How Big Was Vasuki indicus Compared With Today’s Largest Snakes?

Vasuki indicus was probably about 11–15 metres long, according to the 2024 scientific description. That would put it roughly 1–5 metres longer than the 10.05-metre maximum total body length used for the reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus), the living-snake benchmark in the study.

Those figures are estimates, not measurements of a complete animal. Scientists reconstructed Vasuki’s size from a partial fossil vertebral column containing 27 vertebrae found in 47-million-year-old rocks in Kutch, western India. The uncertainty in that reconstruction matters as much as the headline number.

The size comparison at a glance

The arithmetic is straightforward: subtracting the study’s 10.05-metre reticulated-python benchmark from the ends of the Vasuki estimate gives about 0.95 metre at the low end and 4.95 metres at the high end. Rounded for readers, the fossil snake’s modeled range is therefore approximately 1–5 metres longer.

Snake Length figure What the figure represents How certain is the comparison?
Vasuki indicus Approximately 11–15 m Total-body-length reconstruction from a partial fossil vertebral column; Nature India reported the model’s more precise range as 10.9–15.2 m. Substantial uncertainty because the complete skeleton and soft tissues are unknown.
Reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) 10.05 m maximum total body length in the study’s method The living-snake comparison benchmark selected by Datta and Bajpai. A benchmark for the species, not a claim that every living reticulated python reaches 10.05 m.
Titanoboa Exact length not stated in the cited comparison The study describes its estimated length as comparable with Vasuki’s. Titanoboa’s vertebrae are described as slightly larger, so length and vertebral size should not be treated as interchangeable.

The primary paper rounds the estimate to 11–15 metres in its abstract. The 10.9–15.2-metre endpoints are a more precise report of the model in Nature India’s 22 April 2024 summary, not a separate direct measurement.

What scientists actually found

Datta and Bajpai described Vasuki indicus in Scientific Reports on 18 April 2024. The fossils come from an early Middle Eocene, approximately 47-million-year-old, lignite-bearing succession in Kutch, in western India. The material is a partial vertebral column with 27 vertebrae.

That evidence establishes the animal’s identity and gives a way to estimate its scale, but it does not preserve a complete body. Missing vertebrae, the unpreserved head and tail, and unknown soft-tissue proportions all affect a total-length reconstruction. The scientifically responsible wording is therefore “estimated body length” or “the study’s model suggests,” rather than “the snake measured 15 metres.”

Why the vertebrae matter

Vertebrae are the part of a snake’s skeleton most directly connected to its body length. Their dimensions provide a scale for comparing an incomplete fossil with better-known snakes. In the Nature India account, the largest Vasuki vertebra was about 11 centimetres wide. That width is a measurement of a fossil bone, not the width of the living snake’s body and not a second way of stating its total length.

How it compares with the largest living snake

The paper treats the reticulated python as the longest-known extant snake and uses a maximum total body length of 10.05 metres in its comparison method. Against that benchmark, even the bottom of the Vasuki range is slightly longer: 11 metres is about 0.95 metre beyond 10.05 metres. At the top of the range, 15 metres is about 4.95 metres beyond it.

The 10.05-metre figure must be read as the study’s comparison value. It is not a statement that reticulated pythons commonly reach that length, nor does it turn a species-level maximum into a typical size. The comparison asks how the modeled total length of an extinct animal relates to a very large documented living-snake benchmark.

Measurement versus reconstruction

A living reticulated python can be measured along its body, while Vasuki’s total length has to be inferred from fossil elements. That difference makes the two numbers useful but not perfectly equivalent. The modern value is an observed animal-length benchmark; the fossil value is a range generated from anatomical comparison.

This is why “longer than today’s largest snakes” is a fair shorthand only when the qualification remains visible. A more exact sentence is: “The study’s estimated range for Vasuki extends roughly 1–5 metres beyond the 10.05-metre reticulated-python benchmark.”

Was Vasuki longer than Titanoboa?

The 2024 paper compares Vasuki with Titanoboa and calls their estimated lengths comparable. That supports placing the two among the largest snakes known from the fossil record, but it does not prove that Vasuki decisively surpassed Titanoboa.

The paper also notes that Titanoboa vertebrae are slightly larger. Vertebral dimensions and reconstructed total length are related, yet they are not the same measurement. A slightly larger vertebra does not automatically establish a longer complete body, especially when both animals are represented by incomplete fossil evidence and modeled estimates.

