How Code Review Works When Developers Use AI Coding Assistants

AI coding assistants make code review faster, not optional. Use one for a consistent first pass that summarizes a pull request, points out likely defects, explains unfamiliar code, and proposes candidate fixes. Keep a human reviewer responsible for requirements, architecture, authorization, data handling, operational risk, and the final approval.

The safest workflow is deterministic checks plus AI assistance plus a named human owner. Treat every AI comment as evidence to investigate, never as proof that the implementation is correct.

What AI-assisted code review actually means

Modern code review is an incremental code contribution examined by one or more peers before it is committed. The reviewer checks more than syntax: the change must satisfy its intended behavior, fit the system’s design, preserve security boundaries, and be maintainable by the team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An AI assistant adds a fast, repeatable pass over the same change. It can read a diff, describe the likely intent, identify common style and maintainability problems, flag obvious error paths, and suggest tests or fixes. It is particularly useful when a reviewer needs a quick explanation of unfamiliar code or wants a second opinion on a large but mechanically patterned change.

AI review is not an independent acceptance test. A model may misunderstand a business rule, overlook a threat that is specific to your deployment, recommend an unsafe authorization change, or confidently approve code that has never run. The person approving the pull request still owns the decision.

Why teams combine AI with human review

A 2024 Google and University of Washington paper describes automated enforcement of recurring coding practices as feasible in a large industrial setting. Its AutoCommenter system covered C++, Java, Python, and Go and focused on practices such as formatting, naming, documentation, language features, and idioms. Those are valuable, repeatable checks, but they are only one layer of review.

Microsoft Engineering reported in 2025 that its internal workflow used an AI reviewer on more than 90% of pull requests, exceeding 600,000 pull requests per month. That is a vendor-reported deployment measure, not an independent defect-rate benchmark. It demonstrates the scale at which an always-available second opinion can operate, not that an AI comment is equivalent to a qualified human decision.

Use AI where consistency and speed matter. Reserve human attention for questions that require context, accountability, or a prediction about how the system will behave in production.

The practical AI-assisted review loop

1. Make the pull request reviewable

Start before an assistant sees the diff. Keep the change narrow enough that a reviewer can understand it without reconstructing an entire project. The description should state the user or operational problem, the intended behavior, the interfaces touched, important data flows, migration or rollout concerns, and what is deliberately out of scope.

Ask the author or coding agent to disclose generated or agent-authored portions when team policy requires it. This is not a substitute for reviewing those lines; it tells reviewers where assumptions may have been introduced and helps the team audit its process.

  • Separate refactoring from behavior changes when possible.
  • Call out new endpoints, permissions, schemas, background jobs, and third-party calls.
  • Include a test plan with both normal and failure cases.
  • Explain compatibility requirements for older clients, stored data, and rolling deployments.

2. Give the assistant repository-specific context

A generic prompt produces generic comments. Put the project’s coding standards, testing expectations, supported language versions, architecture rules, security requirements, and definition of done in repository instructions. GitHub’s guidance on custom instructions says that adding repository context gives prompts the information needed for fuller coverage; instructions should be specific to the repository rather than copied from a universal style guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tell the assistant which directories are security-sensitive, which services own particular data, how authorization is normally enforced, and which compatibility constraints cannot be broken. Also state what not to flag, such as generated files or intentionally duplicated code, so the review does not fill with noise.

3. Run an AI first pass

Ask for a concise change summary before asking for criticism. Then request findings grouped by severity and tied to exact files and lines. A useful first pass asks for:

  • Behavioral defects and unhandled error paths.
  • Missing validation, null handling, timeouts, retries, or cancellation.
  • API, schema, configuration, and compatibility changes.
  • Security concerns, including authorization gaps, injection paths, unsafe deserialization, and sensitive-data exposure.
  • Tests that are missing or that assert implementation details instead of behavior.
  • Maintainability, reliability, and style issues that violate repository rules.

Require the assistant to explain its evidence and to mark uncertainty. A comment that says “this may fail when the request is retried because the operation is not idempotent” is actionable; a vague statement that code “could be improved” is not.

