Miners use specialized hardware to search for a valid proof; other network participants can verify that proof quickly. Mining helps order Bitcoin transactions and makes rewriting older history increasingly costly. It is not guaranteed income, and Ethereum mining is no longer active on Ethereum’s main network.
What Bitcoin miners actually do
When someone sends bitcoin, the transaction is signed with the sender’s private key and broadcast to the network. A mining node selects valid transactions and assembles them into a candidate block. It then prepares a block header containing information about the candidate block and the preceding block.

Bitcoin’s developer guide describes an 80-byte block header. Mining hardware repeatedly hashes header data, changing inputs as needed, to search for a result below the network’s target. A valid result is proof that the miner performed the required work. The miner broadcasts the block, and other nodes independently check the proof and the block’s transactions. Bitcoin Developer Guide: Mining
This is sometimes compared to a lottery: miners compete, and a miner’s chance of finding a block depends on its share of the total mining work. The analogy captures uncertainty, but mining is not arbitrary coin creation. The work is tied to proposing a block and establishing transaction order. A successful block’s reward consists of the protocol-defined subsidy and the transaction fees included in it, subject to current network rules.

Why mining helps secure Bitcoin’s history
Each block refers to the block before it, linking Bitcoin’s transaction history. If someone tries to replace an earlier block, they must redo the work for that block and then catch up with the work added by subsequent blocks. The farther back a transaction is, the more work a would-be history rewrite must overcome. Bitcoin Developer Guide: Block Chain
Finding a valid proof requires repeated computation, while checking a proposed proof is comparatively straightforward for other nodes. This difference lets the network make block production costly without requiring every participant to repeat the miner’s search.

How mining hardware fits in
Bitcoin mining is specialized and competitive. The Bitcoin Developer Guide describes application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) hardware in the mining workflow. A regular home computer is not a realistic way to compete for Bitcoin block rewards; mining software coordinates the work, while ASICs perform the repeated hashing.

A real setup may also require suitable electrical service, network connectivity, monitoring, and ventilation or cooling. Mining machines convert electrical input into heat and sound, so power capacity and the location’s ability to manage heat and noise matter alongside the device’s advertised hash rate.

Solo mining or joining a pool?
Solo mining means operating independently and keeping the proceeds of any block you find. The trade-off is highly uncertain timing: with a small share of total network hash power, a miner may wait a long time between rewards.
A pool combines participants’ work and tracks submitted “shares,” which show that a participant contributed mining work. If the pool finds a valid block, it receives the proceeds and distributes them according to its payout method. Pool arrangements can make payouts more regular than solo mining, but the pool’s fees, payout threshold, distribution rules, custody, and withdrawal policies affect what participants receive. Pool participation does not guarantee a profit. Bitcoin Developer Guide: Mining

Before joining, read the pool’s current fee schedule and payout terms, understand who controls custody and withdrawals, and check the operator’s jurisdiction. Terms vary by pool; the mining mechanism alone does not establish which pool is suitable.
What determines whether mining is profitable?
There is no universal electricity-rate cutoff or guaranteed return. A useful estimate must compare expected proceeds with the full cost and operating conditions of a particular setup. Include:

These inputs change over time and vary by location and device. A meaningful calculation needs current device specifications, network data, asset prices, pool terms, local electricity costs, installation requirements, taxes, and applicable local rules. Without those inputs, a single profitability figure would be misleading. Ethereum’s historical mining guide also identifies equipment, electricity, pool fees, ventilation, energy monitoring, and wiring as possible cost categories. Ethereum.org: Mining
Why the word “mining” does not apply to every cryptocurrency
Mining refers to proof-of-work systems; it is not a general name for every way a cryptocurrency network is secured. Ethereum switched off proof-of-work in 2022 and now uses proof-of-stake, in which validators secure the network using staked assets. ETH staking is not mining, and readers cannot mine ETH on Ethereum mainnet. Ethereum.org describes its former mining documentation as historical. Ethereum.org: Mining · Ethereum.org: Proof-of-work
What to know about mining’s energy use
Proof-of-work consumes electricity in the competition to produce blocks. Ethereum.org characterizes proof-of-work as more energy-hungry than Ethereum’s proof-of-stake system, but that comparison does not supply a current Bitcoin-wide electricity or emissions figure. Avoid treating an old estimate for another network, or a historical Ethereum comparison, as a current Bitcoin statistic. A responsible network-wide figure needs a dated estimate and a clearly stated method and geographic scope.
