Cross-progression is the result players care about: the same campaign, character, inventory, or unlocks is available when they change devices. In most games, you must link every platform profile to one publisher account, upload a current save, then sign in with that same publisher identity on the destination platform.
That system does not automatically include cross-play, cross-buy, or downloadable-content transfers. Each RPG sets its own supported platforms, account rules, purchase entitlements, and restrictions.

What cross-save and cross-progression actually mean
Cross-save is the technical mechanism. The game stores a save file or account state in cloud storage operated by the publisher or an associated service, then retrieves it on another installation. Depending on the title, that state may be a traditional campaign save, a character roster, or a persistent online account containing items and unlocks.
Cross-progression describes the player-facing outcome. You can begin on one platform and continue the same journey on another without starting over. The terms are often used interchangeably in store pages and support articles, but they are not a universal standard. A publisher can implement a complete account-based service, a limited cloud-save feature, or no transfer at all.

The publisher account is usually the identity that matters. A PlayStation Network, Xbox, Steam, Epic, Apple, or Google profile may be linked to that account, but simply using the same console owner or email address does not prove that two installations share progress. If the game asks you to connect a publisher account, use the same one on every platform.
How a typical cross-save transfer works
The exact menu names vary, but the sequence below matches the common implementation used by major open-world RPGs.
- Update the game on both devices. Cross-progression features are commonly added or changed in a specific game update. An outdated installation may hide the option or fail to read a newer save.
- Identify the account that owns the progress. Check the game’s account or services menu on the platform where your latest character or campaign exists. Confirm the displayed publisher account before linking anything.
- Link each platform profile to that same publisher account. Do not create a second publisher account for the destination device. If a platform is already linked to a different account, follow the game’s unlink procedure before proceeding; some services impose long lockouts.
- Create or activate a current save. In a traditional RPG, make a new manual save after linking. In a persistent online RPG, sign in and allow the service to synchronize. This gives the cloud a recent state to retrieve.
- Wait for the upload to finish. Look for a cloud icon, synchronization message, or confirmation in the save screen. Closing the game during an upload can leave the destination with an older save.
- Install and launch the game on the destination platform. Sign in to the same publisher account, not merely the same console or PC user profile.
- Open the game’s Load Game, Continue, or account-selection screen. Choose the uploaded cross-progression or cloud save. Some titles import the account automatically; others require an explicit selection.
- Verify the result before making new progress. Check the character level, quest position, inventory, currencies, and settings. If anything is missing, stop playing on the destination device until you resolve the account or synchronization issue.
CD PROJEKT RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 support instructions describe this pattern explicitly: the latest Quick, Auto, Manual, and other saves are uploaded automatically after cross progression is enabled, then become available after the same CD PROJEKT RED account is linked on another platform.
What you need before switching platforms
- A supported edition and platform combination. Cross-progression is decided by the individual game. A feature on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox does not imply support for every other device family.
- A publisher or service account. This account is the durable identity for the save or character. Keep its email, password, and two-factor authentication details available.
- An up-to-date installation. The source and destination versions must support the same transfer feature. Major-generation or edition differences can have separate rules.
- A completed synchronization. The source device must finish uploading before you rely on the destination copy.
- Purchase and DLC information. A transferred save may reference expansions or items that are not licensed on the second platform. Check the title’s store and downloadable-content policy before buying.
How major open-world RPGs implement it
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The official support flow presents cross-platform progression for this open-world RPG. Start with an updated game, link the platform profile to a CD PROJEKT RED account, and create a new save so it uploads to the cloud. On the destination platform, connect the same account and select the uploaded save from Load Game.
The important detail is the newly created save. Merely linking an account does not make every old local file appear instantly; the game needs a save that has passed through its cloud service. Edition and platform combinations can have their own compatibility limits, so verify those details in the current support instructions for your copy.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 uses the same account-and-cloud model. Enable cross progression, create a save, and wait until the cloud indicator confirms the upload. Connect the same CD PROJEKT RED account on the second platform, then load that uploaded file.
CD PROJEKT RED describes the benefit as being able to “pick up where you left off on other platforms.” That wording refers to saves, not to a promise that every purchase or expansion entitlement follows the account.

Genshin Impact uses a persistent HoYoverse Account. A HoYoverse help article dated September 9, 2025 lists cross-save support across PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation, and Xbox. Players sign in on the other device with the same HoYoverse Account credentials or with the same linked third-party account.

