Did Phantom Blade Zero’s Composer Write Boss Music Before the Bosses Were Designed?

Phantom Blade Zero composer Cashieng Bo described a melody carried across piano, classical, and heavy-metal arrangements. A separate director interview says music can inspire a boss, but neither interview confirms this score came before its boss was designed.

Not according to the available interviews. Phantom Blade Zero composer Cashieng Bo explained how one boss encounter keeps its melody recognizable while changing musical style across three phases. S-GAME director Soulframe Liang has separately said music can inspire a boss concept, but neither account establishes that Bo wrote this score before its boss was designed.

What the composer said about the three-phase score

In an interview with Game Up News, Bo described an encounter with three phases and a different score for each. His challenge was to preserve a musical thread through sharply contrasting arrangements. He explained: “At first I told myself, okay, so the melody needs to stay the same, but the style, the music genre has to be completely different. So, piano solo, classical quartet, but with the Chinese flute on top of it so it still feels like a Chinese game, and heavy metal.”

That account is about the musical design: a recurring melody connects piano solo, a classical-quartet treatment with Chinese flute, and heavy metal. It does not say when Bo composed the music relative to the boss’s design. Game Up News’ interview with Cashieng Bo reports the three-phase approach and quotation.

Can music inspire a boss in Phantom Blade Zero?

Yes, music can be one starting point, according to S-GAME CEO and director Soulframe Liang. In an October 8, 2026 interview with Inven Global, Liang said a boss concept might begin with a flower, a prop, an emotion, or a piece of music. He described the finished encounter as a combination of its music, stage, scene, entrance, and fighting style. WCCFtech’s interview with Liang gives the same broad explanation.

This supports the idea that music can help shape a boss. It does not establish that music always comes first, that every boss begins with a score, or that Bo’s three-phase theme was written before its boss was designed. The composer’s musical account and the director’s description of possible design inspirations are related, but they do not confirm that chronology.

Why the distinction matters

“Music can inspire a boss” describes one possible creative starting point. “The composer wrote this boss’s music before the boss was designed” is a specific claim about the order of work on a particular encounter. The interviews support the first; they do not verify the second. The headline’s quoted “Just inspire me” phrasing should therefore not be treated as proof of a confirmed composition timeline.

There is still a clear creative idea in Bo’s description: a recognizable melody can give a multi-phase fight continuity even as its sound changes dramatically. That is a musical strategy, not evidence about whether the music or boss concept came first.

How the music fits the game’s wider design

Epic Games Store describes Phantom Blade Zero as an action RPG drawing on Chinese kung fu and wuxia film, combined with modern pop-cultural elements that S-GAME calls “kungfupunk.” That context helps explain Bo’s stated aim of retaining a Chinese character in the arrangement even as the score moves between classical and heavy-metal styles. Epic Games Store’s developer feature also reports marketing director Julius Li’s estimate that designing a boss fight from scratch through in-game implementation takes roughly one week. That is a reported boss-production estimate, not a schedule for composing music.
