How CDNs and DDoS Protection Help Keep Websites Available

CDNs distribute delivery and cache repeat requests; DDoS controls filter traffic at different layers. Together they improve resilience, but cannot guarantee uptime.

A CDN can serve cacheable content from distributed edge locations instead of making every visitor’s request travel to the origin server. DDoS protection can detect or filter attack traffic at network, transport, or application layers. Used together, these services can reduce some of the work that reaches an origin and mitigate some attacks before they disrupt a site. They improve resilience; they do not guarantee that a website will stay online through every attack or failure.

What a CDN does—and what DDoS protection does

A content delivery network (CDN) routes requests through infrastructure distributed across multiple locations. When a requested object is cached at an edge location, the CDN can return it from there rather than fetching it from the origin server, where the website’s content or application is hosted. Amazon Web Services describes CloudFront as a globally distributed service for delivering data and applications. AWS CloudFront documentation

DDoS protection addresses a different problem: a distributed denial-of-service attack attempts to overwhelm a network, service, or application with traffic or requests. Protection may inspect, monitor, or filter traffic at different layers. A CDN can be part of that protective path because it distributes delivery and gives a provider infrastructure at which to mitigate some traffic. But having a CDN is not the same as having every relevant defense configured, and it does not make every request harmless.

The distinction matters when diagnosing an outage. A site might be struggling because the origin is receiving too many requests, because network or transport capacity is under pressure, because the application cannot process a flood of HTTP requests, or because of a failure unrelated to an attack. Different causes require different controls.

How do CDNs protect against DDoS attacks?

They distribute delivery across edge infrastructure

Instead of every visitor connecting directly to one origin, a CDN gives requests a distributed edge layer through which content can be delivered. That distribution can provide a point where provider systems inspect and mitigate some attack traffic. AWS says its mitigation systems inspect traffic at edge locations for CloudFront and Route 53 and mitigate attacks in real time. The scope of protection depends on the service and its configuration; this is not a promise that every attack will be absorbed or that an origin is protected from every route of access. AWS Shield Standard overview

Caching avoids repeated origin fetches for cacheable objects

A cache hit means the edge already has the requested object and can serve it without making a new fetch from the origin. If many users request the same cacheable content, that can prevent those requests from turning into an equal number of origin fetches. The benefit is especially relevant when a surge repeats requests for content that the CDN can cache.

Caching is not a universal shield. Dynamic or uncached requests may still need to reach the origin, and an object that is not available in cache may require a fetch. AWS describes Origin Shield as an additional caching layer that can improve cache-hit ratio and reduce origin load. It is an extra layer in a caching design, not a substitute for application controls or a guarantee of origin availability. Use Amazon CloudFront Origin Shield

They can filter traffic at more than one layer

Network and transport-layer attacks target the infrastructure and communications path. Application-layer attacks, including HTTP request floods, target the ability of a web server or application to handle requests. Infrastructure mitigation and request-level rules address different parts of the problem. AWS describes AWS WAF controls that can allow, block, or monitor requests, alongside separate application-layer mitigation capabilities. Amazon CloudFront FAQs

DNS is another part of the route into a site: it directs users toward a service endpoint. AWS describes CloudFront and Route 53 together as an edge entry path, but DNS configuration is not a replacement for defenses that inspect application requests. A protected endpoint helps only if the site’s traffic actually uses that path.

What is the difference between a CDN and DDoS protection?

Function What it does What it does not establish by itself
CDN delivery Routes users through distributed edge infrastructure and can serve cached content closer to users. AWS CloudFront documentation That every request is cacheable, or that all traffic can avoid the origin.
Caching Serves a cached object without a new origin fetch; an additional cache layer can further reduce origin load. AWS Origin Shield documentation That dynamic or uncached requests will not reach the origin.
Network and transport mitigation Inspects or mitigates infrastructure-layer attack traffic. AWS describes Shield Standard as addressing common network and transport-layer attacks. AWS Shield Standard overview Comprehensive protection against every application-layer attack.
Application request controls Rules can allow, block, or monitor web requests, with separate application-layer mitigation capabilities described by AWS. Amazon CloudFront FAQs That a rule set is automatically appropriate for every application or attack.

