For phones, laptops, e-bikes, e-scooters, power tools and other rechargeable electronics, the safest approach is to use the device maker’s charging instructions, watch for battery warning signs, and get away from an active fire. This guide covers lithium-ion battery safety; not every rechargeable device uses the same battery chemistry, so follow the instructions for your specific device.
How can you reduce the risk of a battery fire?
Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a compact space. Damage, overheating or a fault can start thermal runaway: uncontrolled heating that can spread from cell to cell. A failing battery may release flammable gases, eject parts and reignite after the first flames appear to be out. The U.S. Fire Administration explains these risks in its lithium-ion battery fire risks and response guidance.

- Use the charger supplied with the device or one the manufacturer explicitly approves. Follow the maker’s charging and storage directions.
- Charge on a stable surface, not on a bed or couch and not under a pillow. Keep the battery away from combustible materials, direct sunlight and hot cars.
- Do not charge outside the temperature limits specified by the device maker. The NFPA’s 2025 consumer safety sheet gives 32°F (0°C) to 105°F (40°C) as a charging range; treat this as NFPA guidance, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s limits.
- Do not leave a large device charging where it could block an exit.
These precautions are consistent with consumer guidance from the U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association.
What warning signs mean you should stop using a battery?
Stop using a battery if it smells unusual, changes color or shape, becomes excessively hot, leaks or makes odd noises. The NFPA’s consumer sheet lists these signs; USFA also advises stopping use when a battery shows signs of damage or failure.

If there is no fire and it is safe to do so, USFA says to move the device away from things that can burn. Do not pick up or carry a hot, smoking, leaking or swollen battery. For device-specific next steps, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider; do not resume use just because a warning sign fades.
What should you do if a lithium-ion battery is smoking or on fire?
- If it is smoking, burning or actively overheating, get people out. Leave the area and do not try to fight the fire or handle the device.
- Call 911. USFA’s community guidance says: “If a lithium-ion battery fire occurs, don’t try to put it out. Evacuate and call 911 immediately.”
- Stay away and follow emergency responders’ instructions. A battery can release flammable gases, eject parts or reignite after it appears extinguished.
USFA’s community education guidance, last reviewed May 1, 2026, is the source for this household response advice. Do not treat firefighter tactics or general extinguisher advice as a reason to approach a battery fire.

How should you dispose of a lithium-ion battery?
Do not put a used lithium-ion battery in household trash or an ordinary recycling bin. Take it to an appropriate local battery collection or recycling location, and check both local rules and the site’s acceptance instructions. Some collection sites have separate procedures for damaged batteries.

- Before transport, cover the battery’s ends and terminals with tape to help prevent accidental discharge and a possible fire, as NFPA advises. Battery terminal tape is a task-specific supply, not fire-suppression equipment.
- Do not treat tape as a way to make a swollen, leaking, hot or otherwise damaged battery safe. Contact local fire-safety or waste authorities for instructions on a damaged battery rather than carrying it to a collection point without checking.

Why do spare batteries go in carry-on baggage?
The FAA says spare lithium batteries are prohibited in checked baggage and must be carried on, subject to limits based on battery capacity and type. Keeping spares in the cabin means the crew can be alerted if a battery overheats, expands, smokes or burns. Tell a flight attendant immediately if that happens. Mobility-aid batteries can have different provisions, so check the FAA’s current Airline Passengers and Batteries rules for your device and trip rather than relying on a general watt-hour limit.
