How ClickFix Attacks Trick People Into Installing Malware

ClickFix attacks disguise malware delivery as a quick fix. Here is how the social-engineering chain works, which recent variants have been reported, and what individuals and organizations should do.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ClickFix is a social-engineering attack, not a single malware program. A page, message or advertisement invents a problem—such as a failed CAPTCHA, browser error or required update—and then tells you to copy and run a command. Because you perform the decisive step yourself, the activity can look like ordinary troubleshooting while the command downloads an infostealer, remote-access tool, ransomware or another payload. Microsoft reports ClickFix activity against both Windows and macOS.

What a ClickFix attack is

ClickFix is the name used for a family of lures that persuade a person to execute an attacker-provided command. The attacker does not necessarily exploit a software vulnerability or present an obvious executable download. Instead, the victim is told that a small technical action will restore a webpage, prove that they are human or complete an update.

Microsoft Threat Intelligence and Microsoft Defender Experts described the technique on August 21, 2025: “The ClickFix technique attempts to trick users into running malicious commands on their devices by taking advantage of their target’s tendency to solve minor technical issues and other seemingly benign interactions, such as human verification and CAPTCHA checks.” The important security boundary is the command execution. A legitimate CAPTCHA or ordinary browser troubleshooting message should not require you to paste text into Run, PowerShell or Terminal.

The name comes from the promise that one click or one “fix” will solve the problem. The visible page may contain a button labeled “Fix It,” instructions to “prove that you are human,” or a warning that a document, browser or operating-system component is broken. The wording and graphics change frequently, but the behavioral request is consistent: copy attacker-controlled text and run it locally.

How the deception becomes a malware infection

1. The victim is brought to a convincing page

Entry can begin with a phishing email, a malicious advertisement, a redirect, a compromised website or a page that imitates a familiar online service. The page may be presented as a login flow, video player, document viewer, browser warning or security check. A person who arrived through a search result or an otherwise normal site may not realize that an advertisement or redirect changed the destination.

2. A false problem creates urgency

The page claims that a verification step failed, a browser component needs repair, an update is missing or a document cannot be displayed. The instruction is designed to feel like routine support rather than an installation. Visual details such as logos, progress indicators and familiar wording are there to reduce hesitation.

3. The page supplies a command

The victim is asked to copy text, open a command interface and paste it. Depending on the operating system and campaign, that interface may be Windows Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, macOS Terminal or another shell. The instruction can be split into several apparently harmless steps so that the user does not see a conventional download link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Native utilities fetch and launch the next stage

When executed, the command can use tools already present on the device to retrieve a script or payload and start additional processes. This “living off the land” appearance can make the event look different from a browser downloading an installer. The exact command, hosting location and sequence vary by campaign.

5. The payload pursues the operator’s objective

Reported outcomes include information stealers, loaders, remote-access tools and ransomware. An infostealer may target browser credentials, session tokens, cryptocurrency wallets or other sensitive data; a remote-access tool can give an operator interactive control; a loader can install several later components. The same ClickFix-style lure does not imply the same malware family or final impact.

Why ClickFix works

  • It exploits a familiar action. People have learned to complete CAPTCHAs, click “repair” prompts and follow browser troubleshooting instructions.
  • It moves trust from the site to the user. A page does not need to bypass every security control if the user authorizes the command.
  • It can avoid a conspicuous download. Native command interpreters and utilities may be used before the final payload appears.
  • It creates time pressure. A blocked document, expiring session or security warning discourages careful checking.
  • It is adaptable. Attackers can change the pretext, delivery route, command interface and payload without changing the central social-engineering idea.

The Center for Internet Security Cyber Threat Intelligence team wrote on October 27, 2025 that ClickFix “exploits users’ familiarity with completing CAPTCHAs and other verification prompts, and it is designed to bypass defenses by tricking users into running malicious shell scripts themselves that download malware and additional malicious tools.”

Recent ClickFix variants and what changes between campaigns

ClickFix is a technique, so a report about one campaign should not be treated as a universal recipe. The following examples show how the same persuasion pattern can be repackaged.

Report Lure and entry route Interface or platform Reported outcome or significance

Center for Internet Security Cyber Threat Intelligence, October 27, 2025 Verification and CAPTCHA-themed social engineering Shell execution by the user Explains how scripts download malware and additional tools
Google Threat Intelligence Group, 2026 Deceptive instructions embedded in publicly shared generative-AI chat transcripts; activity first observed in early December 2025 Victims were directed to paste a command into a terminal Shows that shared AI content can become a distribution route; it does not mean every AI transcript is malicious
U.S. HHS Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center, October 29, 2024 Historical sector alert describing ClickFix attacks Not stated as one universal platform or command path Useful early background for understanding the technique in health-sector threat reporting

Compare reports on five separate axes: the pretext, the route that brought the victim to it, the operating system and command interface, the payload’s objective, and the control intended to interrupt the chain. A fake update reached through an advertisement is not operationally identical to a browser extension that displays a warning, even though both may end with a user-pasted command.

How large is the problem?

Scale figures are observations from particular monitoring programs, not a single global victim count. Microsoft Threat Intelligence and Microsoft Defender Experts wrote on August 21, 2025 that campaigns were reaching “thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally every day.” Microsoft Defender Experts also reported that thousands of devices were affected per month in early 2025 even when endpoint detection and response (EDR) was enabled.