GitHub Code Quality can surface maintainability, reliability, and style issues. Copilot Autofix can propose fixes for some CodeQL alerts, and generic secret detection can identify unstructured secrets. These are candidate findings and fixes: verify each one against the actual code and threat model.

4. Run deterministic checks in CI

Automated review should not replace executable evidence. Require the same checks for human-written and AI-assisted changes:

  • Build or compile the affected targets.
  • Unit tests for changed logic and integration tests for real boundaries.
  • Formatting, linting, and type checks.
  • Dependency and license policy checks.
  • Static code scanning and security analysis.
  • Secret scanning, including patterns for the credentials used by your systems.
  • Migration, contract, and compatibility tests where interfaces or stored data changed.

Configure branch protection so required workflows pass before merge. A green pipeline proves that the configured checks passed; it does not prove that the requirement was understood correctly or that an untested edge case is safe.

5. Perform the human review

The human reviewer should read the requirement and the diff together, not merely approve after an AI summary. Verify the following questions in context:

  • Does the implementation deliver the requested behavior, including failure and boundary cases?
  • Does every authorization decision occur at the correct trust boundary?
  • Are input validation, output encoding, and data-classification rules appropriate?
  • Are retries, timeouts, concurrency, transactions, and partial failures handled?
  • Will schema, API, or configuration changes work during a rolling deployment?
  • Do logs, metrics, and traces reveal enough for operations without exposing private data?
  • Do tests make meaningful behavioral assertions, or do they only increase line coverage?
  • Is the change scoped correctly, understandable, and consistent with the architecture?

Follow important values through the call chain instead of trusting names. A variable called user_id may be attacker-controlled, and a helper called authorize may check the wrong resource. Human review is where those project-specific facts are established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Resolve findings and approve deliberately

Ask the author to resolve each accepted finding with a code change or a written explanation. Do not reward the assistant for producing a high comment count; reward findings that lead to a verified improvement. Require at least one human approval, and use CODEOWNERS for sensitive paths such as identity, payments, cryptography, infrastructure, and data migrations.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Consider dismissing stale approvals after new commits. Whether that is necessary depends on your threat model and branch-protection settings, but an approval made before a material security change should not silently carry forward.

7. Merge with agent-specific controls

Keep coding agents away from protected branches. GitHub states that its coding agent can create pull requests but cannot commit directly to a default branch. It also states that pull requests created by the agent do not run CI automatically; a human must validate the code and manually run GitHub Actions. Treat those pull requests as untrusted input until the required checks have actually run.

Use least-privilege tokens, restrict write access to the smallest set of repositories and branches, and prevent an agent from approving its own work. Review workflow-file changes especially carefully because a pull request that can alter CI permissions may be able to change what gets executed or exposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Learn from production outcomes

Measure whether the workflow improves engineering outcomes rather than whether it generates more comments. Track escaped defects, reverted changes, vulnerability findings, flaky tests, review latency, accepted versus rejected AI comments, and recurring review misses. Segment the data by repository and change type; a model may be useful for repetitive configuration edits and poor at a highly coupled database migration.

Use those observations to update repository instructions, tests, static-analysis rules, and reviewer training. Do not tune prompts to maximize approval speed if defects or reversions increase.

What AI reviewers are good at

  • Consistent convention checks: Repeating naming, formatting, documentation, and idiom rules across every pull request.
  • Diff explanation: Summarizing changed files, call paths, and likely user-visible effects for a busy reviewer.
  • Obvious defect discovery: Pointing out likely null dereferences, unchecked errors, missing validation, unreachable branches, and incomplete test cases.
  • Static-analysis assistance: Explaining supported findings and proposing a candidate remediation, including some CodeQL alerts through Copilot Autofix.
  • Secret detection support: Flagging some hard-coded or unstructured secrets and suggesting patterns for secret scanning.
  • Second-opinion availability: Reviewing at any hour and helping a reviewer decide which parts of a large diff deserve closer inspection.

These strengths come from pattern recognition and repository context. They do not establish that a particular design is correct or that a vulnerability is absent.

