the presence of a cash balance or from the custodian’s regulated status.

Withdrawal limits: published frameworks, not universal promises
Your maximum withdrawal depends on the product, account tier, asset, country, verification status, account history and security settings. Providers can also use rolling windows rather than resetting at midnight. Always check the limit displayed in the live account immediately before a transfer.

Coinbase Prime’s configurable ceiling
Coinbase Prime documents a configurable combined crypto-and-fiat daily withdrawal limit. The available levels are $500,000, $1 million, $5 million, $10 million, $20 million, $40 million, $60 million, $80 million or $100 million per day, or unlimited. “Combined” means the crypto and fiat amounts draw from the same daily allowance under that configuration. The level assigned to an account is not necessarily the same as the maximum available in the documentation; confirm your configured value and approval requirements.
Kraken’s dynamic and rolling limits
Kraken says crypto withdrawal limits are dynamic and can change as you use the service. Verification level, country, account activity, account age and the specific asset all affect the result. Limits reset on rolling 24-hour and 30-day windows, so a withdrawal made at 3 p.m. may continue to consume capacity until 3 p.m. the following day rather than returning at midnight.
| Kraken verification level | Published crypto withdrawal allowance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Intermediate | $500,000 daily and $15 million monthly | Subject to account conditions, asset rules and the rolling-window framework |
| Pro | $10 million or more daily and unlimited monthly | Subject to account conditions; “or more” is not a fixed universal ceiling |
The table shows a published framework, not a guaranteed amount for every account. A specific asset, jurisdiction or risk review can produce a lower live limit.
Why a withdrawal can be held or refused
A limit and a hold are different. A limit caps how much you may send in a time window; a hold temporarily prevents funds or a destination from being used even when you are below the cap.

