CISS Effect Observed in an Isolated Molecule: What the 2023 Study Found

A 2023 experiment reported chirality-dependent EPR signals during electron transfer through a molecular bridge, without attaching the molecules to a solid substrate.

In 2023, researchers reported evidence that electron transfer through a chiral molecule can depend on electron spin even when the molecule is not attached to a solid electrode or substrate. They triggered electron transfer with a laser pulse and tracked the resulting state using time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The finding supports an isolated-molecule contribution to chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS); it does not settle the effect’s mechanism or demonstrate a practical device.

What is the CISS effect?

Chirality-induced spin selectivity, or CISS, describes spin-selective behavior associated with electrons moving through chiral molecular systems. A chiral molecule and its mirror-image counterpart are called enantiomers. The 2023 study asked whether the spin-dependent signal could be observed in a molecular system without attaching it to a solid surface.

That distinction matters because earlier CISS experiments had largely examined molecules on metal or semiconductor surfaces. An observation without a solid electrode or substrate provides evidence that surface attachment is not required for the effect in every studied system. It does not show that surfaces played no role in prior experiments, or that all CISS behavior has the same origin.

How did the researchers test for spin selectivity?

A molecule that transfers an electron

The team led by Michael Wasielewski and co-led by Stefano Carretta studied a molecular assembly with three parts: a photoresponsive electron donor, a chiral bridge, and an electron acceptor. A short laser pulse excited the donor and initiated electron transfer through the bridge toward the acceptor.

Following the charge-separated state

Researchers monitored the charge-separated state produced by that transfer with time-resolved EPR. They oriented the molecules in a liquid crystal at low temperature and compared measurements made with the applied magnetic field in opposite directions. This let them examine how the EPR response changed with the bridge’s chirality and the field direction.

What did the comparisons show?

Comparison Reported result What it supports
Chiral bridge enantiomers, with the magnetic-field direction reversed The reported EPR spectra differed in the chiral cases. The measured electron-transfer signal depended on chirality under the experiment’s conditions.
Achiral-bridge control The corresponding change was not observed. The control supports interpreting the chiral-case response as related to molecular chirality rather than as a general field-reversal response.

The control strengthens the interpretation, but an EPR spectral difference is evidence about this particular system and measurement—not a universal demonstration that every chiral molecule filters spins in the same way.

Why call it an isolated-molecule result?

Here, “isolated” means the molecules were not attached to a metal or semiconductor surface or solid electrode for the measurement. It does not mean a single molecule was measured entirely alone: the experiment used molecules oriented in a liquid crystal. The result therefore addresses whether a solid substrate is necessary for the observed signal in this setup, not whether the molecules were removed from all surrounding material.

What the study does—and does not—establish

What the evidence supports

  • A chiral molecular bridge was associated with a different EPR response when the magnetic-field direction was reversed.
  • The corresponding change was not reported for the achiral-bridge control.
  • The finding supports the view that CISS can include an intrinsic contribution from electron motion through molecules, rather than requiring attachment to a solid interface in every case.

What remains open

  • The experiment does not by itself resolve the broader physical mechanism behind CISS.
  • It does not show that all CISS observations are independent of surfaces or interfaces.
  • It does not demonstrate a working application, device performance, or a quantified practical benefit.

Carretta described the result as showing that CISS is “an intrinsic property of electron motion within the molecules themselves, independent of the involvement of interfaces or the attachment to substrates.” That is his interpretation of this study, not a settled consensus about the full mechanism.

Could the finding lead to applications?

Potential relevance to biology, quantum information, and energy has been suggested, as has a possible connection to circularly polarized OLEDs. These are prospective areas, not technologies demonstrated by the experiment. Wasielewski said the work “could have important implications for biology, quantum information, and energy”; the statement points to possible significance rather than a measured application.
