How Battery Storage Helps Data Centers Manage Peak Power Demand

Data-center batteries can shift electricity use away from high-demand periods, but peak shaving, UPS backup and grid services place different demands on power, duration and operating reserves.

Battery storage helps a data center manage peak power by charging when electricity is available or less costly, then discharging during high-demand periods to reduce how much power the facility draws from the grid. It shifts electricity use across time rather than generating energy or automatically reducing total consumption. A battery may also support an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), but peak shaving and outage backup need different operating reserves, power levels and discharge durations.

How a battery reduces peak grid demand

The operating cycle is charge, hold, discharge, recharge. A data center can charge its battery during lower-demand or lower-price periods, then discharge it when the facility’s load or the wider grid’s demand rises. The battery supplies some of the facility’s power during that window, reducing its grid draw. The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes this time-shifting as energy arbitrage; the U.S. Department of Energy identifies storage as one resource that can help manage rising data-center demand and lower peak demand. This is peak shaving, not energy generation. The facility must eventually recharge the battery, and charging and discharging involve losses. Whether the arrangement lowers costs or eases grid stress depends on when charging is possible, when the peak occurs, applicable tariffs or market rules, and how much stored energy remains available.

Peak shaving, UPS backup and grid services are different jobs

Data-center batteries can be configured for multiple purposes, but the purpose determines how the system is sized and operated. EPRI’s June 2025 report, Grid Flexibility Needs and Data Center Characteristics, describes the roles of UPS systems, generators and customer-sited storage.

Use What the battery does Key operating consideration
UPS bridge and continuity Provides immediate backup to critical loads through a disruption and helps bridge the transition to backup generation. A default UPS configuration is designed to supply the minimum uninterruptible load until generators can start; extra battery capacity can extend that time.
Peak management Discharges during selected high-demand windows to reduce grid draw. Output power must meet the desired reduction, while stored energy must last for the full dispatch window.
Grid or market services May provide capacity or ancillary services where utility and market rules permit. Eligibility, dispatch requirements and potential revenue depend on local rules.

EPRI describes UPS systems as providing “instantaneous backup power” and helping smooth transitions to backup generation. Standby generators serve longer outages and typically take seconds to minutes to activate. Customer-sited storage can be integrated into a UPS or installed as a standalone asset. What determines how much peak load a battery can cover?

Power output and energy capacity

Two different capabilities matter: power, usually expressed in kilowatts or megawatts, and energy, expressed in kilowatt-hours or megawatt-hours. Power determines how much load the battery can serve at once; energy determines how long it can sustain that output. A system may have enough power to shave a large spike but not enough stored energy to continue through a long peak.

Peak duration and state of charge

The battery’s available energy at the start of a peak constrains its contribution. If it enters the event partially discharged, it can serve less load or do so for less time. EIA’s AEO2022 analysis used a four-hour maximum discharge duration for modeled battery systems. That is an assumption in that analysis, not a universal battery specification or design recommendation. EIA also explains that a net peak lasting longer than a battery’s discharge window can reduce the battery’s capacity contribution. EIA battery-storage analysis

Reliability reserve and control priorities

If the same battery supports UPS functions and peak shaving, its controls must preserve enough charge for reliability needs while following any economic dispatch plan. Energy held in reserve for outages may not be available for routine peak reduction. The system therefore needs coordinated rules for state of charge, reserve levels, dispatch instructions and equipment limits. EPRI notes that data-center flexibility is constrained by service-level agreements, customer expectations, lost revenue and implementation costs. EPRI, June 2025

Where storage fits in a data-center power strategy

Storage is one part of a broader response to rising electricity demand, not a universal substitute for firm power or grid upgrades. DOE’s approach includes generation, storage, grid infrastructure, efficiency, demand resources and planning. Site-level measures may also include flexible workloads or temporary cooling adjustments, though latency requirements, service commitments and opportunity costs can limit those options. DOE data-center demand report; EPRI, June 2025

The scale of the electricity challenge provides context for why peak management matters. DOE’s summary of a 2024 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report says U.S. data centers used about 4.4% of total U.S. electricity in 2023 and projects a range of approximately 6.7% to 12% by 2028. Separately, DOE reported EPRI’s estimate that data centers could account for up to 9% of U.S. electricity generation annually by 2030, compared with 4% of total load in 2023. These are distinct estimates with different framing and time horizons, not directly interchangeable forecasts. DOE summary of LBNL’s 2024 report; DOE report citing EPRI’s estimate

How to assess a project

A meaningful comparison starts with the facility’s power needs and local operating conditions, rather than a generic payback estimate. Tariffs, market rules, peak timing and duration, charging opportunities, capital and integration costs, and service requirements differ by site. EIA notes that U.S. regional capacity and energy-market structures vary, so a revenue or savings case cannot be assumed to apply everywhere. EIA battery-storage analysis

  • Define the purpose: peak shaving, UPS backup, grid services, or a controlled combination.
  • Size both power and duration: determine the load reduction required and how long it must be sustained.
  • Set reliability reserves: establish what charge must remain available for critical-load continuity and outage response.
  • Confirm configuration: assess whether storage is UPS-integrated, standalone, or otherwise behind the meter, and how it will connect to facility controls.
  • Check local economics and rules: model tariffs, charging windows, market eligibility, dispatch obligations, and integration costs for the specific location.
  • Account for operational trade-offs: consider workload and cooling flexibility only where service requirements allow it.

The case for a project depends on whether its operational and financial benefits remain worthwhile after reliability reserves, conversion losses, integration needs and local constraints are accounted for. EIA emphasizes that investment assessment can depend on combining revenue streams across applications; EPRI highlights the practical limits on data-center flexibility.
