What Rockstar has actually confirmed
Rockstar’s official description places Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. Their story follows an easy score that goes wrong and leaves them caught in a criminal conspiracy, forcing them to rely on one another. That wording establishes a connected two-protagonist campaign rather than two unrelated stories with a cosmetic link.

Rockstar and publisher Take-Two have also confirmed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 release says the footage in Trailer 2 was captured on PlayStation 5. Those are the announced platforms; a PC version has not been confirmed in the material currently available.

The strongest current model of switching
The most useful way to understand the available evidence is as a flexible relationship between the protagonists, not as a promise of a specific interface. A Dazed interview, reported by PC Gamer on August 26, 2026, says players can “choose to either play as a couple, or go off and cause chaos independently.” The same report describes Jason driving while the player switches attention to Lucia in the passenger seat to use the in-game phone.
1. Playing together
Jason and Lucia can operate as a pair. In a shared vehicle, robbery, escape or other activity, one may drive while the other handles another task. This arrangement treats the protagonists as active participants in one situation rather than requiring the player to abandon one character whenever control changes.
2. Exchanging roles inside the same situation
The reported passenger-seat example is the clearest indication of how switching may feel in practice. Jason can remain behind the wheel while the player moves focus to Lucia to scroll through her phone. Other coverage of the interview describes exchanging driving and shooting roles during an escape. These examples point to a context-sensitive handoff: the player changes the character performing the next action while the pair remain physically connected.
That is different from teleporting across the map. If Jason and Lucia are together, a switch could change who is directly controlled without ending the chase, moving the camera to a distant location or resetting the scene. The interview wording supports this kind of role exchange, but Rockstar has not published the control prompt or camera behaviour.

3. Operating independently
The phrase “go off and cause chaos independently” indicates that the protagonists can also separate. One may continue an activity while the other is somewhere else in Leonida. The statement does not establish whether the player can swap between them instantly, whether the inactive character continues simulated activity, or whether separation is available in every mission and every area. It does establish that the campaign is designed to accommodate more than permanent side-by-side travel.
4. Mission-directed control
Story missions are likely to decide which protagonist is active at particular moments. This is an inference from the pair-focused premise and the fact that Rockstar has not documented unrestricted switching, not a published control specification. A mission may begin with Jason, hand control to Lucia for a connected objective, or require both characters to remain in a coordinated sequence. Treat mission context as an expected constraint until Rockstar demonstrates otherwise.
What a paired sequence could look like
The following example combines only the situations described in current reporting; it is not a leaked mission walkthrough or a confirmed button sequence.

- Change the active role. A prompt or contextual input lets the player focus on Lucia in the passenger seat. Lucia can use her phone while Jason continues driving.
- Respond to danger. During an escape, control can move to the character better positioned for the next task, such as driving or shooting. The pair remain part of one encounter.
- Separate when the activity allows it. After the shared sequence, the protagonists can pursue different activities. The player may follow one character while the other operates elsewhere, subject to whatever mission or world rules Rockstar applies.
- Reconnect through the story. A later objective can bring them back together, making the relationship between shared play and independent play part of the campaign structure.
This model explains the interview language without assuming a particular radial menu, button, cooldown or camera transition.

How this differs from the confirmed facts about GTA V-style switching
GTA V made rapid protagonist changes a familiar part of its design, including a radial character-selection interface. It is tempting to assume GTA 6 simply repeats that system for Jason and Lucia. Rockstar has not said that it does.

The practical conclusion is that GTA 6 may preserve the freedom associated with multiple protagonists while changing when and why control moves between them. Until an official demonstration appears, calling it “the GTA V wheel with two new faces” is speculation.
Can Jason and Lucia split up?
Current reporting says yes in the broad gameplay sense: the player can choose to have the pair go off and cause chaos independently. That supports separate activities, but it does not answer every technical question. Rockstar has not explained whether both characters remain fully active in the background, whether the player can switch between distant locations without a loading transition, or whether one character must be parked safely before the other becomes available.
Separation could serve several design purposes. It can let a player pursue different opportunities around Leonida, create simultaneous objectives in a heist, or make the relationship itself part of mission planning. It could also be restricted to free roam or selected story beats. The phrase “independently” should therefore be read as evidence of a supported play style, not proof of unlimited instant travel between any two points.

Can you play as both characters at once?
“Both at once” can mean two different things. In a shared scene, the reported driving-and-phone example suggests that Jason and Lucia can both be present and useful while the player changes which one receives direct input. That is the strongest supported interpretation.
It does not necessarily mean two people can control them simultaneously in local co-op, nor does it confirm that the player can issue independent commands to both characters. GTA 6 has been announced as a single-player story featuring the pair; no local or online co-operative control feature is established here. Likewise, there is no confirmed system for giving one protagonist a detailed queue of actions while directly controlling the other.

Several specific claims circulate because they sound familiar from earlier games or fit common open-world design patterns. None should be presented as settled GTA 6 information without a Rockstar demonstration or announcement.
- A dedicated Down-button shortcut: no official input has been published.
- A radial switch wheel: GTA V used one, but Rockstar has not confirmed its return.
- Instant, unrestricted free-roam switching: the ability to operate independently does not prove that every switch is instantaneous or available in every location.
- A trust or relationship meter controlling access: no such system has been announced.
- Shared inventory, money or weapons: the reporting does not establish whether Jason and Lucia share resources or maintain separate loadouts.
- Guaranteed background simulation: independent play does not reveal how much activity the inactive protagonist performs without direct control.
- Universal mid-mission switching: story scripting may limit control at key moments.
Keeping these items separate from the confirmed premise prevents a familiar interface from being mistaken for a documented feature.

How to read future gameplay demonstrations
When Rockstar shows more footage, five details will answer most practical questions about switching:
- Context: does the change happen while Jason and Lucia are together, or between distant locations?
- Input: is there a button, menu, hold command or contextual prompt?
- Camera transition: does the view move smoothly, cut immediately or use a loading transition?
- Mission rules: can the player switch freely, or only at marked moments?
- Persistent state: do location, equipment, money and ongoing activities remain separate for each protagonist?
A single trailer may show an impressive handoff without answering all five. Look for repeated examples in official gameplay explanations before treating one scene as a universal rule.
Where GTA 6 is announced to be available
Rockstar’s official listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 Trailer 2 release specifically identifies PlayStation 5 as the capture platform for that footage. These announcements describe the currently listed console versions; they do not confirm a PC launch date or additional editions.

For buyers considering a physical PS5 copy, check the retailer listing for the exact region, edition and release date because those details can differ by market and may change before launch. The platform announcement itself does not establish any special character-switching features for a particular edition.
Bottom line on Jason and Lucia switching
Jason and Lucia are two playable leads in one connected GTA 6 story. The best-supported model lets them travel together, exchange roles during a shared situation and separate to pursue independent chaos. The passenger-seat phone example is meaningful evidence of contextual role exchange, not proof of a specific control scheme. Rockstar has not confirmed a radial wheel, a Down-button shortcut, a cooldown, a trust meter, shared inventory or unrestricted mission switching. Until those details are shown officially, describe the system by what the characters can do together and apart rather than by assuming GTA V’s interface returns.
