The reliable way to fix a modded GTA V crash is to diagnose it in layers: identify whether you are running Legacy or Enhanced and record the build, test a completely unmodded installation, apply Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting, then re-enable mods in small groups. Only after the failing mod or limit is identified should you replace a matching gameconfig.xml or use a Heap or Packfile Limit Adjuster. These tools address different limits; none is a universal cure for crashes or low frame rates.
Start by classifying the failure
Write down exactly when the problem occurs and what changed immediately beforehand. “GTA 5 crashes after installing mods” can describe several unrelated faults, and the correct fix depends on the failure point.

Also record whether the issue began immediately after a Rockstar update. A mod that worked yesterday can fail when the executable or scripting interfaces change, even if none of your files were edited.
Confirm Legacy or Enhanced and record the build
GTA V now exists in Legacy and Enhanced editions on PC. Treat them as separate targets: a file or script that supports one edition may not support the other. Before changing a configuration, note the edition shown by your launcher and the installed game build. Keep that information in a text file beside your mod backups.

Check every mod and dependency
Open the download page or release notes for each script, loader, vehicle pack, and dependency. Look for an explicit Legacy or Enhanced designation and a supported build range. “Works with GTA V” without an edition or build is not enough evidence for a current installation.
For script mods, check required loaders, libraries, and game-version hooks as well as the main download. A current script paired with an old dependency can produce the same startup crash as an incompatible script. After a game update, wait for the maintainer to publish a compatible release when the notes say support is pending; do not assume that reinstalling the previous version restores compatibility. Establish a clean, unmodded baseline
Do not begin by changing heap numbers or downloading a different configuration. First determine whether the underlying game and PC work without third-party changes. - Close the game and launcher. Make a backup of your mod folder, modified archives, configuration files, and save games before removing anything.
- Disable third-party components. Temporarily move script loaders, plugins, add-on folders, and modified archives outside the game directory, or use the mod manager’s disable function. Do not delete files you may need to identify later.
- Patch the game and launcher. Install the current official update for your edition, then note the resulting build number.
- Update the graphics driver. Use the driver channel recommended for your GPU and reboot before testing.
- Verify game files. Run the launcher’s file-verification or repair command so corrupted or missing official files are replaced.
- Launch and test a repeatable scenario. Use the same save, location, and approximate play time each run. Test the menu, loading, and several minutes of gameplay rather than stopping at a successful launch.
- Review logs and diagnostics. Save launcher, game, and system error information that Rockstar’s troubleshooting article asks you to collect. Note the crash time and any module or error code.
If the vanilla game still crashes, stop changing mods. Resolve the general installation, driver, or system problem first. If it is stable unmodded, the evidence points toward a mod, dependency, or mod-related limit rather than a universal GTA V failure.
Isolate the offending mod without losing your setup
Isolation is a diagnostic method, not a guaranteed Rockstar procedure. It is reversible and produces better evidence than replacing several files at once.
- Make a change log. Record the build, enabled mods, dependency versions, configuration files, and test result for every run.
- Return to the known-good baseline. Confirm the unmodded game still passes the same launch and gameplay test.
- Group related files. Keep a loader with the scripts that require it, and keep a vehicle or map with its stated dependencies. Do not split a dependency from all of its consumers.
- Enable one small group. Start with a few mods that have the same function or were installed together. Test the repeatable scenario.
- Halve a failing group. If the group crashes, disable half of it and retest. Continue halving until one mod or dependency is implicated. If the group works, add another small group.
- Confirm the result. Disable the suspected item, then run the same test again. A single successful launch is not proof; repeat the scenario that originally failed.
- Check compatibility before replacing it. Look for a current release for your edition and build. If none exists, leave it disabled or roll back the game only when your update and platform policies permit that choice.
For intermittent crashes, repeat each test long enough to reach the original failure point and record location, mission, weather, and approximate elapsed time. Streaming-heavy areas and scripted events can reveal a conflict that a menu test never reaches.

Understand the limits before choosing a tool
Gameconfig.xml, Heap Limit Adjuster, and Packfile Limit Adjuster solve different classes of limits. Installing all three by habit can mask the real cause and make future updates harder to reverse.

Install a matching gameconfig or adjuster safely
Only proceed when the symptom and the mod’s instructions point to a specific limit. There is no universally safe heap value or gameconfig for every build and mod list.

