The VCT is the full Tier 1 competition system; league play is one regional regular-season phase within it. In 2026, teams play group matches in each International League, then pursue playoffs and qualification to global events. Riot has announced that regular-season league play will be replaced by tournament Cups in 2027, so that future plan should not be confused with the 2026 format.

What the 2026 VCT season includes
Riot describes the VCT as Tier 1 competition across four territories, with 48 teams in total. The 2026 handbook lists regional Kickoff, Masters Santiago, regional Stage 1, Masters London, regional Stage 2, and Champions Shanghai. League play is therefore one segment in a season that also includes international events and the year-ending championship.

Stage 1: group round robin and playoffs
Each International League’s 12 teams are divided into two groups of six. Teams play a single round robin within their group: five best-of-three matches per team over five weeks. The top four teams in each group advance to Stage 1 Playoffs; the bottom two are eliminated.

Stage 1 match wins award Championship Points. The top three playoff finishers qualify for Masters London.
Stage 2: groups, Play-Ins, and playoffs
The 12 International League teams are split into two groups of six again, with groups reshuffled from Stage 1. Each team plays five group matches. The top two in each group qualify directly for the eight-team playoffs.

The other eight International League teams enter double-elimination Play-Ins alongside the top four Challengers teams. Four teams advance from Play-Ins to join the four direct qualifiers in playoffs. The top two Stage 2 playoff teams and the two highest Championship Point earners qualify for Champions Shanghai.
Where Challengers fits
Challengers is a distinct competition route toward the higher tier, not another name for International League regular-season play. In the North American example, Riot’s ACE VALORANT Challengers NA 2026 announcement describes three stages, each with a 16-team Swiss stage and top-eight double-elimination playoffs. Swiss matches are best-of-three; lower finals and grand finals are best-of-five. Promotion and relegation occur after Stages 1 and 2, and the announcement describes a route toward VCT Americas Stage 2 through Challengers performance and a regional Last Chance Qualifier. Those details are specific to the cited North American format, not a universal description of every region.

What changes in 2027
Riot announced on April 8, 2026 that the VCT will shift to an all-tournament model in 2027. Open qualifiers will feed two Cups per territory each year, eight Cups in total. The Cups will replace regular-season league play, conclude with finals weekends, and directly qualify teams to Masters and Champions. Riot’s announcement describes the format as an open qualification route within a unified system.
Some specifics—including regional calendars and slot allocations—were still to be shared in the announcement. Until those details are published, the announced Cup model should be treated as a future plan, not as the format already used in 2026. Riot also said that “over $86M” had been shared from digital goods with VCT teams, referring to “last year” without naming a calendar year in that sentence.
