How Can You Compare Polymarket Prices With Chainlink TWAP?

Polymarket order books show prices for specific outcome tokens; Chainlink TWAPs describe an underlying asset over a report window. Learn how to compare them without confusing their meaning, timing, or settlement relevance.

Polymarket order-book data and a Chainlink time-weighted average price (TWAP) measure different things. A Polymarket book shows bids and asks for a particular Yes or No outcome token; a Chainlink report gives a price for an underlying asset under that feed or stream’s methodology. You can align them for analysis, but neither is a substitute for the other—and a price gap alone does not establish an arbitrage opportunity.

What each data source tells you

Source What it represents Time basis What it does not establish
Polymarket CLOB Orders and market-side prices for a specific outcome token, identified by its token ID. A book snapshot describes the available market state; a price observation or trade history is a different kind of record. A snapshot or update reflects the book at its recorded observation time. Preserve the timestamp and any sequence or update metadata the response provides. It is not an oracle report for the underlying asset, nor does a displayed order prove a trade occurred.
Chainlink Data Streams Signed reports for a selected stream. The relevant report may include timing fields and, where applicable, a TWAP observation window. Use the report’s own timestamp and window, not just the time your collector received it. It does not report the Polymarket token’s price or by itself determine how a specific market resolves.
Chainlink Data Feeds Aggregated data published on-chain through feeds. Use the feed’s reported data and timing information; monitor for delays, outages, and unusual events. A feed value is not automatically the market’s designated settlement source.

Polymarket’s data guide separates market and event metadata from CLOB data: metadata provides the outcome token IDs, while CLOB requests use the relevant token ID. The CLOB documentation describes off-chain matching and ordering with matched trades settling on-chain using signed orders. That distinction matters: a displayed book is evidence of market state, not evidence that an order filled.

Chainlink’s Data Streams documentation describes signed reports and REST, WebSocket, and SDK access, and links to report-timestamp details, including TWAP streams. Its Data Feeds overview describes aggregation and on-chain publication. These are separate products and data paths; choose the one that matches the analysis you intend to perform.

Define the comparison before collecting data

First write down what you are trying to compare. For example, you might track the market price of a Yes token while observing a Chainlink TWAP for an asset mentioned in the market question. The token price can be interpreted as a market-implied view of the outcome, subject to liquidity and trading frictions. The TWAP is an average of an underlying asset price over a defined interval. They have different units of meaning even if both are represented as numbers between zero and one or use the same currency after conversion.

  • Market: record the exact Polymarket market and its resolution wording.
  • Outcome: select Yes or No explicitly and preserve that token’s ID; do not treat the two sides as interchangeable observations.
  • Underlying asset: identify the asset and the Chainlink stream or feed that actually corresponds to it.
  • Time window: specify the TWAP interval and the book observation or update time you will compare against it.
  • Resolution: identify the market’s stated resolution source and rules before treating an oracle value as relevant to settlement.

The exact Chainlink source and boundary logic used to resolve a Polymarket market are market-specific. The sources cited here do not establish those mechanics for every market, so verify the particular market’s wording and designated source rather than assuming the Chainlink series is its settlement rule.

Build a timestamp-aware data join

  1. Resolve the market metadata. Find the market record and retrieve the Yes and No token IDs from its CLOB token identifiers. Keep the market identifier and outcome label alongside each token ID. Polymarket’s guide describes the distinction between Gamma metadata and CLOB observations.
  2. Collect the book or price observations. Query or subscribe to the relevant CLOB data for the selected token. Store bid and ask levels, the observation timestamp, and any available sequence or update metadata. If you also use historical prices or trades, store those as separate records rather than treating them as book snapshots.
  3. Collect the Chainlink report or feed value. Select the stream or feed for the underlying asset. Retain the report or feed identifier, price fields, and native timing details. Data Streams supports REST, WebSocket, and SDK access; preserve the report’s time information rather than replacing it with local receipt time.
  4. Normalize times without erasing their meaning. Convert timestamps to a consistent time zone such as UTC, but keep the original timestamp fields and identify what each represents: book update, report observation, report window, or local receipt. A local polling time is not proof that the source data describes that instant.
  5. Join only compatible observations. Compare a book observation with a Chainlink report only after checking that the report’s TWAP interval and the book timestamp are understood. If the relevant windows do not overlap or the report is stale, label the comparison accordingly rather than silently pairing the nearest values.
  6. Keep provenance with the result. Each derived row should retain its market and token IDs, Chainlink stream or feed identifier, source timestamps, TWAP interval, and the method used to select the paired observations.

Interpret prices with spread and depth

A midpoint calculated from the best bid and ask can be a convenient reference, but it is not necessarily an executable price. The gap between bid and ask shows the spread; the size available at each level shows how much could be traded at those prices before the book changes or deeper levels are reached. For analysis, keep the midpoint, best bid, best ask, spread, and relevant depth together instead of presenting a midpoint alone.

When a Polymarket outcome price and a Chainlink TWAP appear to diverge, consider several explanations before drawing a conclusion:

  • The two values describe different concepts: a market’s outcome token versus an underlying asset price.
  • The book and report refer to different instants or time windows.
  • The book is thin or wide-spread, making its midpoint a weak estimate of an executable market price.
  • The market’s resolution wording, boundary conditions, or designated source do not match the Chainlink series being observed.
  • There may be genuine differences in market expectations or trading conditions, but the data alone does not establish why they exist.

Therefore, treat a divergence as a signal to investigate timing, liquidity, and definitions—not as proof of a mispricing or a risk-free trade.

Plan for stale data and feed interruptions

Track data freshness explicitly. A book can change while a collector is polling, and reports or feeds can be delayed or unavailable. Flag gaps, stale timestamps, and out-of-order observations; do not carry the last value forward without marking it as carried. Chainlink recommends proxy contracts for on-chain Data Feed consumers so aggregator changes do not interrupt consumers, and recommends monitoring and safeguards for delays, outages, extreme events, and malicious third-party activity. Those operational concerns are also relevant when interpreting an analysis built from feed values.

A useful output should make the provenance visible: market and outcome token, underlying asset, book time, Chainlink report or feed time and window, spread and depth, and the market resolution source. Without those fields, a chart can make two unrelated values look directly comparable.