Funding-method security holds
Kraken documents holds of up to 72 hours for some card or digital-wallet purchases and seven days for ACH Plaid purchases. The hold is tied to the funding method and is designed to prevent immediate withdrawal of newly purchased assets. Selling or converting during a hold may not remove the restriction.
New-address and password-change delays
Kraken also documents a delay of up to 24 hours for new withdrawal addresses after a password change. Address allow-listing and a cooling-off period can reduce the damage from a stolen session, but they require operational planning: add and verify a destination before an urgent transfer, and make sure more than one authorized operator can complete the approval process.
Legal and compliance refusals
Gemini’s custody agreement says a withdrawal may be refused where required by law or regulation. Similar compliance reviews can involve identity checks, sanctions screening, suspicious-activity investigation or a mismatch between the account’s approved purpose and the requested destination. A published numerical limit does not override a legal hold.
Network congestion and transaction processing
Even after a custodian approves a request, blockchain confirmation time and network fees vary with network conditions. The provider may queue, batch or fee-adjust a transaction according to its operational policy. Treat the custody approval time and the on-chain settlement time as separate milestones.
Operational and legal questions to ask a custodian
Fee and insurance tables are only part of the risk. Before signing, obtain written answers to these questions:
Best Value
- Where are the assets and keys held? Ask which assets use hot wallets, cold storage or a combination, and how transfers between them are authorized.
- Are customer assets segregated? Confirm whether records identify your assets separately from the custodian’s own holdings and how segregation works in an insolvency.
- Who is the legal custodian? Determine the jurisdiction, entity name, licensing status and whether the service is acting as a qualified custodian or fiduciary for your account type.
- Who can authorize a withdrawal? Clarify single- versus multi-approver workflows, role-based permissions, quorum rules and emergency procedures.
- What happens if the custodian fails? Read the agreement for insolvency treatment, transfer rights, termination notice and the process for retrieving assets.
- Which assets and regions are eligible? Supported assets, onboarding rules and insurance terms can vary by country and product.
Regulatory status can improve governance, but it does not turn digital assets into deposit-insured money or remove market, technology and policy risks.
Retail, institutional and self-directed fit
| Reader profile | What matters most | Likely friction |
|---|---|---|
| Retail holder with a small, diversified balance | No per-asset minimum that overwhelms the portfolio; transparent network charges; practical address controls | Institutional minimums and a $30-per-asset floor can make a formal custody product uneconomic |
| High-net-worth individual or family office | Cold-storage policy, shared-limit wording, withdrawal approvals and recovery procedures | Large insurance figures may still be pooled and below total exposure |
| Fund, company or treasury team | Qualified-custodian structure, segregation, role-based approvals, configurable limits and reporting | Onboarding, minimum balances, jurisdiction and use-case underwriting can determine the actual price |
| Trader or treasury desk needing rapid liquidity | Rolling-window math, address pre-approval, funding-hold rules and escalation contacts | Security holds can block a legitimate urgent transfer even when the account is fully funded |
Do not select a product solely because its annual percentage is lower. A service that cannot deliver within your required settlement window may cost more through missed obligations, forced borrowing or operational downtime.
A practical comparison method
- Define the exposure. List each asset, approximate balance, expected holding period and whether it will sit in hot or cold storage.
- Normalize the fee. Convert basis points to a percentage, apply per-asset minimums, and add recurring account or administrative charges. Model at least one low-balance and one high-balance case.
- Map every withdrawal cost. Record administrative fees, blockchain network fees, fiat-transfer charges and any expedited or address-change fees.
- Read the insurance wording. Write down covered events, exclusions, storage type, deductible, policy limit, whether the limit is pooled, and who files the claim.
- Test liquidity against your schedule. Compare the live daily cap with your largest expected transfer, then account for rolling 24-hour and 30-day windows.
- Build in holds. Add card, digital-wallet and ACH waiting periods, password-change delays, new-address cooling-off periods and possible compliance reviews.
- Verify the contract. Confirm jurisdiction, segregation, qualified-custodian or fiduciary status, supported assets and termination or insolvency procedures.
- Recheck before funding. Pricing, limits, supported assets and insurance arrangements can change. Save the current agreement and the account’s displayed limit at onboarding.
Worked decision examples
Small portfolio spread across several assets
Suppose a holder has five assets, each below the balance at which 0.4% exceeds $30 per month. Gemini’s stated minimum would be $30 per asset per month, or $150 monthly before network fees and any other charges. A percentage-only quote could appear cheaper, but the per-asset floor changes the result. The correct comparison is the total annual bill for the actual asset list, not the headline percentage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstitutional balance above the displayed minimum
An organization with at least $500,000 may be eligible for Coinbase Custody’s displayed 50-basis-point tier, but Coinbase says pricing depends on the use case. The organization should request the written quote, confirm whether the fee applies to all supported assets, and compare approval, reporting and withdrawal terms rather than assuming the displayed rate is final.
Urgent transfer after a password reset
A user who changes a Kraken password and immediately adds a destination may face the documented up-to-24-hour new-address hold. If the funds were also purchased through ACH Plaid, the seven-day funding hold could be the longer restriction. Planning the destination and funding method in advance is more reliable than trying to bypass a security control during an emergency.
Checklist before moving assets
- Have you calculated recurring fees per asset and applied every minimum?
- Did you separate custody, administrative and blockchain network charges?
- Can you name the exact insured event and every major exclusion?
- Is the insurance limit per account, per event or shared, and who controls claims?
- Which assets use hot storage and which use cold storage?
- What is your account’s live daily limit, and does it reset on a rolling window?
- Are crypto and fiat withdrawals combined under one allowance?
- How long do your funding method, password changes and new addresses remain on hold?
- What approvals, roles and emergency contacts are required?
- What happens to segregated assets if the custodian becomes insolvent or the agreement ends?
- Are the service, asset and insurance terms available in your country and for your account type?
Use the provider’s current agreement and live account display for the final decision. Published examples establish how the products are structured, but they cannot reveal the exact limit, negotiated price or eligibility outcome for your account.
