Azure VM lifecycle, AWS EC2 instance retirement, and Google Compute Engine deprecation are different kinds of change—not three versions of the same retirement policy. Azure lifecycle stages apply to VM size series; AWS retirement notices concern individual instances whose host hardware has an irreparable failure; and Google documents feature deprecations separately from VM states and host maintenance. That distinction determines what might stop, what you must migrate, and how much notice a policy date gives you.

What each provider means by lifecycle or retirement

The first task when an alert arrives is to identify what the provider is changing. A notice about a VM size, a particular VM instance, a cloud feature, and a physical host event can all lead to service disruption, but they do not describe the same event. Treating them as equivalent can lead to the wrong migration plan—or to an assumption that a workload will keep running when it will not.

Provider and mechanism What the notice concerns What triggers the change
Azure VM size-series lifecycle A VM size series and the ability to use its sizes The series progresses through published lifecycle stages and may reach an announced retirement date. Capacity-growth restrictions can also be announced separately.
AWS EC2 instance retirement An individual EC2 instance AWS detects an irreparable failure in the underlying host hardware and schedules that instance for retirement.
Google Compute Engine feature deprecation A feature specifically listed in Google’s deprecation documentation The feature reaches the end of its documented availability period; shutdown is then scheduled under the feature’s policy.
Google Compute Engine host maintenance A VM affected by a host event, rather than a feature deprecation A host event occurs. The VM’s response depends on its machine type and configuration.

Google’s documentation also describes instance states and transitions. Those states explain where an instance is in its operating lifecycle; they should not be confused with the separate policy for deprecating a listed feature or with the behavior configured for a host event.

Azure VM lifecycle stages and what they mean

Microsoft describes four Azure VM size-series lifecycle stages: Current, Extended, End of Life, and Retired. The stages describe the status of a size series, not a fault affecting one particular VM. A series can remain usable while it is in End of Life; the material change comes at retirement.

Stage Operational meaning
Current The size series is in the current lifecycle stage.
Extended The series is in Microsoft’s extended lifecycle stage. Confirm the exact support and availability terms for the affected series in Microsoft’s current lifecycle documentation.
End of Life Retirement has been announced and is pending. The sizes remain available until the retirement point, subject to separate capacity restrictions.
Retired The size is no longer available to create, resize into, or run. Microsoft says remaining VMs are deallocated, stop working and stop incurring charges, and no longer have an SLA or support.

End of Life is therefore a planning window, not a guarantee that capacity will remain available for every operation throughout that window. Microsoft separately warns that capacity-growth restrictions can affect deployment or expansion before a size series retires. Check both the lifecycle status and any capacity notice: the retirement date answers when the series is retired, while a capacity restriction can constrain what you can do sooner.

Current example: Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3, and Esv3

Microsoft’s lifecycle FAQ, checked October 11, 2026, lists November 15, 2029 as the retirement date for Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3, and Esv3. It says all 32 sizes in those series are affected. The FAQ also says the retirement does not apply to Azure Government, Azure operated by 21Vianet, or sovereign cloud regions. These are specific dates and scope, not a universal Azure VM retirement schedule; verify the applicable notice and cloud environment for the subscription you operate.

The same FAQ notes that capacity-growth restrictions began in July 2026. That date is a separate operational constraint, not the retirement date. A team that waits until 2029 to investigate could therefore encounter limitations on growing or deploying affected capacity well before the series is retired.

What happens to a VM when its Azure size is retired?

According to Microsoft, a VM still using a retired size is deallocated. It stops working and stops incurring charges, and the VM no longer has an SLA or support. Deallocation is not a successful migration: it does not move the workload to a replacement size or preserve service availability. The operator needs to select and validate a supported destination before the retirement date.

Separate the decision into two questions. First, what supported size series can run the workload? Second, what change process is needed to move the VM or workload there? A replacement needs to satisfy the workload’s requirements, not merely be the next available size. Check the features the application depends on, performance and capacity needs, and any series-specific preparation Microsoft documents. The lifecycle guidance calls out that some migrations require preparation tailored to the series.

For a VM that matters to service availability, plan a migration window and a way to verify the application after the change. The exact steps depend on the affected series and workload; the lifecycle information alone does not establish one universal Azure migration procedure. Do not assume that a resize, redeployment, or other method is supported for every source and destination combination—check the relevant series guidance before scheduling the change.