In AWS’s service descriptions, Shield Standard is included for AWS customers and addresses common network and transport-layer attacks. That inclusion should not be read as a claim that every HTTP flood or other application-layer attack is automatically handled in the same way. AWS describes AWS WAF as a configurable way to apply request controls; the relevant protections and configuration depend on the service and deployment. How does caching reduce load on an origin server?

Consider a page that includes an image requested by many visitors. Without an effective cache, each request may result in work at the origin. With a cache hit, the edge can return the stored object instead of asking the origin for it again. That can reduce origin fetches and leave the origin with less repeated delivery work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The origin-load benefit depends on what the site serves and how its caching is configured. Static files and other cacheable objects can be served repeatedly from cache; personalized, changing, or otherwise uncached responses may still require origin processing. A high cache-hit ratio describes how often requests are served from cache, not whether the entire application is insulated from traffic surges. AWS says Origin Shield adds a caching layer that can improve cache-hit ratio and reduce origin load. Use Amazon CloudFront Origin Shield

That distinction also affects an attack scenario. If an attack repeatedly requests cacheable objects that are already at the edge, caching may prevent those requests from creating matching origin fetches. If requests are dynamic, uncached, or require application work, caching alone may not stop the origin from being burdened. The CDN’s delivery role and the application’s ability to handle requests must therefore be considered separately.

Can a CDN keep my website online during a DDoS attack?

It can help, but no CDN alone can promise uninterrupted availability. Distributed edge capacity, traffic mitigation, and cache hits can reduce the amount of work reaching an origin or filter some traffic before it arrives. Whether that is enough depends on the attack layer, the traffic pattern, the site’s architecture, the origin’s exposure, application behavior, and configuration.

AWS reported that CloudFront automatically mitigated an HTTP/2 rapid reset event that peaked at over 155 million requests per second between August 28 and August 29, 2023. That figure describes one event as reported by AWS in 2023; it is not an independent measurement of typical attack size, a current norm, or a guarantee that another deployment will receive the same outcome. Availability can also fail for reasons a CDN does not solve, such as an origin or application that cannot serve the requests that still reach it. If users can reach the origin directly rather than through the intended edge path, the CDN’s role in that path may be bypassed. These are reasons to treat CDN delivery, origin design, and attack controls as parts of one architecture rather than as interchangeable products.

How to evaluate a CDN and DDoS setup

There is no universal provider choice or price comparison established here. For a particular site, evaluate the architecture and operational work rather than relying on the label “DDoS protected.” These questions identify what a service is expected to do and what remains the site owner’s responsibility:

  • Which layers are covered? Identify protections for network, transport, and application traffic separately. Do not treat infrastructure-layer coverage as proof of application-layer coverage.
  • Where is traffic inspected and mitigated? Determine whether controls operate at provider edge locations, regional infrastructure, or the origin, and which traffic path they cover.
  • What can be cached? Separate static or repeatable objects from dynamic requests. Understand which requests still need origin processing and how cache behavior affects origin load.
  • Can users bypass the edge? Check whether the origin is exposed to direct access that avoids the CDN. A distributed edge path cannot help with traffic that does not use it.
  • What must your team configure and monitor? Establish who manages request rules, observes traffic, and responds when legitimate requests are blocked or an attack continues.
  • What is included and what is separately charged? Confirm service-specific coverage and costs with the provider. The available AWS descriptions identify included Shield Standard and configurable AWS WAF controls, but do not establish a complete current cost comparison.

Common misunderstandings to avoid

“A CDN prevents DDoS”

That is too broad. A CDN can provide distributed delivery, reduce repeated origin fetches for cached content, and offer an edge point for mitigation. Those capabilities can improve resilience, but neither all traffic nor all attack types are guaranteed to be stopped.

“Cached means the origin is safe”

Cache hits reduce fetches for the cached objects. They do not eliminate origin work for dynamic or uncached requests, nor do they establish that all routes to the origin are protected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Included infrastructure protection covers every web attack”

AWS’s description of Shield Standard is specifically about common network and transport-layer attacks. Application-layer request handling is a separate concern, for which AWS describes configurable request controls and separate mitigation capabilities. AWS Shield Standard overview Amazon CloudFront FAQs

“A large reported mitigation proves every site will stay up”

The AWS-reported 2023 event demonstrates a specific mitigation instance, not a service-level guarantee for every configuration, application, attack, or failure. Judge a design by the protections and traffic paths that actually apply to the site.
