Set up equipment control only for devices you want the Cube to operate, and decide whether hands-free voice control is worth keeping enabled.
1. Confirm the HDMI connection, TV input, and network
Connect the television to the Cube’s HDMI OUT port, then select that same HDMI input on the TV. Amazon’s U.S. setup guide says a high-speed HDMI cable is required and is not included. Complete the on-screen Wi-Fi and Amazon account setup; if either step fails, use Amazon’s Fire TV Cube setup and troubleshooting guidance.
2. Place the Cube where its microphones can hear you
For dependable hands-free voice pickup, keep the Cube in the open rather than inside a closed cabinet, and place it at least 1 ft (30 cm) from speakers, as Amazon’s setup instructions specify. Amazon’s guidance is direct: “Don’t place the Fire TV Cube in a closed cabinet as it needs to hear your voice.” See How to Set Up Fire TV Cube.
If the Cube must sit away from equipment stored in a cabinet, an IR extender sold separately may help it control that equipment; Amazon advises placing the extender on the same shelf as the components. It does not solve obstructed voice pickup, so keep the Cube itself unobstructed if you want to use hands-free Alexa.

3. Check picture and sound for your particular setup
Open Settings > Display & Sounds to review options including video resolution, audio output, screensaver, display mirroring, and HDMI CEC. There is no single resolution, audio format, or HDMI CEC choice established as best for every TV and audio chain. Choose options supported by the connected display and audio equipment, then test playback. Fire TV menus and available controls can vary by device and software version; Amazon notes that the Fire TV experience differs across some devices. Its Fire TV home-screen guide describes the settings organization.
Video resolution
If the current picture is stable, there is no need to change resolution just to optimize a working setup. If you do change it, choose a resolution supported by the TV and check that the picture remains stable across the content you watch. The cited Amazon pages list resolution as a control but do not prescribe a universal value.

Audio output
Choose the output that matches where sound should play—such as the TV, a compatible soundbar, or an A/V receiver—and confirm that each device in the connection path supports the selected audio format. Check sound during playback rather than assuming the Cube, TV, and receiver will negotiate every format identically.
HDMI CEC
Review HDMI CEC when you want connected devices to coordinate control through HDMI. Whether it should be on or off depends on the TV and other equipment; Amazon’s overview identifies the setting but does not specify one ideal state for all installations.

4. Set up Equipment Control only for devices you want to operate
For compatible TVs, soundbars, and A/V receivers, look under Settings > Equipment Control to add or manage equipment. The Cube may also ask about equipment control during initial setup. Support depends on the device and configuration, so do not assume every brand or provider will work. Amazon’s third-party device instructions explain supported equipment control.
If a set-top box is connected to HDMI IN
Amazon’s separate instructions apply specifically to Fire TV Cube (3rd Generation) and are published for the U.K. For that setup, configure the box from Inputs. The procedure requires line of sight and a high-speed HDMI cable rated at 18 Gbps or higher. If setup fails, Amazon says HDMI control on the set-top box may need to be disabled. Consult the model-specific set-top-box control instructions; do not assume this workflow applies to every Cube generation or region.

5. Choose whether to keep the microphones enabled
Press the physical microphone mute button on the Cube to turn off hands-free voice control; the button lights red. Muting trades voice convenience for privacy. Amazon says the blue indicator light shows when Alexa is recording and sending a request to Amazon’s secure cloud. You can access, hear, and delete voice recordings in the Alexa app; Amazon also documents voice requests to delete the last request or all recordings. The Alexa on Fire TV Cube help page explains the voice controls. The remote’s voice button is separate and cannot perform voice navigation or make on-screen selections.
6. Change other preferences only when they address a need
Amazon groups additional controls under Preferences, My Fire TV or Device & Software, and Accessibility. Menu names may vary with device and software version. Use this quick guide to decide what merits attention:

- Household limits: review parental controls if you want to restrict access or purchases.
- Privacy and interruptions: check privacy and notification preferences if you want to change how information or alerts are handled.
- Language and time: adjust these if menus, content presentation, or time settings do not match your needs.
- Accessibility: review screen reader, high-contrast text, captions, and other options for the people using the TV.
- Device maintenance: use update, storage, restart, or sleep controls when needed. Reserve factory reset for troubleshooting or preparing the Cube for someone else, since it resets the device rather than fine-tuning a first-run preference.