Accordingly, claims that Vasuki “definitely dethroned” Titanoboa go beyond what the cited evidence supports. “Comparable in estimated length” is the accurate formulation.

Why the estimate has a range instead of one exact number

The range of approximately 11–15 metres is not a sign that the study failed to measure carefully. It reflects the limits of reconstructing an entire snake from a partial column. Different assumptions about how the preserved vertebrae relate to the missing portions of the spine can produce different total lengths.

  • Only part of the column survives: the reported 27 vertebrae are not a complete skeleton.
  • The endpoints are modeled: 10.9 and 15.2 metres are model outputs reported by Nature India, while the paper’s abstract rounds them to approximately 11–15 metres.
  • Soft tissues are absent: fossils preserve bones, not the exact living outline used in a tape-measure length.
  • Comparative choice matters: the study uses the reticulated python as its living reference, so the resulting estimate depends on that anatomical comparison.

For readers, the practical conclusion is that the best-supported answer is an interval, not a single “true” length. Reporting 15 metres as a confirmed measurement would erase the uncertainty that the authors built into the result.

What “11–15 metres” looks like in scale

At 11 metres, the lower estimate already exceeds the study’s 10.05-metre living benchmark by nearly a metre. At 15 metres, the upper estimate is close to five metres beyond it. That spread is large enough to change the ranking in a comparison, which is why the paper presents a range rather than a narrow point estimate.

The figures describe total body length, not height, girth or mass. The cited description does not provide a defensible body-mass estimate for Vasuki, so length is the appropriate basis for this comparison. The approximately 11-centimetre maximum vertebral width reported by Nature India should likewise remain a bone measurement rather than being converted into an unsupported body-weight claim.

What kind of snake was Vasuki?

Datta and Bajpai identify Vasuki indicus as a madtsoiid snake and describe it as the largest known madtsoiid in the abstract of their paper. The taxonomic result is separate from the broader question of whether it was the longest snake ever: the latter would require comparable evidence from every candidate giant snake, including extinct forms represented by different kinds and amounts of fossil material.

The fossils’ age and location are also part of the identification. They come from the early Middle Eocene, roughly 47 million years ago, in Kutch, western India. Those details explain why the discovery expands the record of giant snakes in the Eocene, but they do not make the reconstructed length more precise than the evidence allows.

How to read headlines about the discovery

News coverage can compress several different statements into one dramatic claim. A headline saying that Vasuki was “15 metres long” is usually referring to the upper end of the modeled range, not to a complete fossil measured end to end. A statement that it was “the biggest snake” may also omit the comparison with Titanoboa, whose estimated length the paper calls comparable and whose vertebrae it says are slightly larger.

When checking a claim, separate three questions:

  1. What is measured directly? The fossil material includes 27 vertebrae, with the largest reported at about 11 centimetres wide in the Nature India summary.
  2. What is reconstructed? The total length is modeled as approximately 11–15 metres, or 10.9–15.2 metres in the more precise secondary report.
  3. What is being compared? The study uses 10.05 metres for the reticulated python and describes Titanoboa as comparable in estimated length.

Keeping those categories separate prevents a bone measurement from being mistaken for body length or an estimate from being presented as a complete-animal observation.

What the evidence allows us to conclude

  • Vasuki indicus was a giant snake whose estimated total length was approximately 11–15 metres.
  • Using the study’s 10.05-metre reticulated-python benchmark, its estimated range was roughly 1–5 metres longer.
  • The estimate comes from a partial fossil vertebral column of 27 vertebrae, so it is not a direct measurement of a complete skeleton.
  • The fossils are about 47 million years old and were found in Kutch, western India.
  • The study places Vasuki’s estimated length in the same broad class as Titanoboa but does not establish an unqualified victory over it.

The strongest answer to the title, therefore, is both impressive and careful: Vasuki may have reached about 11–15 metres, making it approximately 1–5 metres longer than the living reticulated-python maximum used in the study, but that conclusion remains a reconstruction from incomplete fossils rather than a tape-measured body.

Sources for the figures

The primary source is Datta and Bajpai, “Largest known madtsoiid snake from warm Eocene period of India suggests intercontinental Gondwana dispersal,” Scientific Reports 14, 8054 (published 18 April 2024). Nature India’s Sahana Ghosh summarized the discovery on 22 April 2024 and reported the 10.9–15.2-metre modeled range and approximately 11-centimetre maximum vertebral width. Those publications support the numerical and comparative qualifications used here.
