How to Fix a Monitor Arm That Sags, Wobbles, or Won’t Stay in Place

A monitor arm that sinks, tilts, or shakes does not always need more tension. First identify which part is moving: the arm, the display head, the VESA connection, the desk clamp, or the desk itself. Then check the arm’s manual, monitor-weight compatibility, mounting connections, and desk support before making a small, model-approved adjustment. If the hardware is damaged or the arm cannot hold a compatible monitor within its approved adjustment range, stop adjusting and contact the manufacturer.

Identify what is moving before you adjust anything

“Monitor arm sags” can describe several different problems. The location of the movement determines what to inspect. Do not assume a screen that drops or shakes has a gas-spring tension problem.

What you see What to inspect first
The entire arm gradually sinks Compare the monitor’s weight with the arm’s documented load range, then consult the manual for that model’s height or spring-tension adjustment.
The arm stays put, but the screen tilts at the head Check the display-head or tilt adjustment instructions and the VESA connection. The arm’s height adjustment may not address movement at the head.
The display or arm shifts where it attaches to the desk Inspect the clamp or through-desk/grommet mounting connection and verify that the mounting method suits the desk.
The screen moves at the VESA plate Check the VESA connection and connectors against the arm’s manual. Fellowes’ troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out checking connectors, particularly the VESA plate, when investigating shaking.
The arm and clamp move with the desk edge Check whether the desk or mounting edge flexes. Increasing arm tension will not correct a moving support surface.
The screen shakes, but the source is unclear Observe the arm joints, base or clamp, VESA connection, and desk separately. Find the point that moves before tightening or adjusting anything.

This check is diagnostic, not a reason to tighten every connection. Follow the product manual for the correct inspection and tightening procedure; arm designs and hardware differ.

Check the manual and compatibility before changing tension

Find the exact model name or number on the arm or its paperwork, then use that model’s installation and adjustment instructions. Adjustment location, direction, required tool, and safe procedure are not universal. A screw that raises tension on one arm may not have the same function or direction on another.

With straightforward instructions, you can set up your monitor arm effortlessly, making it a hassle-free addition to your desk. We only recommend installing it on a wooden desk, preferably with no crossbeam blocking the underside.

The W100 manual illustrates why model-specific instructions matter: it says to keep the arm horizontal while adjusting the height screw to match the monitor’s weight. That is guidance for the W100, not a general instruction for other arms. Fellowes likewise recommends using the tool supplied with the arm for gas-spring tension adjustment. Do not substitute a guessed screw direction or tool size for the instructions for your model.

Before attempting an adjustment, verify these compatibility points:

We offer two desk mounting options: C-clamp mounting for desks 0.39″–2.56″ thick, or grommet base mounting for desks 0.39″–2.95″ thick.
  • Monitor weight: Check the display’s weight as mounted, and compare it with the arm’s supported minimum and maximum. Use the arm manufacturer’s stated load range rather than assuming that a screen that looks small is light enough.
  • VESA pattern: Confirm that the display’s mounting pattern matches the arm’s plate and that the connection is installed as the manual specifies.
  • Desk attachment: Check whether the arm uses a clamp or through-desk/grommet mount, and confirm that the desk’s thickness falls within the arm’s stated limits.
  • Desk support: Make sure the desk and the area where the mount attaches can support the arm and its parts. A desk that flexes at the mounting edge can make a correctly adjusted arm appear unstable.

For one concrete example, the W100 manual specifies a supported load of 2–9 kg and a desk-thickness range of 10–80 mm. Those figures apply only to the W100; they are not standard limits for monitor arms generally. Check the specifications for your own model.

Adjust an arm that sags or won’t stay at the desired height

Proceed only if the arm is undamaged, the display is within the arm’s documented load range, and the manual describes an adjustment for the movement you see. Keep a hand on the display throughout the adjustment so it remains supported.

