You can donate cryptocurrency directly to a charity that accepts it or contribute eligible assets to a donor-advised fund and recommend grants from there. Before transferring anything, confirm the exact asset, network, instructions, fees, and receipt process with the recipient. In the United States, tax treatment depends on your circumstances, including how long you held the asset; a donation is not automatically deductible.
Choose a route before you send
Digital-asset donation procedures are set by the receiving organization. Acceptance of one coin or token does not mean the organization accepts another, or that it supports every network on which an asset can be sent. Ask the intended recipient whether it accepts your specific asset and network, and use only the official instructions it gives you.

| Route | How it works | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Direct donation to a charity | You transfer an accepted digital asset using the charity’s donation process. | Whether the charity currently accepts your asset and network, its transfer instructions, any minimum or approval steps, fees, conversion and custody practices, and how it issues acknowledgments. Procedures vary by charity. America’s Charities describes fundraising tools available to its members through The Giving Block, but that does not establish that a particular charity currently uses the service. |
| Contribution to a donor-advised fund | You contribute an eligible asset to a sponsoring charity’s fund, then recommend grants to eligible charities under the sponsor’s rules. | Whether the sponsor accepts your asset, its acceptance review and transfer process, costs, and grant eligibility and timing. For example, Fidelity Charitable’s cryptocurrency page describes its process for certain cryptocurrencies, while its Giving Account guide describes recommending grants to eligible charities. These terms are specific to that sponsor. |
| Cash or another accepted asset | You give cash or a different asset the charity or fund accepts instead of acquiring cryptocurrency for the donation. | Whether this route better suits your goal. The cited sources do not quantify the costs of acquiring crypto or establish that doing so is preferable. |
Before choosing, ask about the supported coin or token and network, contribution minimums and approval, fees or spread, custody and liquidation timing, receipt and tax-document procedures, and—if using a donor-advised fund—grant flexibility. Comparable fees and operating terms are not established across providers, so obtain the details directly from the organization.
Confirm the transfer details and reduce mistakes
A transfer to the wrong address, with the wrong asset, or over an unsupported network may be difficult or impossible to recover. Fidelity Charitable, for example, warns donors to follow its own process and send only the named currency to the unique address it provides using the associated network. It also cautions against sending wrapped or staked assets, using a different network or Layer 2, or obscuring an asset’s origin. Those are sponsor-specific instructions, not universal donation rules; follow the recipient’s directions for your transfer.

- Verify the destination. Reach the donation instructions through the charity or fund sponsor’s official website or a contact channel you have independently confirmed.
- Check asset and network compatibility. Match the exact asset and network named in the recipient’s instructions. Do not assume a similarly named token or another network is supported.
- Review conditions before initiating. Confirm any minimum, approval step, fee, conversion process, custody arrangement, and expected acknowledgment with the recipient.
- Follow the recipient’s transfer procedure. Use the unique address and other steps the organization provides. Fidelity Charitable suggests a small test contribution for its process; ask your own recipient whether it recommends one.
- Save the transaction record. Retain the transaction identifier, date, asset and amount, wallet or account records, the recipient’s instructions, and its acknowledgment. The IRS discusses using unique identifiers or other records to establish information about the particular virtual-currency units held in an account, wallet, or address.
Understand the US tax rules before claiming a deduction
The IRS says, “If you donate virtual currency to a charitable organization described in Internal Revenue Code Section 170(c), you will not recognize income, gain, or loss from the donation.” That statement describes the donation itself; it does not guarantee that every donor qualifies for a deduction or establish the amount any particular donor may claim.
According to the IRS FAQ on virtual currency transactions, the general deduction treatment differs by holding period:

- If you held it for one year or less, the deduction is generally the lesser of your basis or the fair market value at contribution.
Your eligibility and deduction depend on the applicable rules and your facts. Keep records supporting the holding period, basis, value, and contribution, and consult a qualified tax professional if you need advice about your return.

Acknowledgment and reporting documents
- Deduction of $250 or more: The IRS says you must obtain a contemporaneous written acknowledgment when claiming the deduction. The charity may assist by providing it.
- Deduction over $5,000: The IRS says the charity generally must sign Form 8283 to acknowledge receipt when you present the form for signature.
- Later disposal by the charity: In some cases, a charity that disposes of donated property within three years of receipt must file Form 8282 and provide a copy to the donor.
These thresholds and obligations are described by the IRS; they do not replace checking the instructions for your specific filing and donation.

If you are choosing whether to acquire crypto for a gift
Do not buy a digital asset solely on the assumption that donating it will produce a better tax result. Compare the cost and risk of acquiring the asset with donating cash or another asset the recipient accepts. The sources cited here do not quantify purchase costs or establish that acquiring cryptocurrency for a charitable gift is advantageous.
If you already own the asset, first confirm that your intended charity or fund accepts that exact asset and network. If it does not, ask whether it accepts another asset you hold, or consider a different recipient or donation route rather than sending an unsupported transfer.

For charities considering digital-asset donations
A charity evaluating acceptance can examine donation-processing services or a donor-advised-fund sponsor that accepts digital assets. A reference to a fundraising tool is only a lead, not confirmation of current availability: America’s Charities describes discounted access to The Giving Block’s tools for member organizations, but a charity should verify whether it is a member, whether it currently uses the service, and the terms that would apply.
Before enabling a route, establish which assets and networks are accepted; how transfers are approved, held, converted, and accounted for; what fees apply; and how receipts and donor acknowledgments are handled. Confirm these details with the provider and communicate the charity’s current instructions clearly to donors. Acceptance and operating terms can vary, and no provider’s availability or terms should be assumed for a particular organization.
