Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On Windows and macOS, Chrome generally downloads updates in the background and applies them after you close and reopen the browser. To check now, open Help > About Google Chrome; if Chrome offers an update, select Relaunch. For phones, Linux, and Chromebooks, use the update route for that platform. Keep Stable for everyday browsing; Chrome Beta is Google’s preview channel for upcoming changes, not a guarantee that a particular feature will appear immediately.
How to check for and apply a desktop Chrome update
Google says Windows and macOS versions use GoogleUpdater, which regularly checks for updates and installs them when available. Updates ordinarily take effect after Chrome restarts. You can also prompt a check yourself:

- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates on this page and displays the installed version.
- If an update is ready, select Relaunch to apply it. If you are not ready, select Not now; the update can apply the next time you restart Chrome.
Chrome ordinarily restores open tabs and windows after relaunch, but Incognito windows do not reopen. For current desktop system requirements, consult Google’s Chrome update and requirements page; requirements vary by operating system and can change.

Use the update route for your device
Chrome updates are managed differently across platforms. Use the official route for the device rather than applying desktop instructions to a phone or Chromebook.

| Linux | Update Chrome through your Linux package manager. |
| Android | Use Google Play. Google’s current help page lists Android 10 and later as supported; check that page for current requirements: Chrome updates on Android. |
| iPhone or iPad | Use the Apple App Store’s update controls. Google directs iOS users to the App Store but the source does not specify exact navigation. |
| Chromebook | Update ChromeOS. Chrome and the operating system are updated together. |
What happens during update checks—and what Google says about data
Google’s documentation describes GoogleUpdater checks on Windows and macOS as sending the release channel, basic hardware information, the current Chrome version and how long it has been installed, and whether Chrome or the Chrome Apps Launcher was recently used. Chrome also sends a non-unique four-letter tag related to how it was obtained, which Google says helps deliver the correct software updates. Mobile updates are managed through Google Play or the Apple App Store, though Google says Chrome still uses Google servers for active-install counting and to notify users when a version is out of date. See Google’s explanation of data used when installing and updating Chrome.
Google says it uses aggregated GoogleUpdater data to estimate active Chrome installations and individual extensions. Its documented method does not require an identifier for each installation and does not let Google match update requests from the same Chrome installation over time; each request includes the date of the previous request to help prevent overcounting. This is a description of that counting method, not a claim that Chrome collects no data or that all Google data handling is anonymous.

Choosing Stable or Beta for new features
Google recommends the Stable channel for most users. Chrome Enterprise describes Stable as fully tested by the Chrome test team. Its current channel guidance says major Stable releases occur every two weeks and Beta provides a two-week preview. These are channel-level cadences, not a schedule for every feature to reach every user.
| Channel | What it is for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Stable | Everyday browsing; recommended by Google for most users. | Fully tested by Chrome’s test team. Google’s channel guidance states major releases every two weeks. |
| Beta | Previewing upcoming changes and trying design changes or new features early. | Offers a two-week preview of changes headed toward Stable, but does not guarantee when any particular feature will appear. On Android, Beta does not replace the usual Chrome app. |
If you want a preview, install Beta knowingly and keep in mind that it is a preview channel. For ordinary browsing, stay on Stable. Google’s consumer guidance is available for Chrome Beta on Android and its browser release channels.

Chromebook updates and the managed-device exception
On a Chromebook, ChromeOS updates include the browser. Google recommends automatic updates by default. Its ChromeOS management guidance describes full releases about every four weeks and minor security and software updates every two to three weeks. ChromeOS updates are differential, so the download size depends on how much has changed. These figures describe ChromeOS, not desktop Chrome browser releases. Administrators can review Google’s ChromeOS update-management guidance.
Managed organizations can choose slower ChromeOS channels to reduce the pace of feature changes, but that choice has a security-fix tradeoff:

- Stable: the default ChromeOS channel.
- LTC and LTS: offer feature updates approximately every six months, rather than the faster Stable cadence.
- Security fixes on LTS: Google says the channel prioritizes feature stability and includes targeted security fixes, but some critical fixes may wait until the next major LTS version—potentially as long as nine months in some cases.
That slower cadence is an organizational stability option, not a general consumer recommendation or proof that LTS is simply more secure. Administrators should weigh the feature schedule and documented fix timing against their deployment needs. See Google’s ChromeOS LTS guidance.
