Lunar Pits vs. Craters: How to Tell Them Apart

A lunar crater is made by an impact; a lunar pit is a steep-walled opening whose shape may indicate a collapse or another process. They are not always mutually exclusive categories: pits occur in different geological settings, and an image alone may not reveal how one formed or whether it opens into a cave. To tell them apart, weigh the shape, surrounding terrain, and available subsurface evidence together.

What is the difference between a lunar pit and a crater?

An impact crater begins when an asteroid, meteoroid, or comet strikes the Moon. The collision excavates material, which may spread around the crater as ejecta; later impacts and other changes can modify the feature. Larger craters can become wider and shallower, so not every impact crater looks like a simple bowl. NASA’s overview of impact craters describes the formation and modification process.

“Pit” describes a surface form: a steep-walled depression or opening. One proposed origin is the collapse of a roof over a subsurface void, but the label does not by itself establish that a pit is volcanic, that it is a skylight, or that it connects to a cave. NASA has cautioned that images alone offer little evidence for the cause of any particular pit. NASA’s report on lunar pits discusses both the morphology and the uncertainty.

Which visible clues help distinguish them?

Look for several clues rather than relying on a single silhouette. Illumination, viewing angle, and later modification can make walls and floors difficult to interpret.

Clue Impact crater Lunar pit
Likely formation Excavation by an impact is the defining process. Possible roof collapse over a void, among other explanations; shape alone does not establish the cause.
Surface form Often a rim and bowl-like or modified interior; ejecta may surround it. Often a steep-walled opening; some show overhangs or a floor that is difficult to see.
Setting Impact features occur across the lunar surface. Pits have been observed in lunar maria and in impact-melt settings, so location alone is not decisive.
What an image establishes Shape and ejecta can support an impact interpretation, though features may have changed over time. A dark opening or overhang suggests a pit, but does not prove a subsurface passage or cave.

These are tendencies, not a guaranteed visual test. In particular, pits and impact geology can overlap: planetary scientist David Kring has described pit-like collapsed features in impact-cratering provinces where impact melt flowed. A pit in such a setting should not automatically be identified as a lava-tube skylight. Kring’s NASA Gravity Assist discussion describes skylights as openings in roofs of former lava channels and pits as related collapsed features.

Do lunar pits lead to caves?

Some may, but a pit’s appearance is not proof of a cave connection. Stronger evidence requires observations that support a subsurface extension. In 2024, NASA reported radar evidence of a cave extending more than 200 feet from the base of the Mare Tranquillitatis pit. The report said the cave’s full extent was unknown; this finding concerns that site, not lunar pits generally. NASA’s 2024 report on the Mare Tranquillitatis pit explains the radar evidence.

NASA’s 2022 analysis of the same pit also reported that shaded reaches stayed around 63°F (about 17°C) in the study’s observations and modeling. That is a finding for this particular location, not a general temperature for lunar pits or caves. NASA’s 2022 report gives the site-specific thermal context.

How many pits have been identified?

In a 2014 report, NASA said more than 200 pits had been reported, ranging from about 5 meters across to more than 900 meters in diameter. The search then covered only about 40% of the Moon under suitable lighting, so those figures describe that historical inventory, not a complete census or a current 2026 count. NASA’s pit overview provides the date and survey qualification.