AWS EC2 instance retirement is a host-failure event

The AWS EC2 retirement guide cited here concerns an individual instance that AWS schedules for retirement after detecting an irreparable failure in its underlying hardware. It is not a lifecycle sequence for every EC2 instance type, and the cited page does not establish a portfolio-wide calendar of EC2 retirement dates. AWS sends an email with the affected instance ID and retirement date, so the operational unit is the specific instance named in the event.

The key recovery distinction is the instance’s root storage:

Root storage What AWS does at retirement What that means for recovery
EBS-root The instance is stopped. It can be restarted, at which point it moves to new hardware.
Instance-store-root The instance is terminated. It cannot be reused. Recovery must account for that outcome rather than depend on restarting the same instance.

These outcomes make it important to inspect the instance identified in the notice and establish its root-storage type before choosing a recovery action. A restart plan that is appropriate for an EBS-root instance is not an answer for an instance-store-root instance that will be terminated. Prepare data and workload recovery in a way that matches the actual storage and application design; the cited retirement guidance does not promise that an instance-store-root workload can be brought back by restarting the retired instance.

Because AWS’s event is triggered by a hardware failure, do not interpret the retirement date as a scheduled end-of-life date for an entire size family. Conversely, do not assume that a familiar instance type makes an affected individual instance safe to ignore. Work from the instance ID and date in the AWS notification, then determine which recovery path applies.

Google Cloud has separate feature, state, and host-event concepts

Google Cloud’s feature-deprecation policy applies only to features listed in its deprecation documentation. A listed feature remains available for the period defined for that feature; after that period, shutdown is scheduled. This is not a general rule that all Compute Engine VMs are retired on the same timetable. Check whether the notice names a listed feature and read that feature’s dates and terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s documentation also covers Compute Engine instance states and host-maintenance behavior. An instance state is a description of the VM’s current operating condition, while host maintenance concerns what happens when the physical host has an event. Neither should automatically be read as a feature-deprecation notice. Classify the notice before deciding whether to replace a feature, respond to an instance-state change, or plan for maintenance behavior.

Dated examples from Google’s deprecation table

Google’s listed examples illustrate why dates must be tied to the specific feature:

Listed feature Deprecation date Shutdown date How to interpret it
NVIDIA P4 and T4 August 1, 2026 August 1, 2027 These dates apply to the listed features in Google’s table, not to all Compute Engine instances or all uses of those GPU models.
Customer-supplied encryption keys (CSEKs) June 15, 2026 June 16, 2027 This is a feature-specific deprecation schedule, not a general VM retirement date.

As of October 13, 2026, the listed deprecation dates above have passed, while the listed shutdown dates are still in the future. That does not establish whether an individual project or resource is affected, or whether Google has changed the schedule since the documentation was checked on October 11, 2026. Confirm the live feature table and the notice for the resource before acting.

Host maintenance: live migration is common, not universal

Google says most Compute Engine instances are set by default to live migrate during host events, excluding the instance types identified in the preceding section of its host-maintenance documentation. Some machine types or configurations instead stop or terminate. The word “most” matters: do not infer live migration for a specific VM without checking its machine type and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an affected instance, identify the host-event behavior Google documents for that exact type and configuration, then choose a supported maintenance response. If the VM is configured or required to stop or terminate rather than live migrate, operational readiness depends on what happens after that action and how the application is brought back. A feature deprecation requires a different response: replace or stop relying on the feature by its schedule. One notice may concern a feature; another may concern a host event, and the remediation is not interchangeable.

Side-by-side: scope, workload effect, and operator action

Question Azure size-series lifecycle AWS EC2 instance retirement Google Compute Engine
What is changing? A VM size series. A named instance affected by an irreparable host-hardware failure. It may be a listed feature, an instance-state transition, or host-maintenance behavior; identify which one the notice covers.
What triggers the action? A published lifecycle progression and retirement announcement; separate capacity restrictions may apply earlier. AWS detects irreparable failure of the instance’s underlying hardware. A listed feature reaches its documented schedule, an instance changes state, or a host event occurs, depending on the mechanism.
What happens to a running workload? At retirement, a remaining VM is deallocated and stops working; it also loses SLA and support. An EBS-root instance is stopped and can restart on new hardware; an instance-store-root instance is terminated and cannot be reused. A deprecated feature remains available for its defined period before shutdown is scheduled. During host events, most instances default to live migration, but some types or configurations stop or terminate.
What should the operator check first? The affected series, retirement date, capacity restrictions, destination compatibility, and any series-specific migration preparation. The instance ID and retirement date in the AWS email, plus whether the root is EBS or instance store. Whether the notice concerns a listed feature, instance state, or host maintenance; then check the feature schedule or exact machine-type and configuration behavior.
What is the main planning risk? Confusing the retirement date with an earlier capacity limit, or leaving a VM on a size that will be deallocated. Assuming all instances recover by restart, despite the different instance-store-root outcome. Assuming a feature schedule applies to all VMs, or assuming every instance live migrates during host maintenance.

