Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf a large PlayStation Plus RPG will not fit on your PS5, first check what is using space in Settings > Storage. Then choose between deleting a game you can download again, archiving PS5 game data on USB, adding a compatible internal M.2 SSD, or streaming the title if your membership, region, and game support it. These options handle different things: USB can archive PS5 installs but cannot launch them, while cloud storage holds saved data—not game installs.
Check what is taking up space
- Open Settings > Storage to see available space and storage categories.
- Select Console Storage > Games and Apps to review installed games and apps and identify candidates to remove.
- If a game has a Customize option, check whether it lets you remove unused add-ons or completed portions. This control is available only for some titles; it is not a general feature of every game.
Before deleting anything, distinguish the installed game files from saved data. The game install takes up space used to launch the title; saves record your progress and are managed separately.

Delete a game and download it again when needed
Deleting an installed game is the simplest no-hardware way to make room if you are not playing it now. Sony says purchased games can be downloaded again from your Game Library, so removing the install does not remove your purchase entitlement. The trade-off is that you will need to download and install the game again before playing it, which takes time and uses your internet connection.

A compatible USB extended-storage drive can hold PS5 game data for later, and compatible PS4 games can be played directly from the drive. For a PS5 game stored on USB, Sony’s instruction is: “To play PS5 games, you need to move game data from your USB extended storage drive back to your PS5 console storage or M.2 SSD storage.” In other words, USB is an archive for PS5 installs, not a place to launch them from.
#1 Best Overall
- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Sony’s Canada storage overview lists supported external-drive capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Check the current guidance for your region and the drive’s compatibility before buying or formatting one; capacity alone does not establish that a particular drive is suitable.
Add an internal M.2 SSD to keep more PS5 games ready to play
A compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD is the expansion option that can store, download, copy, and launch PS5 games directly. Sony’s current US guidance gives these selection requirements:

| Check | Sony’s stated guidance |
|---|---|
| Interface and type | PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe, Key M; M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported. |
| Capacity | 250 GB–8 TB. |
| Supported length | 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm. |
| Width | Up to 25 mm, including the cooling structure. |
| Thickness | Up to 11.25 mm, subject to Sony’s specified limits above and below the board. |
| Read speed | A sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster is recommended. |
| Cooling | Effective heat dissipation is required. The SSD may have a built-in heatsink or need a separate cooling structure. |
Do not treat a generic “M.2” label or a claimed speed as proof of compatibility. Check the drive’s exact dimensions, cooling arrangement, and manufacturer’s compatibility information against Sony’s requirements. Sony cautions that it cannot guarantee every third-party drive that meets the listed specifications will work, and an M.2 game may not perform exactly like the same game on the built-in SSD—even if the drive exceeds the recommended speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Sony’s guide requires the console to have the latest system software before installation. The process involves opening the expansion slot and installing the drive; the steps differ by PS5 model group. Sony lists a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver as a required tool. The first time you use the expansion, the console formats the entire M.2 SSD, erasing existing data on it. Back up anything you need from that drive before installing and formatting it.

Keep saved data separate from game installs
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for game saved data, not installed RPG files. Sony Interactive Entertainment / PlayStation Support says: “You can save up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data.” The support page does not state a publication year. An active PlayStation Plus membership is required for cloud saves.
Cloud saves can help sync or transfer supported progress, but they do not free the space taken by an installed game. Deleting the game and managing the save are separate decisions.
Stream an eligible Game Catalog title instead of installing it
Sony allows eligible Game Catalog games to be downloaded or streamed with the correct PlayStation Plus membership plan. Streaming can avoid installing the full game locally, but it is not available for every catalog RPG. Check the game’s current listing, your plan, and regional availability before relying on it.
Quick Recap
- Sony states a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for streaming.
- For supported 1080p streaming, Sony states a minimum of 15 Mbps. The game must support that resolution, and streaming resolution may drop if the connection falls below the requirement.
- Streaming does not support some features, including Remote Play, Share Play/Share Screen, and broadcasting.
