Boron and Beryllium Finally Shake Hands: What the 2014 Discovery Means

Chemists reported a linear beryllium compound containing two boron–beryllium bonds—the first reported non-cluster example—and characterized the bonding as polar covalent.

Yes—boron and beryllium can form a bond. In a 2014 report, chemists described a discrete, linear compound with two boron–beryllium bonds, the first reported non-cluster Be–B bond. The authors characterized the bonding as polar covalent, based on structural and spectroscopic analysis and reactivity studies.

What did the researchers make?

The compound was a linear beryllium bis(diazaborolyl) species: a beryllium center bonded to two diazaborolyl groups, each joined to it through boron. Chemistry World described the structure as having two Be–B bonds and identified beryllium as the electrophilic center. The result concerns this prepared research compound—not a general tendency for boron and beryllium to bond under ordinary conditions.

The team reported making it by reacting Yamashita’s lithium diazaborolide with beryllium chloride (BeCl2). The published account establishes that synthesis and the characterization approach; it does not, on the evidence cited here, establish a detailed reaction mechanism, yield, bond length, or practical application.

What does “non-cluster bond” mean?

“Non-cluster” distinguishes the reported Be–B bond in this discrete compound from a bond occurring within a cluster compound. The priority claim is narrow: the paper presents this as the first reported non-cluster bond between boron and beryllium. It should not be broadened into a claim that no conceivable boron–beryllium interaction had existed before.

Why call the bond polar covalent?

The authors describe the bonding as polar covalent. That means the bond has covalent character—atoms share electron density—but the sharing is uneven, giving the bond polarity. Their assignment drew on structural and spectroscopic analysis as well as studies of the compound’s reactivity. It is a characterization of the bond in this particular molecule, not a claim that every possible Be–B interaction has the same character.

When was the discovery published?

The Royal Society of Chemistry record gives 11 November 2014 as the paper’s first online publication date. The article later appeared in the 2015 issue of Chemical Communications, volume 51, pages 737–740. PubMed lists 14 January 2015 as the issue date; that is the issue’s bibliographic date, not a contradiction of the earlier online publication.

What does it mean beyond the laboratory?

The finding answers a focused question in inorganic chemistry: researchers prepared and characterized a discrete compound containing a Be–B bond, rather than only a cluster-bound example. The cited reports do not establish a consumer use or product based on this compound. Its significance here is the documented bonding result, not an everyday application.
