To make an iPhone easier to navigate, set up Apple’s built-in Assistive Access and choose a focused set of apps, a Rows or Grid layout, and controls suited to the person who will use it. Apple describes the feature as intended for people with cognitive disabilities, so age alone does not determine whether it is a good fit. Consider the individual’s needs and let them try the layout and apps where possible.
What Assistive Access changes
Assistive Access is a simplified iPhone experience, not a separate app or device. It presents a selected set of tasks with larger onscreen items and focused features. Apple describes it as “a distinctive iOS experience that makes it easier for people with cognitive disabilities to use iPhone independently.” A senior or child may find it useful if this more focused interface matches their needs; it is not automatically suitable for everyone in either age group. How do I make an iPhone easier for a senior or child to use?
Set up the iPhone itself first. A trusted supporter, such as a family member or caregiver, can help with the choices and setup. They may need the user’s account details or device passcode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the setup screen. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Access, tap Set Up Assistive Access, then tap Continue.
- Check the Apple Account. If an account is signed in, make sure the one shown belongs to the person who will use Assistive Access.
- Choose a layout. Select Rows for a text-oriented list or Grid for larger items that emphasize pictures and icons. If possible, let the intended user try both and choose what they recognize and navigate most comfortably.
- Choose apps around daily tasks. Add only the apps the person needs. Apple identifies Calls, Camera, Magnifier, Messages, Music, Photos, and Apple TV as apps designed for Assistive Access. Other iPhone apps can also be added, but appear in their original design rather than an Assistive Access version.
- Set access and recovery options. Check the device passcode and, where supported and useful, Face ID or Touch ID. Create a separate Assistive Access passcode for entering, exiting, and changing settings. Set up a recovery Apple Account if appropriate.
- Start Assistive Access. Tap Start Using Assistive Access and enter its passcode.
Apple’s setup guide has the current walkthrough: Set up Assistive Access on iPhone.

Rows or Grid: which layout should you choose?
| Layout | What it emphasizes | Consider it if |
|---|---|---|
| Rows | A list-style presentation | The person finds a text-oriented list easier to scan and follow. |
| Grid | Larger items with more emphasis on pictures and icons | The person recognizes images or icons more readily than text labels. |
Neither layout is universally easier. Try the person’s usual tasks in each format, and use their preference as the guide.
Which apps should you include?
Start with the tasks the person actually does—such as calling family, taking or viewing photos, or sending messages—and include the apps needed for those tasks. Apple’s Assistive Access versions are designed to offer a focused experience in Calls, Camera, Magnifier, Messages, Music, Photos, and Apple TV. If you add another iPhone app, it remains in its original design, so check whether its controls are manageable for the user.

For someone who finds text difficult, the Grid layout’s image-and-icon emphasis may be worth trying. In Messages, Apple also describes options such as an emoji-only keyboard or sending a video selfie. These are choices to explore with the person using the phone, not guaranteed substitutes for every communication need.

Passcodes, recovery, and leaving the mode
The Assistive Access passcode is separate from the iPhone’s device passcode. Keep the setup and recovery details somewhere the trusted supporter can access: Apple says that if the Assistive Access passcode is forgotten and no recovery Apple Account was set up, the iPhone must be reset.
To exit Assistive Access, triple-click the side button on an iPhone with Face ID, or the Home button on other models. Choose Exit Assistive Access and enter its passcode. Exiting is also necessary when a supporter needs to download a new app from the App Store.

What can you adjust later—and what are the limits?
Assistive Access settings can be tailored after setup. Apple describes options for notification badges, Siri, visibility of the battery level and date and time, accessibility shortcuts, and other system preferences. While Assistive Access is active, some settings—including brightness, volume, and text size—can be changed from its settings screen. For schedules and limits, Apple directs users to Screen Time rather than Assistive Access settings. See Change Assistive Access settings on iPhone.