How to respond to a notice without confusing the policies

Use the notice as the start of a resource-specific investigation. The checklist below works across providers because it starts by classifying the event rather than assuming every “retirement” means the same thing.

  1. Name the object. Record the exact Azure size series, AWS instance ID, or Google feature, instance, or host-maintenance behavior described by the notice. If it is a Google notice, distinguish the feature-deprecation policy from a state or host event.
  2. Record the dates and scope. Capture the announced date and any availability or shutdown period for the specific resource. Check the applicable region, cloud environment, and configuration. Azure’s stated exceptions for the Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3, and Esv3 retirement demonstrate why geography and cloud type matter.
  3. Establish the actual workload behavior. Determine whether the relevant outcome is deallocation, stop and restart, termination, scheduled feature shutdown, live migration, or another documented response. For AWS, inspect root storage. For Google host events, check the machine type and configuration. For Azure, distinguish the End of Life window from the Retired outcome.
  4. Choose a supported target or recovery path. For Azure, assess a supported Current or Extended series and validate the features and preparation required by the destination. For an AWS instance retirement, build the response around its root-storage outcome. For a Google deprecation, identify a replacement for the listed feature; for host maintenance, follow the behavior supported for the affected VM.
  5. Validate before the deadline or event. Test the application on the intended target or recovery path and schedule any required maintenance work. A provider’s general policy does not prove that a particular workload is compatible with a replacement.
  6. Recheck the live notice before execution. Retirement tables, feature schedules, regional exceptions, and configuration support can change. Confirm the current provider documentation and the actual resource notice before relying on a date or initiating a migration.

Common planning mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling every change a VM retirement. This hides whether the object is a family, individual VM, feature, or host. Use the provider’s exact object and mechanism when assigning owners and documenting remediation.
  • Planning only around a final date. Azure capacity-growth restrictions can precede retirement. Read capacity notices and lifecycle notices independently, and plan for the earlier constraint where it applies.
  • Treating End of Life as already retired. Azure’s End of Life stage means a retirement is pending; the size remains available until retirement, subject to separate restrictions. Conversely, waiting until the retirement date risks an abrupt service loss when the remaining VM is deallocated.
  • Assuming AWS retirement affects an entire instance family. The cited AWS policy concerns an individual instance after a host failure. Use the instance-specific notification instead of making a fleet-wide inference.
  • Assuming every stopped or terminated VM can be restarted. In the cited AWS case, instance-store-root instances are terminated and cannot be reused. In Google host events, some types or configurations stop or terminate instead of live migrating. Verify the documented outcome for the resource.
  • Reading Google feature dates as instance dates. A listed feature’s deprecation and shutdown dates are not universal Compute Engine VM retirement dates. Confirm that the feature actually appears in the applicable notice or deprecation table.
  • Assuming one region or cloud follows every other one. The Azure 2029 example has explicit cloud and regional exceptions. Validate the scope for the subscription and environment in question rather than applying a date globally.
  • Assuming a provider’s supported replacement will preserve the application automatically. The sources establish lifecycle and event behavior, not compatibility for every workload. Validate required capabilities and recovery procedures against the application’s own dependencies.

Which documentation to consult

For Azure, use Microsoft Learn’s Azure VM lifecycle overview for the four stages and its lifecycle FAQ for series-specific dates and exceptions. Consult the separate capacity information as well as the retirement table. For AWS, use the EC2 instance retirement guide to interpret the instance-specific notice and the EBS-root versus instance-store-root outcomes. For Google Cloud, consult the feature-deprecation table for listed feature dates, the instance-state documentation for state transitions, and the host-maintenance documentation for live-migration and stop-or-terminate behavior.

The policy details and dated examples here reflect official Microsoft, AWS, and Google Cloud documentation checked on October 11, 2026; the date context in the article is October 13, 2026. Provider schedules, supported configurations, and exceptions may change, so use the current official page and the affected resource’s own notice for operational decisions.