What still requires human judgment

Product intent and scope

Only a person with access to the requirement, user impact, and roadmap can decide whether the change solves the right problem. An assistant can compare code with a written ticket, but it cannot reliably infer an unstated business rule or recognize that a technically correct feature is harmful to a customer workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security boundaries and privacy

Review who can invoke each operation, whose data can be read or changed, and which service is trusted to make the decision. Check tenant isolation, privilege escalation paths, replay behavior, logging of personal data, retention, encryption, and key handling. A model may notice a missing check but still suggest moving the check to a layer that attackers can bypass.

Distributed and operational behavior

Inspect queue semantics, idempotency, retries, timeouts, race conditions, deadlocks, resource limits, deployment order, rollback behavior, and observability. These concerns often depend on production topology and failure assumptions that are not present in a source file.

Test meaning

Coverage percentage is not evidence that the important failures are exercised. Read assertions and fixtures. A test that mocks the authorization service into returning success may never test authorization. A test that checks only a status code may miss data leakage in the response body.

Suggested fixes

Apply an AI-generated patch only after confirming that it preserves the intended behavior. A fix that removes an exception, broadens a permission, disables a check, or changes a timeout can make the symptom disappear while increasing risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to review AI-generated code for security

Use a separate security pass rather than assuming that a general review covered it. Start with the data and trust boundaries, then inspect the implementation.

  1. Classify inputs and outputs. Identify user-controlled, service-controlled, and secret values. Trace where each enters, is transformed, stored, logged, or returned.
  2. Verify authorization at the resource boundary. Confirm that the subject is allowed to act on this specific object, tenant, account, or operation. Do not rely on an earlier UI check.
  3. Check validation and encoding. Validate type, range, length, and allowed values at the server boundary; encode data for its output context; and review parsers, templates, queries, and shell calls.
  4. Inspect identity and session behavior. Review token audience, expiration, rotation, impersonation, reset flows, and error messages that could reveal account existence.
  5. Review secrets and dependencies. Ensure credentials are loaded from the approved secret store, never committed or logged, and that new dependencies are pinned and assessed.
  6. Test abuse paths. Add cases for unauthorized access, malformed input, replay, race conditions, oversized payloads, rate limits, and partial failure.
  7. Examine CI and deployment changes. A workflow or infrastructure edit can alter permissions, artifact provenance, or what code runs with production credentials.

Static scanning and secret scanning are valuable signals, but a clean result means only that those configured detectors found nothing. It does not replace threat modeling or a review by the owner of the affected security boundary.

Required checks and merge gates

Gate What it establishes What it cannot establish
Build and type checks The configured targets compile and declared types are consistent. That runtime behavior or deployment configuration is correct.
Unit tests Specific functions behave as asserted for selected inputs. That integrations, production data, or failure timing are safe.
Integration and contract tests Connected components honor tested interfaces and protocols. That untested clients, versions, or rollout orders work.
Lint and formatting Mechanical style and selected anti-pattern rules pass. That the design satisfies the requirement.
Dependency checks Known policy or vulnerability rules for declared dependencies pass. That the dependency is appropriate or configured securely.
Code scanning Configured static-analysis rules found no blocking result. That novel or context-specific vulnerabilities are absent.
Secret scanning Configured credential patterns were not detected in the scanned content. That secrets were never exposed elsewhere or that every secret format is recognized.
Human approval An accountable reviewer judged the change against requirements and risk. That the reviewer cannot make a mistake; ownership and review quality still matter.

Branch protection should require the checks that match the repository’s risk. A low-risk documentation change may not need the same integration suite as an identity or migration change, but the exception should be explicit and auditable.

Governance for teams adopting AI review

GitHub’s rollout guidance recommends that developers and potentially malicious actors must not unilaterally apply unvetted AI suggestions or agent work to sensitive codebases. A practical policy includes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An approved pull request with a clear description and identifiable author.
  • At least one human approval, with CODEOWNERS for designated sensitive paths.
  • Passing required CI workflows before merge.
  • Enforced code scanning and secret scanning.
  • Repository or organization instructions that define coding, testing, and security expectations.
  • Least-privilege credentials and no direct agent access to protected branches.
  • Audit logs that distinguish human-authored, AI-assisted, and agent-generated changes where policy requires that attribution.
  • A documented process for reporting a bad suggestion, exposed secret, or escaped vulnerability.

