How Cross-Chain Intent Protocols Route Swaps—and Handle Failures

Cross-chain intents let solvers choose how to deliver the outcome a user signs for. Routing, verification and failure recovery depend on each protocol’s rules—not on ERC-7683 alone.

Cross-chain intent protocols let you specify the result you want—such as receiving one asset on a different blockchain—without choosing every bridge, pool or intermediate transaction. Solvers, also called fillers, decide whether and how to complete the order; a settlement system checks the destination result and determines when the solver is paid. If an order is unfilled or its destination result cannot be verified, what happens next depends on that protocol’s deadlines, custody design and verification rules. ERC-7683 standardizes a way to describe orders to solvers, not a universal route or refund guarantee.

How do cross-chain intent protocols route swaps?

A conventional swap flow exposes a route for the user or application to select. An intent instead describes an outcome and its constraints. The solver chooses an execution strategy that satisfies those constraints, if it can do so economically and before the order expires.

  1. The user specifies the outcome. The order can set a desired destination asset or output, an expiry or deadline, and protocol-specific execution details. The exact fields and meaning depend on the protocol.
  2. The order is created and shared. In the lifecycle described by ERC-7683, an application creates an order and submits it to an order feed. A resolver translates protocol-specific order data into a general representation so solvers can inspect its steps, payments and assumptions. This does not require every protocol to use the same feed or execution flow.
  3. Solvers decide whether to fill. Solvers assess whether they can meet the order’s conditions. They may use assets they already hold or source liquidity from other venues. In UniswapX, signed orders are broadcast and fillers compete to satisfy them; their precise filling strategy is not prescribed.
  4. The destination result is delivered. In the cross-chain design described in the UniswapX whitepaper, the filler transfers the requested assets through a destination reactor, which records whether the order was filled before its deadline.
  5. The result is verified and settlement follows. In that whitepaper example, a settlement oracle relays confirmation to the origin-chain reactor. The origin assets and the filler’s bond are then released to the filler. Other protocols can use different verification and custody designs.

The key distinction is between execution—delivering the destination output—and settlement—checking that delivery under the protocol’s rules and finalizing payment. A solver may choose a route, but it cannot unilaterally define what counts as a valid fill.

What determines which route a solver uses?

There is no single routing algorithm shared by all intent protocols. The available route depends on the signed order, the solver market and the protocol’s settlement rules.

  • Order constraints: The required output, expiry and other conditions limit which fills are acceptable.
  • Liquidity and solver strategy: A solver may use its own inventory or find liquidity in external venues. Competition can influence whether a solver chooses to fill, but does not guarantee that one will.
  • Chain, asset and market conditions: Support for the relevant chains and assets, available liquidity and current market conditions affect whether a route is viable.
  • Protocol rules: Auction rules, execution ordering and settlement requirements shape which strategies solvers can use.

Uniswap’s API documentation distinguishes AMM routes, which use on-chain liquidity, from UniswapX routes filled by third-party solvers. For that API, a UniswapX route may be unavailable if solvers cannot or choose not to fill. An AMM route can serve as a fallback when the request permits it; solver activity also varies by chain. Route availability is therefore not a promise that every requested cross-chain intent will be filled.

What happens if a cross-chain swap fails?

“Failed” can describe different events, and they may have different recovery paths. Check the order’s expiry, the relevant proof or verification deadline, and the protocol’s documented settlement rules rather than assuming every failure triggers an immediate refund.

Situation What it means What recovery depends on
No solver fills the order No solver accepts or completes the order under its constraints. The order’s expiry and the protocol’s cancellation, escrow and refund rules. An unfilled order does not, by itself, establish what happens to funds in every protocol.
The destination fill misses its deadline The solver does not deliver the required output within the relevant time limit. The protocol’s deadline and settlement design. In the UniswapX whitepaper example below, missing the proof deadline results in a return of the input assets and the filler bond to the user.
The fill is made, but verification is delayed or challenged The destination action may have happened, but the settlement system has not yet accepted proof of it. The protocol’s verification system, challenge rules and timing. The ERC-7683 standard does not set one universal resolution or payout rule for this case.

UniswapX’s whitepaper example

The UniswapX whitepaper describes a specific cross-chain design using an origin-chain reactor, a filler bond, a destination-chain fill and a proof deadline. If the filler completes the destination fill and proof is relayed, the origin assets and bond are released to the filler. If the filler does not execute the order before the proof deadline, the user receives the input assets and the filler bond from the origin reactor. This is an example of one design, not a general rule for all intent protocols.

How to read the general “failed swaps cost nothing” statement

UniswapX’s overview states that failed swaps cost the user nothing. For a cross-chain order, that product-level statement should not substitute for checking the specific order’s deadlines and verification mechanism. The whitepaper’s cross-chain flow explains one such mechanism; it does not establish that other protocols, or every cross-chain design, have the same refund behavior.

What ERC-7683 does—and does not—standardize

ERC-7683 provides a solver-facing representation for orders so protocol-specific order information can be exposed in a more general form. It deliberately leaves important implementation choices open, including order authorization, settlement verification and execution order. Systems may use escrow before a fill or a fill-first design with a resource lock.

“This ERC standardizes how a protocol describes an order to solvers; it does not standardize or guarantee the security of the protocol that ultimately settles the order.” — ERC-7683, Ethereum Improvement Proposals.

That boundary matters: a shared order format does not make settlement contracts, assets, resolver implementations or off-chain and cross-chain systems equally safe. Assess those components and their assumptions separately.

How to evaluate a protocol’s routing and recovery rules

Before signing an order or integrating a protocol, look for answers to these questions in its documentation and the order itself:

  • Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
  • Order constraints: What destination output, price floor, expiry or other conditions are actually signed?
  • Solver access: How are orders distributed and matched? Who is permitted to fill, and may solvers use their own inventory or external venues?
  • Custody and execution order: Are funds escrowed before the destination fill, or does a resource lock support fill-first execution?
  • Verification: What establishes that the destination result occurred? Which oracle, messaging system or other verification mechanism is involved, and what assumptions does it introduce?
  • Failure cases: What happens with no fill, a late fill, missing proof or a challenged result? What can be returned, and when?
  • Availability and fallback: Are the required chains and assets supported? If no solver route is available, does the application offer another route, and is that behavior enabled for this request?

For builders using Uniswap’s API, route selection and fallback behavior depend on request configuration and live solver availability. Consult the current API documentation for its active parameters; route-inclusion thresholds are implementation details and can change. The documentation does not establish market-wide failure rates, completion times or solver concentration, so those figures should not be inferred from an individual product’s routing behavior.
