TIN Comply announced two free browser-based tools for businesses preparing information returns for the IRS Information Returns Intake System (IRIS): a checker for IRIS-format files and a converter for legacy FIRE files. The IRS says FIRE submissions end November 19, 2026, at 3 p.m. ET, and current FIRE users must move to IRIS for tax-year 2026 returns during the 2027 filing season. The tools’ features and privacy assurances below are claims from TIN Comply’s October 9, 2026 announcement, not independently tested findings.
What the two TIN Comply tools do
TIN Comply says both tools are available at no charge from its tools page, without an account or login. The announcement says the tools run JavaScript in the user’s browser and read files on the user’s computer rather than uploading or storing them. Those are vendor-reported privacy claims, not an independent security assessment.

IRIS 1099 File Checker
The checker is intended for files already formatted for IRIS. TIN Comply says it accepts Taxpayer Portal CSV files and Application to Application (A2A) XML, checks them against the relevant tax year’s IRS IRIS business rules, the A2A schema, and portal-template formatting, then reports errors and possible fixes. The company says it supports tax years 2022 through 2026 and flags the portal’s 250-row upload limit and A2A’s 100 MB transmission limit; the 250-row figure and supported-year range are product specifications from the announcement.

Pub 1220 to IRIS Converter
The converter is intended for legacy files prepared for the IRS Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) system using Publication 1220. TIN Comply says it reads editions from 2022 through 2025 and produces IRIS A2A XML and portal CSV. The announcement says the tool detects an edition from file records, asks the user to confirm it, and stops rather than guessing if evidence conflicts. It also says the converter checks its output and reports field-mapping decisions and fields without a direct counterpart.

When FIRE ends and who needs to transition
The IRS’s IR-2026-99 notice, dated August 24, 2026, sets November 19, 2026, at 3 p.m. Eastern Time as the last time to submit through FIRE. The IRS says current FIRE users must use IRIS for tax-year 2026 information returns during the 2027 filing season. This is a transition for information-return filing; it does not mean that every business must use TIN Comply’s tools.

The IRS says filers submitting 10 or more information returns generally must e-file for tax years beginning in 2023. Its count includes Forms W-2, which are filed with the Social Security Administration. Confirm which returns and filing obligations apply to your organization using the IRS’s current guidance.
Choose an IRIS filing route
The IRS offers two IRIS routes: the Taxpayer Portal and A2A. The IRS IRIS filing guidance says the portal is an online filing option, while A2A supports system-to-system transmission and accepts files up to 100 MB. IRS Topic 801 describes the portal as a free way to file information returns for tax year 2022 or later, with no special software required for portal use: IRS Topic 801.

| Route | What it involves | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Taxpayer Portal | Use the IRS online portal and its CSV template. IRS says no special software is required for portal filing. | Organizations that can prepare and upload portal-format files within the applicable limits. |
| A2A | Transmit XML files, with a maximum transmission size of 100 MB according to IRS guidance. A2A users must apply for an IRIS A2A Transmitter Control Code, obtain an API Client ID and schema package, and complete Assurance Testing System transmissions before production filing. | Organizations integrating filing into their own systems or handling workflows suited to system-to-system submission. The IRS also allows use of third-party software or services for A2A. |
The IRS publishes versioned schema and business rules, which may coexist and can be updated. Its IRIS schema and business rules index lists tax-year 2026 v1.2 as available in the Secure Object Repository on September 24, 2026, with production in January 2027. Check the IRS release that applies to your filing before relying on a file checker or preparing production transmissions.
How to use the tools in a careful workflow
- Identify your filing route. Decide whether you will file through the Taxpayer Portal or A2A. If choosing A2A, complete the IRS access, schema, and testing prerequisites before production filing.
- Prepare the appropriate input. Use the checker for an IRIS Portal CSV or A2A XML. Use the converter for a FIRE file based on a supported Pub 1220 edition, according to TIN Comply’s announcement.
- Review the tool’s findings. Address reported format or rule issues and inspect the converter’s mapping decisions and fields without direct counterparts. Confirm any edition the converter asks you to verify.
- Check against current IRS requirements. Compare the file with the current IRIS schema, business rules, and portal template for the tax year and route you are using.
- Review and submit through IRIS. Validate the underlying return data yourself, submit using the selected IRS route, and confirm the IRS accepts the filing. A tool’s “checked” output does not establish that a return has been filed or accepted.
What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The announcement describes tools for file preparation, conversion, and checks. It does not establish that a file is accurate as a tax return, that an IRS submission will be accepted, or that the vendor’s privacy claims have been independently verified. The tools may help surface formatting and mapping problems before submission, but filers remain responsible for the return and for using the correct, current IRS specifications.
