Construction slowdowns usually reach building-products earnings through fewer project starts and orders, lower shipment volumes, and then pressure on margins as fixed costs are spread across fewer units. The size of the hit depends on what a company sells: weakness in new homebuilding may be partly offset by roofing replacement, repair and remodeling, commercial work, or infrastructure—but diversification does not guarantee protection.
How a slowdown moves from construction activity to earnings
Fewer starts and projects mean fewer orders
Builders and contractors tend to order fewer materials or defer purchases when projects are delayed or new construction slows. Housing starts are a useful signal for companies exposed to residential building, but they are not a complete measure of demand across building products. LP says it monitors U.S. housing starts because they correlate with demand for many of its products (LP investor materials).

Lower shipments can magnify the earnings decline
When production or distribution volumes fall, fixed costs are spread across fewer units. As a result, profit can contract faster than revenue. Builders FirstSource reported that its fourth-quarter 2025 net sales fell 12.1% year over year, primarily because of a below-normal starts environment. Its adjusted EBITDA fell 44.3%, primarily due to lower gross profit, while its adjusted EBITDA margin declined 470 basis points; the company cited lower gross margins and reduced operating leverage as drivers (Builders FirstSource, Q4 and full-year 2025 results).

Shipment volume is only one part of the earnings picture. Selling prices, product mix, commodity movements, input costs, and the timing of cost changes can widen or narrow the spread between revenue and costs. A revenue decline therefore does not, by itself, show how much demand weakened or how much of the profit change came from volume. Separate those factors when reading a company’s results.

Why building-products companies can fare differently
New residential construction
Companies with substantial exposure to new homebuilding can feel a slowdown through fewer starts, lower builder orders, or delayed projects. LP’s reported sales volumes illustrate that product categories can also move differently: for the six months ended June 30, 2026, siding volume was 804 million square feet, down from 935 million in the same 2025 period; total OSB sales volume was 1,468 million square feet, compared with 1,704 million. These are company-reported volumes for those six-month periods, not an industry-wide measure (LP investor materials).
Roofing replacement and repair
Replacement roofing and repair demand can behave differently from new construction. Even so, a resilient category may not be large enough to offset weakness elsewhere. Carlisle said healthy re-roof activity was more than offset by continued softness in commercial new construction. That example shows why a company’s total result depends on the weight of each end market, not simply whether one category is holding up.

Commercial construction and infrastructure
Commercial and public-infrastructure demand can follow different cycles from residential starts. Owens Corning’s outlook described pressure in residential new construction and discretionary remodeling, while expecting North American non-residential activity to be stable. CRH described subdued residential new-build conditions alongside resilient repair and remodeling and infrastructure-supported demand. These were company outlook statements, not guarantees of future results.

Diversification can cushion weakness, not remove it
Westlake said its mix of housing and infrastructure products delivered sales and earnings growth during lower North American residential construction activity, with infrastructure demand supported in part by spending that included data centers. This is an example of how end-market mix can help a particular company; it does not establish that diversification will protect every company’s earnings.

What recent company results show—and what they do not
Company examples help illustrate the mechanisms, but they are not a single industry-wide estimate of the earnings impact. Their periods, product portfolios, geographies, and reporting metrics differ.
| Company and period | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Builders FirstSource, Q4 2025 | Net sales down 12.1% year over year; adjusted EBITDA down 44.3%; adjusted EBITDA margin down 470 basis points. | The company linked lower sales primarily to a below-normal starts environment and the adjusted EBITDA decline primarily to lower gross profit; it cited lower gross margins and reduced operating leverage for the margin decline (company release). |
| Owens Corning, Q4 2025 versus Q4 2024 | Roofing EBITDA margin was 26%, versus 32%; insulation EBITDA margin was 20%, versus 23%. | Margins differed by business segment; these figures alone do not isolate construction volume from price, mix, or costs (company release). |
| LP, six months ended June 30, 2026 versus the same 2025 period | Siding sales volume was 804 million square feet versus 935 million; total OSB sales volume was 1,468 million square feet versus 1,704 million. | These are two product-volume comparisons for LP over matching six-month periods, not direct comparisons with other companies’ volume metrics (LP investor materials). |
The figures describe the named companies and periods. They do not establish how every building-products company will perform in a slowdown, nor do they predict future earnings or share prices.

- Inventory and channel effects: Look for destocking, restocking, shipment timing, or production cuts. These can make reported shipments temporarily diverge from demand at the project level.
- Financing and capital allocation: Interest expense, debt, capital spending, and share repurchases can affect earnings per share and cash flow independently of construction demand.
- Comparable periods and definitions: Companies use different fiscal calendars and may define volume, adjusted EBITDA, or housing-start measures differently. Avoid treating unlike metrics as directly comparable.