Because progress is attached to the service account, the transfer can include progress, items, and currency. The login method still matters: two accounts that happen to use the same email address are not necessarily the same HoYoverse identity if they were created through different sign-in paths.
Destiny 2: a useful contrast
Bungie calls its system Cross Save. You select one active Destiny 2 account and character set, then access those characters on connected platforms. Gear, weapons, and loot earned on one platform can be used wherever you play under that active account.
Cross Save is separate from Cross Play. Bungie’s official guide states, “Cross Save and Cross Play are two separate processes.” Cross Save determines which characters and progression follow you; Cross Play determines whether players on different platforms can join the same multiplayer activities. One can exist without the other.
Cross-save, cross-progression, cross-play, and cross-buy compared
| Feature | What it controls | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-save | Uploading and retrieving a save or account state on another platform | Access to the game license, expansions, or multiplayer sessions |
| Cross-progression | Continuing the same campaign, character, inventory, or unlocks elsewhere | That every local save, item, currency, or purchase transfers |
| Cross-play | Playing in the same multiplayer session with people on other platforms | That your character or campaign can move between platforms |
| Cross-buy | One purchase granting licenses for multiple platform stores | Cloud synchronization or shared progression |
These features are independent. A title may let you carry a character to a second platform while requiring a second game purchase. Another may offer cross-play but keep campaign saves tied to each platform. Treat every promise as a separate checkbox in the game’s current support documentation.
Do you need to buy the game or DLC twice?
Cross-save documentation explains how identity and progress move; it does not, by itself, create a universal license. Console and PC storefronts generally maintain separate entitlements, and the cited support instructions do not promise that one purchase grants every platform edition.
Downloadable content requires the same caution. A save can contain a character wearing expansion gear or standing in an expansion area, yet the destination platform may require its own DLC license. Some services share certain currencies or items while excluding others. Before purchasing a second copy, check three separate policies for the exact game and edition:
- Whether the base game license is shared across your intended platforms.
- Whether expansions and season passes are shared or must be purchased again.
- Whether consumable currency, premium items, and marketplace purchases are account-bound or platform-bound.
Why a save may not appear
The wrong account is linked
This is the most common cause. Return to the source platform and record the exact publisher account shown in the game’s account menu. Sign out on the destination, then sign in with that identity. Do not unlink accounts repeatedly while guessing; some services treat a link as a permanent or time-limited choice.
The save never uploaded
Make a fresh manual save after enabling the feature and remain online until the cloud icon or synchronization message appears. An older local save can remain invisible if it was created before account linking or while the service was offline.

The game or platform is unsupported
Check the title’s supported-device list rather than relying on the presence of a console backup or generic cloud-save service. A Square Enix support answer for one referenced game states that it has no cross-save across different platforms, demonstrating why cloud storage on the device is not evidence of publisher-level progression.
The edition or content differs
Confirm that the destination installation is the compatible game, generation, and edition. If the save loads but an area, item, or currency is absent, compare DLC ownership and platform-specific restrictions before assuming the save is corrupted.
A newer destination save overwrote the expected state
Cloud systems can present more than one save or synchronize the most recent state. Stop creating new saves until you know which copy is authoritative. Preserve the source device’s latest manual save when the game permits it, then follow the title’s conflict-resolution instructions.
Account-linking hazards and recovery
Choose the intended publisher account before activating a service. Bungie documents a particularly important warning for Destiny 2: after selecting the wrong linked account, a player may need to disable Cross Save, correct the account links, and wait 90 days before re-enabling it. That cooldown can make an error effectively irreversible for a season of play.
Use a simple preflight checklist:
- Write down the publisher account email or sign-in method that owns the characters.
- Confirm every platform profile you intend to connect.
- Check which character set will become active if the service asks you to choose one.
- Enable two-factor authentication and save recovery codes.
- Take screenshots of account-link and character-selection screens before confirming.
How to evaluate an open-world RPG before buying
Do not stop at a “cross-save available” label. Compare the implementation on the dimensions that affect your play pattern.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which exact platforms and device generations are supported? | Support may cover PC, mobile, PlayStation, or Xbox in different combinations. |
| Is progress a campaign save or a persistent service account? | Account-based games usually synchronize characters and inventories; campaign games may require an explicit uploaded save. |
| Which publisher account is required? | Your platform profile is not always the identity that carries progress. |
| Do items, currency, DLC, and purchases transfer? | Cross-progression does not establish cross-buy or shared entitlements. |
| Is cross-play offered separately? | You may carry a character without joining friends on other platforms. |
| How are conflicts and overwrites handled? | Knowing which save is authoritative prevents accidental loss. |
| Are unlinking and account changes restricted? | Cooldowns such as Bungie’s documented 90-day wait can block corrections. |
A practical switching routine
For a low-risk move, finish a session on the source platform, create a clearly named manual save, wait for synchronization, and record the publisher account. On the destination, sign in before launching into a new game, load the transferred state, and inspect the character and inventory. Only after that verification should you resume normal play or delete local copies.
If you regularly alternate platforms, repeat the same discipline each time: finish at a stable checkpoint, allow the cloud operation to complete, and avoid playing simultaneously on two devices unless the game’s support page explicitly explains how conflicts are resolved. The cloud is an account service, not a guaranteed real-time mirror.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe key distinction to remember
Cross-save is the delivery mechanism; cross-progression is the continuation you experience. Both depend on the individual game’s account architecture. The safest assumption is that the same publisher account is required, a current save must be uploaded, platform support is limited to a documented matrix, and cross-play, cross-buy, and DLC transfer must each be verified separately.
