Use Apps Script to Put YouTube Video Views in Sheets

Export a channel’s accessible uploads to Google Sheets by paging through its uploads playlist, fetching video statistics, and joining rows by video ID.

To export a channel’s videos with views and subscriber count, use the YouTube Data API through Google Apps Script: retrieve the channel’s uploads playlist, list every playlist page, fetch statistics for those video IDs, and write the joined results to Google Sheets. This produces an inventory of videos available to the API—not a guaranteed list of private or otherwise inaccessible uploads.

What the spreadsheet can include

A practical export can have one row per available uploaded video, with its title, video ID, and view count, plus the channel’s subscriber count in a separate summary cell or column. The subscriber figure belongs to the channel, not to individual videos.

For other channels, the export is limited to public data. An authenticated owner may be able to access private information for their own channel, subject to authorization and API permissions. The channel’s videoCount represents public videos, even when requested by the owner; it is not a count of every private upload. See Google’s channel resource reference and API overview.

Why use the uploads playlist instead of search

Each channel resource includes an uploads playlist ID in contentDetails.relatedPlaylists.uploads. Listing that playlist and following its continuation tokens is the documented way to enumerate uploads. A search can help discover videos, but it is not the same as walking the channel’s uploads inventory; search results are not themselves persistent video resources. Google describes the uploads-playlist workflow in its video implementation guide.

Build the export in Google Sheets

  1. Create the Sheet and open Apps Script. In Google Sheets, choose Extensions > Apps Script. Google’s Apps Script quickstart demonstrates connecting YouTube data to a spreadsheet.
  2. Enable the YouTube Data API advanced service. In the Apps Script editor, enable the YouTube Data API advanced service, then complete any required Google Cloud project setup shown by the editor.
  3. Authorize the script. Run it under the Google account whose permissions should apply, and approve the requested access. For public-channel exports, request public data; access to private channel information requires appropriate owner authorization and API permissions.
  4. Look up the channel and uploads playlist. Call channels.list for the target channel and request the fields needed for the export, including its uploads playlist ID and subscriber information. Read hiddenSubscriberCount as well as statistics.subscriberCount so the sheet can distinguish a hidden count from a numeric value.
  5. Enumerate the playlist completely. Call playlistItems.list for the uploads playlist. After each response, check for a continuation token and request the next page until no token remains. Collect each video ID and its playlist-item details, such as the video title.
  6. Fetch statistics and join by video ID. Request the video resources with the statistics part, batching IDs within the method’s limits. Match each response to its playlist row by video ID—not by row order—and add the view count to the spreadsheet.
  7. Write the results and date the snapshot. Create a header row such as Video ID, Title, and Views, then write the channel subscriber count and export date in clearly labeled cells. The Apps Script quickstart’s sample writes channel ID, title, and view count; the per-video inventory and subscriber field require extending that example.

Google documents pagination metadata for videos.list; its current reference lists a quota cost of one unit per call. The API also applies method limits and quota constraints, so an export with many videos may need several requests and should handle API errors rather than assuming one call is enough.

Read the counts with their limits in mind

Subscriber count is rounded

YouTube rounds the public subscriberCount down to three significant figures. It is therefore an approximate displayed count, not an exact subscriber total. If hiddenSubscriberCount is true, the count is not publicly visible; record that status instead of treating a missing number as zero. These fields are defined in the channel resource reference.

Views need an export date

Starting August 24, 2026, YouTube’s documented viewCount definition for all formats counts a view when a video begins to play, including autoplay, pointer hover, and click or tap to play. Because the counting definition can change over time, record the export date and avoid comparing totals across dates as though their definitions were necessarily identical. See the channel reference.

What this method does—and does not—cover

  • It is repeatable: you can rerun the script to refresh the sheet, provided it repeats the playlist pagination and video-statistics lookup.
  • It is not a private-video bypass: the rows represent uploads accessible to the requesting account under YouTube’s API rules.
  • It is not the same as an Analytics report: this workflow inventories video resources and their available statistics. Owner-facing reporting uses a different API context; see Google’s YouTube Analytics API reporting documentation.
  • It is more complete than manual copying for a large channel: following every playlist page avoids relying on only the videos currently visible in a page or on a single search result set.