- Back up first. Copy the original configuration, your current gameconfig, loaders, and the entire mods folder to a dated backup outside the game directory.
- Match the edition and build. Select a file that explicitly names Legacy or Enhanced and the build you recorded. A configuration for a different executable can cause an immediate startup crash.
- Read the installation path. Follow the chosen release’s instructions exactly. Community guides may use a mods folder and archive paths that differ between editions.
- Change one component at a time. Do not replace gameconfig, add a heap adjuster, and add a packfile adjuster in one test. You need to know which change affected the result.
- Run the baseline scenario. Test launch, loading, and the content that previously failed. Watch for a new crash point, missing assets, or worse performance.
- Roll back immediately if necessary. Restore the dated backup if the game fails earlier, becomes unstable, or the tool’s release notes do not match your build.
An additional community source that publishes regularly updated gameconfig files is OpenIV.org’s Gameconfig guide. “Updated regularly” does not guarantee that a file matches your particular build, so verify the version label yourself.

Crash before the menu
- Move every third-party loader, plugin, and modified archive out of the installation and verify official files.
- Confirm that the game launches in the correct edition after the latest update.
- Reintroduce only the loader required by one known-compatible script. If that alone breaks startup, the loader or its build support is the likely fault.
- Do not install a gameconfig or adjuster as the first response; those changes cannot repair a bad executable, driver, or loader.
Crash on loading a save
- Test a new game or an unmodded save if available. A save can reference removed or changed content.
- Disable the most recently added map, vehicle, or script group and repeat the same load.
- Check required DLC, archive, and script dependencies, then confirm the content supports your edition/build.
- Only after isolation points to an asset-count or archive limit should you test a matching gameconfig or packfile tool.
Crash after adding add-on vehicles or large packs
- Remove the newest pack and verify that the crash disappears under the same route or save.
- Check whether the author specifies a gameconfig, heap, packfile, or other limit requirement.
- Install one pack at a time and keep a count of archives and dependencies, so the first failing addition is identifiable.
- If a limit tool is required, use the release that names your edition and build and test with the smallest necessary change.
Crash during play after several minutes
- Record the exact activity that precedes the crash: mission trigger, menu action, location, or vehicle spawn.
- Run the same activity with scripts disabled, then with only the relevant script group enabled.
- Check for two scripts that hook the same event or require different versions of a shared library.
- Do not interpret a delayed crash alone as proof of heap exhaustion; confirm the mod’s documentation and the isolation result.
Low FPS, hitching, or texture pop-in
- Measure the unmodded game first with the same resolution, graphics preset, and location. If performance is already poor, follow Rockstar’s driver, update, verification, and diagnostic guidance.
- Re-enable visual packs and scripts separately. A higher texture load can increase streaming pressure without being a crash.
- Check CPU and GPU utilization, VRAM warnings, background recording, and overlays while reproducing the hitch. Change one graphics setting at a time and record the result.
- Do not expect Packfile Limit Adjuster Enhanced to raise frame rates: its listing specifically says it addresses RPF-archive problems and does not itself add performance or visual quality.
Recover cleanly after a game update
When a Rockstar update changes the build, treat the installation as a new compatibility checkpoint.
- Record the new build and edition, then copy the working pre-update mod setup to a safe location.
- Launch the updated game with all third-party files disabled. Verify files if the vanilla test fails.
- Read current release notes for each loader, script, dependency, gameconfig, and adjuster. Remove items whose maintainers have not declared support.
- Re-enable the loader and dependencies first, followed by one script or mod group at a time.
- Retest the original failure scenario and update your change log. If no compatible release exists, keep the affected mod disabled rather than forcing an old binary into the new build.
Community post-update guidance emphasizes checking current maintainer notes instead of assuming that a previously working script remains compatible. The same rule applies to configuration files and limit adjusters because their supported builds can change.
Use backups and reversible paths
A disciplined backup turns troubleshooting into a series of reversible experiments. Keep at least three states: the untouched official installation, the last known-good modded setup, and the current test setup. Date each folder and include the game build in its name.
- Back up original archives before using an archive editor.
- Prefer a dedicated mods folder when the chosen installation instructions support it, so official files remain recoverable.
- Keep copies of configuration files before every replacement.
- Preserve saves separately; never use a newly modified save as the only test case.
- When a change fails, restore the last known-good state rather than layering another “fix” on top.
A compact decision checklist
- Does the crash occur in the unmodded game? If yes, stay with Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting.
- Which edition and build are installed? Reject mods and tools that do not explicitly support them.
- What changed immediately before the failure? Disable that item or group first.
- Can the problem be reproduced with a small, documented set of mods? Use controlled reintroduction to identify the conflict.
- Does the symptom match an archive, heap, or add-on-limit problem described by the mod author? Choose only the corresponding tool.
- Did the change make the failure earlier or introduce new instability? Restore the backup and remove that change.
This process will not make an incompatible mod compatible, and it cannot turn a hardware or driver fault into a stable installation. It does give you a defensible answer about which layer is failing and leaves a clear path back to a working setup.
