What to Look for in a Privileged Access Management Alternative to BoKS

A practical guide to evaluating PAM alternatives to BoKS: map current workflows, compare documented capabilities and test migration assumptions in a proof of concept.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a BoKS alternative by matching it to the systems, identities, access paths and audit workflows your installation actually uses—not by assuming that a product described as PAM replaces every BoKS function. SSH PrivX, BeyondTrust Privileged Remote Access (PRA) and Delinea document capabilities worth evaluating, but their published materials do not establish feature parity or a supported migration path from your BoKS deployment. Build a use-case inventory, compare each candidate against it, then test the critical workflows in a proof of concept.

Start by mapping your BoKS deployment

“BoKS” alone is not enough information to choose a replacement. The right comparison depends on the BoKS version and modules in use, the assets it governs, and the policies and operational processes your organization relies on. Record the current state before discussing product fit with vendors.

  • Identities: List workforce administrators, service or machine identities, vendors and contractors, and any other privileged users in scope.
  • Targets: Identify servers, network devices, cloud resources, appliances and operational technology systems that are governed.
  • Access paths: Note which users reach which targets through SSH, RDP, other network-device protocols, native clients, browsers or APIs. Include emergency and vendor access.
  • Credential handling: Document whether BoKS stores, rotates or injects passwords or keys; whether users can see secrets; and whether any workflows depend on SSH keys or another authentication method.
  • Authorization and identity: Capture roles, approvals, MFA requirements, delegated administration, identity-provider or directory integrations, and what happens when a person’s identity or role changes.
  • Evidence and operations: Record required session logs or recordings, retention and export needs, integrations, availability expectations, and the teams responsible for day-to-day administration.

Turn each real task into a comparison row: for example, “contractor connects to a Linux server over SSH, receives only the approved access, and leaves a reviewable session record.” That keeps a shortlist grounded in your workflows rather than broad product labels.

Compare candidates against the same requirements

For every use case, ask each vendor to show how it works in the proposed edition and deployment. Mark each requirement as documented, demonstrated in a proof of concept, contractually included, or still unverified. A feature mentioned in product documentation is not the same as a successful test in your environment.

Evaluation area What to establish
Scope Which workforce administrators, service identities, vendors, network devices, cloud resources and OT systems are covered? Are any targets or identity types outside the proposed scope?
Identity and authorization Which directories and identity providers integrate? Can you express role-based and contextual access, approvals, MFA, delegated administration and identity lifecycle changes as required?
Credential model Does the design use password vaulting and rotation, credential injection, SSH keys, short-lived certificates, or a mix? Do users ever see the underlying secret?
Access coverage Which protocols, target types, browser or native-client workflows, and APIs are supported? What target-side services, agents, trust configuration or other setup is required?
Session controls and evidence Can administrators record, observe and log sessions, search or export audit evidence, set retention, and respond to a session—for example, by terminating it?
Deployment and operations Is the proposed option SaaS, cloud-hosted, self-hosted or a virtual appliance? Check network reachability, high availability, supported operating systems, upgrade process and integration dependencies.
Migration and economics Ask what can be inventoried or imported: policies, secrets, history and recordings. Establish coexistence options, implementation effort, licensing and support before comparing total cost.

The available product descriptions do not provide comparable pricing, independently measured cost or performance rankings, or a verified BoKS migration-success figure. Request written answers for licensing and migration scope rather than treating an advertised capability as an included service.

What the documented candidates may be worth testing

The following are possible fits for particular needs, not a ranking or evidence that any candidate replaces every BoKS function. The capabilities below are vendor-documented; verify the exact edition, modules and deployment you intend to buy.

Candidate Documented capabilities to evaluate Questions for your proof of concept
SSH PrivX SSH Communications Security describes PrivX as providing audited remote access to cloud infrastructure, servers, network devices, appliances and OT. Its v44 documentation describes short-lived certificate authentication, role-based permissions, and a secrets vault with password rotation for targets that cannot use certificates. Can the target systems be configured to trust the PrivX certificate authority? Does the vault and rotation approach cover targets that cannot use certificates? Verify identity integrations, high availability, Windows/RDP requirements and migration from your installed BoKS environment.
BeyondTrust Privileged Remote Access (PRA) BeyondTrust documentation describes remote access controls, a vault for privileged passwords and keys, credential injection so users need not see or type secrets, and session logging with live viewing and termination. It lists support for Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile platforms, SSH and Telnet devices. Deployment choices include BeyondTrust-hosted cloud and a customer-hosted virtual appliance. Does the proposed PRA scope cover every BoKS workflow, target protocol and integration you need? Confirm resilience, data residency, migration artifacts and pricing. Treat any capacity statement as deployment- and infrastructure-dependent, not a universal guarantee.
Delinea Delinea’s Privileged Remote Access documentation describes browser-based SSH and RDP without a VPN, integration with Secret Server in cloud or a private network, SMB/SFTP file transfers, and configurable near-real-time observation and session recording. Its platform documentation describes least-privilege and just-in-time controls for Windows, Linux and Unix servers, plus MFA at server login and privilege elevation. Confirm target services are enabled and that protocol and target coverage fit your estate. Establish the deployment architecture and the specific product modules and licenses required for remote access, vaulting and server controls; also test policy and audit migration.

Release and packaging details to check

SSH’s software page presents PrivX 45.0 downloads for RHEL/Rocky Linux 8 and 9 and Amazon Linux 2023, and was updated September 30, 2026. Its v44 software material says the PrivX Agent is deprecated beginning with v44 while privx-cmd remains separately available. Confirm the components and supported deployment for the exact release you select rather than assuming an older client or installation pattern still applies.

For Delinea, distinguish the remote-access capability from the server privilege controls when requesting a quote: the documentation describes both, but the module and license combination for your intended scope must be confirmed. BeyondTrust PRA’s cloud and virtual-appliance choices also call for a deployment-specific review rather than a capacity assumption based on a headline figure.

Run a proof of concept against real workflows

Use representative systems and have administrators, security reviewers and—where relevant—third-party users perform the tasks they would in production. A focused proof of concept should test:

  1. Representative targets: Include the Linux/Unix and Windows systems, network devices, appliances or OT targets that matter to your deployment.
  2. Routine and exceptional access: Run a normal administrator session, an emergency-access flow and a vendor or contractor session. Check least privilege and approval steps.
  3. Identity and authentication: Test MFA, identity-provider changes and role updates. For certificate-based SSH, include target-side trust configuration; for password-based targets, test the applicable vaulting, rotation or injection workflow.
  4. Session evidence and response: Observe or record sessions as required, then verify that administrators can find, retain and export the evidence. Test any needed live response, such as terminating a session.
  5. Availability and failure behavior: Exercise the design’s high-availability or recovery expectations and confirm what users and operators experience during a failure.
  6. Migration and coexistence: Test what can actually be moved from BoKS, including policies, secrets, history and recordings, and identify what would need to be recreated or retained separately.

Ask vendors to demonstrate the requirements on the same representative targets and workflows, and record gaps or dependencies as well as successful tests. A proof of concept can show operational fit; migration support, product scope and licensing should still be confirmed in writing.

Make the decision on evidence, not the label

Before selecting a replacement, give each vendor the exact BoKS version and modules, an inventory of governed identities and targets, and the access and audit workflows that must continue. Ask for a requirement-by-requirement response, the proposed product and license combination, and a migration plan that identifies what moves, what does not, and how coexistence will work. None of the vendor descriptions summarized here establishes a drop-in replacement or a supported BoKS migration route; shortlist inclusion is a starting point for evaluation, not proof of parity.
