There is no evidence-backed universal winner for Indian engineering students. Choose Arduino Cloud for guided classroom work, Blynk for low-code dashboard prototyping, ThingsBoard for configurable dashboards and deployment choices, Node-RED for flow-based integration, or Azure IoT Hub for cloud messaging coursework. The right fit depends on your board, coding goals, course requirements, and willingness to set up and maintain services.
How to choose an IoT platform for a student project
Start with the project and the skills you want to learn, rather than a league table. A web dashboard does not replace the physical project: you still need compatible hardware and sensors, and you may need to write and upload firmware.

- Check your board first. Arduino Cloud describes support for compatible Arduino and ESP-based boards, as well as third-party devices using Python, MicroPython, JavaScript, or Node-RED. Compatibility depends on the particular board and setup; do not assume every board or sensor will work.
- Match the platform to the learning goal. Guided lessons and low-code dashboards can help with a first prototype. Device messaging, flow programming, deployment, and cloud architecture involve different skills and setup work.
- Check what you need to see or control. Decide whether the project needs live readings, historical data, dashboards, device controls, or collaboration among classmates. The available plans and features differ.
- Account for deployment work. A managed service and a self-hosted or edge setup are not interchangeable choices. Running and maintaining software can be part of the learning, but it also adds work for students and instructors.
- Check local terms before committing. The platform pages reviewed do not establish a like-for-like cost comparison for India. Confirm current limits, taxes, institutional or student rates, connectivity costs, and where data will be stored.
Ten candidates, with a clear distinction between documented fit and open questions
This is a practical shortlist, not a ranked top ten. Official information available for these candidates is uneven: some have documented features that support a specific student use, while others need more verification before they can be compared fairly.

Which documented option fits each learning goal?
For structured classroom work: Arduino Cloud
Arduino Cloud has the clearest documented classroom functions among these options. Arduino’s School plan lists shared spaces with role permissions, a course library, and Google Classroom integration, alongside plan-specific limits. Arduino says the platform is suitable for higher education. Arduino’s Cloud for Schools FAQ also makes the hands-on requirement explicit: “You need hardware and some sensors to build different projects, write the code and then upload it to the board.” The lessons, tutorials, and templates support the work, but the service does not remove the need to build the physical project.

Arduino also documents the Explore IoT Kit Rev2 as a physical education kit containing an MKR IoT Carrier Rev2, MKR WiFi 1010, sensors, and actuators. The School-plan page describes additional content as requiring a paid plan, so distinguish that from what is included with the kit itself.
For a fast dashboard prototype: Blynk
Blynk is a candidate when you want to prototype mobile or web dashboards without building every interface from scratch. Its low-code approach can reduce interface work, but the device still needs firmware, and the amount of code depends on the project. Treat the stated five-device, one-user free plan as a page-described offer, not a guarantee of current or India-specific terms.
Rank #2

For configurable dashboards and deployment practice: ThingsBoard
ThingsBoard is worth evaluating if you want dashboards and integrations while choosing between cloud and self-managed deployment. That choice changes the assignment: self-management can expose students to deployment and maintenance, but requires them or their instructor to handle that work. The pricing page reviewed lists a $0/month plan with 100 devices and 100 assets; those figures describe that page’s plan and do not establish a complete project cost or India-specific rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor event-driven integration and edge workflows: Node-RED
Node-RED is a good category fit when the learning goal is connecting events, devices, and services through flows. The OpenJS Foundation describes it running on hardware such as Raspberry Pi or in the cloud. Because it is a flow-programming tool rather than a complete managed IoT cloud service, plan separately for device connectivity, any other services your project needs, and deployment maintenance.

For cloud messaging and architecture: Azure IoT Hub
Azure IoT Hub fits coursework focused on how devices exchange messages with cloud services. Microsoft’s documentation covers device-to-cloud and cloud-to-device communication, telemetry routing, monitoring, and authentication. If the assignment mainly calls for a quick visual dashboard, check what else must be added rather than assuming IoT Hub alone supplies the whole interface.
What the available plan figures do—and do not—tell you
The two explicit free-plan figures in the material reviewed are not an apples-to-apples comparison: Blynk’s pricing page describes up to five devices and one user, while ThingsBoard’s pricing page lists 100 devices and 100 assets on a $0/month plan. Different products count different resources, and those figures say nothing by themselves about data retention, feature access, hosting effort, or total cost for a class project. Confirm current limits and terms directly with each provider before designing around them.
Rank #4
Likewise, no like-for-like India student price, tax, discount, data-residency, or institutional purchasing comparison is established here. Include board and sensor costs, internet connectivity, and any hosting or service charges in your project plan.
A practical selection sequence
- Write down your hardware. Identify the exact board, sensors, and connectivity you already have, then check the platform’s current compatibility documentation.
- Define the learning outcome. Choose whether the main task is guided coding, dashboard prototyping, flow integration, deployment practice, or cloud messaging.
- List the required data features. Specify whether you need live views, historical readings, device controls, collaboration, or role permissions.
- Choose who will operate the service. Decide whether the class should use a managed cloud service or learn to deploy and maintain part of the stack.
- Check the terms for your location and course. Verify current plan limits, student or institutional eligibility, taxes, data location, and recurring costs before relying on a free-tier figure.
What cannot be concluded from this shortlist
The available material does not establish a reproducible ranking of ten platforms, which one is most used by Indian engineering students, or which produces better learning outcomes. It also does not provide enough official detail here to compare current ThingSpeak or AWS IoT Core features, or enough official evidence to recommend KiwisIoT. Those are reasons to verify a candidate against a specific assignment, not grounds to assume it is unsuitable.
