To block ChatGPT, use the controls for the child’s device and check both the ChatGPT app and browser access. To limit rather than block it, link a teen’s account to a parent account and set Quiet hours, or use the device’s screen-time schedule. The right steps depend on whether the child uses Apple, Android or Chromebook, or Windows; no single app restriction should be assumed to block access everywhere.
Instructions and feature availability can change. The platform help pages linked below are current as checked on October 7, 2026; verify the menus and requirements for your device, software version, account, and region.

Choose the kind of restriction you need
ChatGPT offers account-level controls for linked teen accounts, while Apple, Google, and Microsoft provide controls at the device or family-account level. Account controls can adjust certain ChatGPT features and schedule access; device controls can block an app, restrict websites, or set screen-time limits.

- Scheduled access or feature limits: Start with ChatGPT parental controls for a teen account. Device screen-time schedules may also help limit when the device is available.
- Block the ChatGPT app: Use the family controls for the child’s device, where supported.
- Block the website: Configure website controls, and check which browsers they cover. Blocking the app alone does not establish that the website is blocked.
- Restrict browsing more broadly: On Apple devices, consider Ask to Browse or Approved Websites Only. On other platforms, confirm browser coverage in the platform’s current help instructions.
For practical coverage, check each device and browser the child can use, not just the device where ChatGPT was first installed.

Use ChatGPT parental controls for a teen account
OpenAI’s parental controls link a parent or guardian account with a teen’s ChatGPT account. This can provide settings for certain features and a schedule that limits access, but it is not a device-wide block: it does not control access through unrelated accounts or every app and browser on a device.
Link the accounts
- On the web, open the parent or guardian’s profile menu and choose Settings > Parental controls > Add family member.
- Invite the teen by phone or email.
- After the teen accepts, select the teen under Family members to review the available settings.
OpenAI lists settings for sensitive-content safeguards, model-improvement data use, saved memories, Voice Mode, image generation, and Study mode. Which settings are available and their defaults can vary. Check the current OpenAI parental-controls instructions for the options shown on your account.

Set Quiet hours to limit access
In the teen’s parental-control settings, configure Quiet hours with a start and end time. OpenAI says more than one Quiet hours block can be added. This is the account-level schedule intended to make ChatGPT unavailable during selected periods.

Understand the privacy and unlinking limits
OpenAI says, “Linking accounts does not give a parent or guardian access to a teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity.” Either person can unlink the accounts. If the teen unlinks, OpenAI says the parent is notified and loses control of settings and notifications for that account. Safety notifications are limited to certain serious-risk situations and do not include conversation transcripts. See ChatGPT for Teens for related information.
Block or limit ChatGPT on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac
Apple’s Screen Time family controls can restrict individual apps and websites. The current support guide describes managing a child’s settings through Settings > Family > [child] > Apps & Websites. From there, use the available controls to allow or block specific apps and websites.

- To restrict the app: Find ChatGPT in the app controls and block it.
- To restrict the website: Use the website controls for the ChatGPT site.
- To limit access to unfamiliar sites: Ask to Browse can require approval for new websites in Safari and other supported browsers.
- To allow only selected sites: Choose Approved Websites Only under website filtering, if that option is available on your device.
Apple notes that features can vary by device, operating-system version, the child’s age, and region. Its support page also describes updated controls being introduced in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and other OS 27 releases; families on earlier software may see different options. Check Apple’s current parental-controls guide before following the menu path.

Block or limit ChatGPT on Android or Chromebook
Google Family Link supports app controls and screen-time schedules or daily limits on supported supervised devices. A child needs a Google Account supervised through Family Link, and the device must meet Google’s compatibility requirements. The cited setup information lists Android 6.0 or later and Chromebooks with Chrome OS 71 or later; check Google’s current requirements because they can change.

- Set up or open the parent’s Family Link account and select the child’s supervised account.
- Use the app controls to allow or block the ChatGPT app, if it is installed and shown as controllable.
- Use screen-time settings to set a daily limit or bedtime schedule for the supervised device.
- Check the child’s browsers separately if you also need to restrict the ChatGPT website.
Google’s general setup page documents app and time controls, but does not establish a direct ChatGPT domain block. Do not treat blocking the app as proof that browser access is blocked. Consult Google’s current Family Link setup and compatibility information.
Block ChatGPT with Microsoft Family Safety on Windows
Microsoft Family Safety’s instructions describe blocking apps and websites for a family member. For an app restriction, choose the family member, open the Windows tab, find the app under Apps, features, and games, and select Block app.
For a website restriction, Microsoft directs parents to Web safety > Blocked sites and specifically lists chat.openai.com among sites they may consider blocking. Follow Microsoft’s current Family Safety instructions for the supported browser and device requirements before relying on web filtering.

This matters because a restriction applied in one browser does not automatically demonstrate that the child cannot use another route to the site.
Check whether the block covers the child’s actual access
After changing settings, review the result on the child’s device rather than assuming one setting covers every route. Check the ChatGPT app and the website in each browser the child can open, and repeat the review on other devices they use. Family controls differ in what they manage, and availability may depend on software, account setup, region, and browser.