Review data-exposure terms, retention, and administrator controls for the assistant you select. Do not place production secrets, customer records, or proprietary code in a service unless your organization’s contract and configuration permit that use.

How to compare AI review tools or workflows

Compare the complete workflow, not the marketing label. The useful dimensions are:

Dimension Questions to ask
Coverage Which languages, frameworks, file types, and change types are analyzed?
Precision How often are comments actionable, and how are duplicate or low-confidence findings suppressed?
Repository context Can the team supply architecture, coding, testing, and security instructions?
Security Are code scanning, secret scanning, dependency checks, and workflow-file changes covered?
CI integration Can findings block a merge, and are required checks guaranteed to run on agent-created pull requests?
Attribution and audit Can you identify the agent, prompt context, generated patch, reviewer, and approval history?
Permissions and data exposure What repository data is sent to the service, how is it retained, and what credentials can the agent use?
Latency and cost How quickly does feedback arrive, and are usage limits or billing details suitable for the team’s volume?
Human gates Does the workflow enforce named approval and prevent self-approval or protected-branch writes?

The strongest baseline is ordinary CI and static analysis, an AI assistant for explanation and candidate findings, and a named human owner for approval. An AI tool that adds comments without fitting those controls is an additional notification stream, not a complete review process.

Common failure modes and fixes

The assistant produces many low-value comments

Narrow the prompt to correctness, security, reliability, and repository-specific rules. Require severity, evidence, and an exact location. Exclude generated files and known intentional patterns in repository instructions. Measure accepted comments rather than total comments.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The assistant approves unsafe code

Do not use approval language as a gate. Require deterministic checks and human sign-off. Add tests for the missed failure mode, update the security rule or repository instruction, and record the incident so future reviews look for the same pattern.

A generated fix changes behavior

Review the patch as a new change. Compare its control flow and permissions with the original requirement, run targeted regression tests, and ask the author to explain why the fix is safe. Never merge a suggested patch solely because it removes the reported warning.

CI is green but the change is still risky

Check whether the relevant workflow actually ran, whether tests use realistic authorization and data, and whether migrations or deployment-order scenarios are covered. Agent-created pull requests may require a human to start Actions manually, so verify the run rather than assuming it exists.

Reviewers trust a summary instead of the diff

Use the summary as a map, then inspect the changed lines and their callers. Require reviewers to state which requirement, threat boundary, or operational assumption they verified for high-risk changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The pull request is too large for any reviewer

Split mechanical changes from behavior changes, isolate migrations, and submit a sequence that can be reverted safely. Ask the assistant to identify high-risk files, but do not let that ranking substitute for reducing the scope.

A reusable review prompt

Teams can standardize a prompt while keeping repository rules in version-controlled instructions:

Review this pull request against the repository requirements and stated intent. First summarize the behavior change and affected interfaces. Then report only actionable findings, each with file, line, severity, evidence, and a proposed verification step. Check authorization, input validation, data exposure, error handling, retries, concurrency, migrations, observability, dependency changes, CI changes, and missing tests. Distinguish confirmed defects from risks that require human context. Do not approve the pull request.

The final sentence is intentional: the assistant supplies evidence and questions; the human owner makes the approval decision.

Team checklist before merging an AI-assisted pull request

  • The pull request states intent, scope, interfaces, data flows, and rollout concerns.
  • Generated or agent-authored portions are disclosed when policy requires it.
  • Repository instructions supplied the relevant coding, testing, architecture, and security context.
  • The AI pass produced line-specific, evidence-based findings rather than an unexplained verdict.
  • Build, tests, lint, type checks, dependency checks, code scanning, and secret scanning completed successfully where required.
  • A human verified requirements, authorization, validation, privacy, error handling, concurrency, migrations, observability, and meaningful tests.
  • Accepted findings were fixed or explicitly explained; rejected findings were not silently ignored.
  • Required CODEOWNERS and human approvals are present, and stale approvals were handled according to policy.
  • Agent-created pull requests had their CI runs manually verified when automatic execution was not guaranteed.
  • The merge target is protected, credentials are least-privilege, and no agent can approve or write directly to it.
