The game has to connect their platform identities to a shared way to find, invite, and group players, then check that each player can join that session. The exact platforms, account requirements, and features vary by game: crossplay does not automatically include every platform pairing, shared saves, or shared purchases.
What cross-platform multiplayer means
Crossplay, or cross-platform multiplayer, means people using different supported platforms can play together in the same game’s multiplayer environment. A game being available on PC and consoles does not by itself mean its players can join one another.

Epic Games’ July 14, 2025 explanation describes crossplay as multiplayer across major consoles, mobile devices, and PCs on the same server. That is a publisher’s explanatory definition, not a universal technical standard; the specific game’s support list determines which versions and platform pairings work. Epic Games’ crossplay overview
How players get into the same co-op session
At a high level, platforms authenticate players, and the game or its connected services make those identities usable for social features and compatible lobbies or sessions. Players can then find one another, accept an invitation, or meet through matchmaking. Before a connection is allowed, the game checks whether the players can join that session.

This is a conceptual flow, not a claim that every game uses the same backend or network architecture. For example, Epic Online Services documents an integration using Epic Account Services and its EOS SDK, with social features such as friends and invites alongside session features. Other games may build or integrate different systems. Epic Online Services’ Crossplay Technical Overview · Epic Online Services FAQ
Finding and inviting friends
A game may use platform friend lists, an in-game account, a cross-platform social layer, or a combination. Cross-platform friends may need to add one another through the game rather than through their console or PC platform’s friend system. Follow the game’s own instructions for account linking, finding a player, and sending an invite.

Matchmaking and private parties
Matchmaking and joining a private co-op party are related but distinct routes into multiplayer. Matchmaking looks for a suitable session; a private party or lobby lets players bring specific friends together. A game can support one, both, or neither across a particular platform pairing.
Rocket League illustrates why checking the individual game matters: its support page says players on Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam can matchmake together in online match types, and friends on different platforms can also play private matches. Compatibility checks and restrictions
A service may help identify platform membership and enforce lobby or session eligibility, but the game also needs to verify compatibility when players connect. Epic Online Services’ Crossplay Restrictions documentation says, “Your game should always add additional validation or enforcement on the host or server when players connect, to make sure they are crossplay compatible.” This is why a game’s compatibility rules—not simply the fact that two platforms are online—determine who can play together. Epic Online Services’ Crossplay Restrictions
Crossplay is not cross-save or shared purchases
Crossplay concerns who can play together. Cross-save or cross-progression is a separate feature that carries a save file or character progress between platforms. Shared purchases and entitlements are separate too, and the rules depend on the game. A title may offer crossplay without cross-save, or support both with game-specific limits. Why crossplay may not work for every player
Crossplay can be limited by the game’s supported platform pairings, version compatibility, account or friend setup, and session rules. Players may also be excluded from cross-platform sessions by a game-level setting, a platform-level opt-out, or technical or business constraints. Turning crossplay off can narrow the pool of players available for matchmaking.

- Your goal: try to collect as few points as possible over several rounds of play as quickly as possible by skilfully uncovering, exchanging and collecting playing cards, as few points as possible. But this can only be done as long as a player has not revealed all their cards, otherwise the round of game ends. So be careful, keep an eye on the game and the players

Before trying co-op with a friend on another platform
- Confirm the supported pairing. Check the game’s official crossplay list for both platforms and the mode you want to play.
- Check compatibility. Make sure both players have a compatible game version and meet any requirements the game specifies.
- Use the game’s friend and invite process. Follow its instructions for adding accounts, linking accounts if needed, and inviting or joining a friend.
- Check crossplay controls if it fails. Look for a crossplay setting in the game and any relevant platform-level opt-out setting; the exact labels and steps vary.
- Choose the right route into a session. Try the game’s supported private-party or matchmaking option, as appropriate.
These are general checks, not universal menu instructions. For a concrete example, Rocket League’s support page confirms cross-platform matchmaking and private matches for the platforms it lists, but other games can handle parties and invites differently. Rocket League support
How to evaluate crossplay in a co-op game
Before buying or inviting friends, look up the specific game’s current official support information and verify the details that affect your group:
- Which platform pairings are supported?
- Does crossplay apply to co-op, matchmaking, private parties, or only certain modes?
- Do players need game accounts, linked accounts, or in-game friend IDs?
- Is cross-save or cross-progression supported separately, and are there limits on progress or purchases?
- Can crossplay be disabled, and does doing so affect matchmaking?
These features are independent enough that the word “crossplay” alone does not answer all of them. The game’s own support page is the best place to confirm its current rules. Epic Games’ overview of crossplay and cross-save