Step 1: Affix the bracket to your table; Step 2: Attach your monitor to the VESA plate; Step 3: Adjust tension according to your monitor weight.
  • Two mounting options : You may choose to use either a C-clamp or grommet mount. For best results, make sure your table meets the following criteria: wood tabletop is recommended; the underside of the tabletop should ideally be free of any beams or panels that may interfere with the installation; the tabletop thickness and grommet mounting can support 0.59"-3.54”.
  1. Locate the correct instructions. Use the manual for the exact arm model. Identify the adjustment point, required tool, permitted range, and the position the arm or display must be in during adjustment.
  2. Make the display stable and supported. Follow the manual’s prescribed setup. For the W100 specifically, the manual says the arm should be horizontal during height-screw adjustment; do not transfer that position requirement to another model unless its instructions say so.
  3. Use the specified tool and adjustment method. Follow the manual’s stated direction and make a small change. Do not assume that clockwise or counterclockwise has a universal effect.
  4. Check the result while still supporting the screen. Move the display only as the manual permits and see whether the arm holds the intended position. If it still sinks, consult the instructions again before making another small adjustment.
  5. Stop at the approved limit. If the adjustment reaches its documented limit without solving the problem, do not force the mechanism or continue turning the adjustment screw.

Some arms use a tension adjustment; others may use a different mechanism or have different instructions. If you cannot identify the correct adjustment or the manual is unavailable, contact the manufacturer rather than experimenting.

Fix a monitor arm that wobbles

Work from the support surface toward the display: desk and mount, arm base and joints, then the VESA connection. Check each connection against the manual, and only tighten or reposition parts using the prescribed method. Fellowes’ troubleshooting guidance highlights connectors—especially the VESA plate—as checks for shaking.

  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
  • At the desk: Check whether the clamp or through-desk/grommet mount is installed in the correct way for that arm. Confirm the desk thickness and mounting arrangement against the model’s requirements.
  • At the arm: Inspect the base and joints for movement, looseness, or visible damage. Use the manual’s directions for any permitted tightening or correction.
  • At the display: Check whether the VESA plate or its connection moves. Confirm that the display and plate use a compatible VESA pattern and that the connection follows the product instructions.
  • At the desk surface: Watch the desk edge where the mount attaches. If that area flexes, the support surface—not the arm’s tension—is part of the problem.

If the source of the wobble is not obvious, do not tighten unrelated fasteners in an attempt to remove all movement. A mount, joint, or display connection that is damaged needs manufacturer guidance, not force.

Know when adjustment is not the answer

Do not continue adjusting if the arm or mounting hardware is damaged, if the display is outside the documented load range, or if you have reached the adjustment limit allowed by the manual. Also stop if the mount does not suit the desk or the desk itself flexes at the attachment point: tension cannot correct a compatibility or support problem.

This professional-grade precision puts you in full control from the first turn.

The W100 manual directs users to use the supplied parts and tools, ensure the desk can support the product and its parts, and not disassemble or arbitrarily exchange arm components. Apply the equivalent safety instructions for your own model. Do not overload an arm, substitute unapproved hardware, forcibly disassemble it, or keep adjusting damaged parts. Contact the manufacturer for help when a permitted adjustment fails or a component appears damaged.

When to replace the arm, and what to check

Replacement is a reasonable option when an arm is damaged, the manufacturer cannot resolve the fault, or the arm cannot hold a monitor that falls within its documented supported range after the approved adjustment. A replacement is not automatically necessary for every sag or wobble; a model-specific adjustment or a mounting correction may be enough.

Before choosing another arm, compare the actual specifications rather than relying on a general description such as “fits most monitors.” Check:

  • Supported monitor weight: The display must fall within both the stated minimum and maximum for the arm.
  • VESA pattern: Match the display’s mounting pattern to the arm’s plate.
  • Desk thickness and mount type: Confirm the desk works with the arm’s clamp or through-desk/grommet mounting method.
  • Adjustment instructions: Make sure the model explains how to set it up and adjust it safely.
  • Safety limits and parts: Review the manufacturer’s stated limits and whether replacement parts or support are available.

Check the desk’s capacity as well as the arm’s fit. A replacement arm that matches the display but is incompatible with the desk or mounting edge will not solve a support-surface problem.