The Center for Internet Security Cyber Threat Intelligence team reported on October 27, 2025 that ClickFix represented “over a third” of non-malware Albert Network Monitoring and Management alerts during the first half of 2025. That percentage describes alerts in that monitoring system, not all attacks or all organizations. The figures from Microsoft and CIS use different populations and methods and should not be added together or ranked as if they measured the same thing.

Warning signs that a “fix” is actually an attack

  • A CAPTCHA, browser page or document tells you to open Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt or Terminal.
  • You are instructed to copy text you cannot independently verify and paste it into a command interface.
  • The page uses urgent language such as “Fix It,” “prove that you are human,” “repair now” or a countdown.
  • A browser extension, pop-up or redirect suddenly claims that a familiar service or security component is broken.
  • The instruction asks you to disable security software, allow an unusual permission or ignore a warning.
  • The address bar, spelling, certificate warning or surrounding page does not match the service you expected.
  • A shared document, public post or AI chat transcript contains a command that you did not request.

One sign alone may be explainable, but a request to execute an unsolicited command is the decisive red flag. Treat the command as hostile until a trusted administrator or the service’s official support channel proves otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when a page asks you to paste a command

  1. Stop. Do not click the proposed fix, copy the text or open a command interface for the page.
  2. Close the tab or application. If it will not close normally, use the browser or operating system’s standard close controls rather than following the page’s instructions.
  3. Reach the service through a trusted route. Type the known address yourself, use a bookmarked official page or contact your organization’s help desk. Do not use the suspicious page’s phone number or link.
  4. Record the context. Note the URL, message, time, advertisement or document that led you there, and take a screenshot if doing so does not require interacting with the lure.
  5. Report it. Send the details to your employer’s security team, the website owner or the relevant phishing-reporting channel.

Do not assume that a command is safe because it is short, uses a familiar utility or appears in a CAPTCHA. The documented ClickFix mechanism depends on making that exact assumption.

If you already ran the command

  1. Disconnect the device from networks. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet to limit additional downloads and remote access. If the device is managed by an organization, follow its incident procedure immediately.
  2. Contact security or IT from another device. Tell them exactly what happened, when it happened and what page or message supplied the command.
  3. Preserve evidence. Keep the suspicious URL, email, chat transcript, browser history and screenshots. Do not repeatedly rerun the command or delete logs before responders can collect them.
  4. Use a trusted cleanup process. Security staff may isolate the endpoint, collect forensic data, reimage it or run approved endpoint scans. A single consumer scan cannot prove that every persistence mechanism is gone.
  5. Protect accounts from a clean device. Change passwords and revoke active sessions where appropriate, prioritizing email, identity, financial and administrator accounts. Enable multifactor authentication and review account activity.
  6. Watch for follow-on abuse. Look for password-reset notices, new mailbox rules, unexpected remote-access prompts, unusual financial transactions or messages sent from your accounts.

If regulated, financial or health information may have been exposed, involve the organization’s legal, privacy and incident-response contacts. The right notification duties depend on jurisdiction, sector and the information involved.

Controls organizations can use

Train for the behavior, not just the logo

Awareness sessions should show users the specific request that matters: a web page asking them to paste a command. Include fake CAPTCHA, update, document and browser-error examples, and explain that a legitimate verification prompt does not need a shell command. Repeat the lesson for phishing, malvertising, compromised websites and shared online content.

Reduce unnecessary command access

Restrict or monitor PowerShell, Command Prompt, Run and other command interfaces for users who do not need them. Use application-control and least-privilege policies that fit the organization’s software and administration model. Blocking every scripting tool can disrupt legitimate work, so test exceptions and provide an approved support path.

Harden endpoints and browsers

Microsoft’s CrashFix guidance recommends cloud-delivered antivirus protection, EDR in block mode, network protection, web protection, SmartScreen-capable browsers and relevant attack-surface-reduction rules. These are Microsoft’s product-specific recommendations; administrators should validate policy effects, operating-system coverage and exception requirements before deployment.

Control outbound communication

Network egress filtering can limit where scripts and newly launched processes connect. DNS, proxy and web controls can block known malicious infrastructure, while endpoint telemetry can flag suspicious interpreters, child processes and downloads. Controls should be layered because ClickFix may use legitimate native utilities and rapidly changing infrastructure.

Prepare an incident playbook

Define who receives reports, how an endpoint is isolated, which evidence is preserved, when credentials are reset and how affected partners are notified. Practice the process with a harmless simulation so employees know that reporting a mistaken click quickly is safer than hiding it.

Is every CAPTCHA or browser warning dangerous?

No. Real services use CAPTCHAs, browser notifications and update prompts. The distinguishing issue is not the visual theme; it is the requested action and the route you use to verify it. A normal CAPTCHA is completed within the webpage. A normal update is obtained through the operating system, browser or application’s established update mechanism. A page that asks you to paste an unknown command into a system shell has crossed into a high-risk behavior, regardless of how authentic its branding appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bottom line for staying safe

ClickFix succeeds when a person treats an attacker’s command as routine support. Refuse that step. Close the page, verify the alleged problem through a trusted route and report the lure. Organizations should reinforce that habit with least privilege, command-interface controls, endpoint and web protection, outbound filtering and a practiced response plan. The pretext may change from CAPTCHA to browser crash to public AI transcript, but the safety rule remains stable: never run an unsolicited command supplied by an untrusted page or message.
