In a 2014 report, researchers’ nylon and polyethylene fibers lifted loads more than 100 times heavier than human muscle of the same length and weight. That was a specific load comparison—not proof that polymer fibers outperform biological muscle in every way.
How does twisting turn a polymer fiber into a muscle?
The fibers work because heating changes their shape. Polymer chains aligned along a thread contract lengthwise as they warm and expand sideways. When the thread is twisted into a coil, those changes combine to move the coil. Depending on the direction of the twist, heating can make it expand or contract.

In this design, heat is the input that drives motion; the fiber is not a biological muscle, and the reported work does not describe a ready-made consumer actuator. The principle is simpler than the engineering: the difficult part is delivering and removing heat in a controlled way.

Chemistry World’s 2014 report described a demonstration in which four polyethylene fishing lines inside a silicone tube lifted and lowered a 7.2 kg weight twice per second as hot and cold water alternated around them. The report also said the research team’s twisted nylon and polyethylene muscles could lift loads over 100 times heavier than human muscle of the same length and weight. These are results attributed to that research, not performance guarantees for polymer actuators generally.

The report gave a fiber diameter range of 25 μm to 1 mm, with University of Texas at Dallas researcher Ray Baughman saying, “We’ve gone up to 1mm diameter.” It also quoted an approximate cost of $5 per kilogram for the thread used. That figure was reported in 2014 and should not be read as a current retail price.
Where might these fibers be useful?
The 2014 report discussed robotics and replacing some motors as possible applications. It described a motor-replacement demonstration that opened and closed windows in response to a building’s temperature, and prototype textiles intended to let more air through clothing when the wearer was warm.

- Closed loop provides better precission, greater speeds and overall better performance.
Lightweight exoskeletons and expressive companion robots were presented as hopes, not as proven or commercially available products. The report does not establish current commercial availability for these fibers or applications.

What is the main engineering limitation?
Controlling heat is central to controlling movement. Jonathan Rossiter, a biomimetics and robotics researcher at the University of Bristol, put it this way: “The challenge lies in control of thermal energy into and out of the material.” Heating and cooling must be managed to produce the desired motion and response. The report compared the behavior with shape-memory alloys and discussed hysteresis, but did not provide a current standardized comparison of actuator technologies.

The report also included skepticism about industrial usefulness. University of Pisa researcher Danilo de Rossi said: “It’s excellent optimisation, but how many thermally activated switches are used by industry? Almost zero.” The fibers’ impressive load demonstration therefore does not, by itself, establish that they are a practical replacement for conventional motors in a given application.
