A 2015 study demonstrated a metal-free photocatalyst that uses sunlight to split water through a two-step route involving hydrogen peroxide. Juan Liu and colleagues reported 2.0% overall solar energy conversion efficiency in laboratory testing. That was a research result, not evidence of a commercial hydrogen-production process.
How the photocatalyst makes hydrogen
The material combines carbon nanodots with carbon nitride (C3N4). Rather than splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen in one direct step, the proposed chemistry uses hydrogen peroxide as an intermediate: carbon nitride produces hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide from water, then carbon nanodots help decompose the peroxide back into water and oxygen. The Chemistry World report also says the nanodots increase light absorption. Chemistry World’s 2015 account describes this as a tandem reaction.

The approach is photocatalysis: a light-absorbing catalyst drives the chemistry. The 2015 report contrasted this with photoelectrolysis, where a photovoltaic cell supplies voltage to drive water splitting. A powdered catalyst suspended in water could offer a simpler arrangement, but that potential simplicity does not by itself establish practical performance at industrial scale.
What the 2015 paper measured
The paper, published by Juan Liu and colleagues in Science, reported an overall solar energy conversion efficiency of 2.0%. It also reported quantum efficiencies at specific wavelength bands. These are different metrics: the overall figure concerns conversion under solar illumination, while the quantum-efficiency figures are tied to the stated wavelengths.

The authors’ abstract describes the material as a metal-free carbon nanodot–carbon nitride nanocomposite for photocatalytic solar water splitting. The abstract and publication details are available through the PubMed record for the paper, “Water splitting. Metal-free efficient photocatalyst for stable visible water splitting via a two-electron pathway,” Science 347 (6225), 970–974 (2015), DOI 10.1126/science.aaa3145.
What “stable for 200 days” means
The study reported stability over 200 recycling runs across 200 days; the news report said the catalyst showed no degradation over that period. This is a laboratory result under the paper’s test conditions. It is not a guarantee of 200 days of uninterrupted operation in an outdoor installation, nor a commercial service-life figure.

Why the hydrogen-cost figures need context
Chemistry World reported two distinct figures. Co-author Yeshayahu Lifshitz said the cost at the then-current performance was “only about $6” per kilogram of hydrogen. The report does not spell out the full economic assumptions behind that estimate, so it should be read as an attributed 2015 statement rather than an independently verified or current production cost.

The demonstrated catalyst’s reported overall efficiency was 2.0%, so the $2.30/kg estimate depended on improving performance beyond the reported experiment. Neither figure is a measured cost from a commercial hydrogen plant. Chemistry World’s report discusses the estimates, and a Science digital excerpt provides further context for the paper and modeled cost.

- 1. Electrical part: motor with wind shoulder, ammeter, voltmeter.
- 2. Ammonia fuel cell.Hydrogen's electrons travel from the anode to the cathode through an external circuit, generating an electric current. At the cathode, the electrons, protons, and oxygen in the air combine to produce water, which is the main by-product of the fuel cell.
- 3. PEM (proton exchange) water electrolyzer.Gaseous hydrogen is sent to the anode of the membrane, and air is sent to the cathode. The hydrogen atoms are stripped of electrons on the anode side, and the positively charged protons pass through the membrane to reach the cathode. In order for this reaction to occur, a platinum catalyst must be used.
- 4. The two proton exchange membrane electrodes in the organic base and the presenter are 35mm*35mm. Experimental steps. Add deionized water to the water level in the PEM water electrolyzer. The amount of water should not be too much to prevent water from flowing into the battery. After adding water, connect the hydrogen gas outlet on the water electrolyzer to the hydrogen gas inlet on the electrical energy with a gas pipe.
- 5.Then connect the 6V-12V DC power supply to the positive and negative wiring of the water electrolyzer part, and connect the transportation line of the electrical part to the electric energy after 2-3 minutes, the small motor starts to work, and the current is displayed on the current and voltmeter. Positive value.
What the study does—and does not—establish
The result showed that a metal-free carbon nanodot–carbon nitride system could produce hydrogen through visible-light photocatalysis in laboratory conditions, with hydrogen peroxide serving as a reaction intermediate. It did not establish that the method became a deployed or commercially competitive hydrogen-production process. The figures should be compared with other routes only when the efficiency metric, test conditions, stability duration, materials, and economic assumptions are made comparable.
The 2015 article also quoted Steve Dunn of Queen Mary University of London calling the material “a complete game changer.” That was an individual’s assessment at the time, not a finding that the technology had achieved commercial adoption.
